Accident on Drayton Manor's Splash Canyon claims girl

A theme park ride has been closed after a person reportedly fell from their seat into water.

Tamworth-based Drayton Manor theme park said there had been an incident on its Splash Canyon ride. Police said an 11-year-old girl had been airlifted to hospital after the incident.

West Midlands ambulance service said it was “called to reports of a patient in the water at Drayton Manor, Tamworth, at 2.18pm this afternoon”.

It said several paramedics and the Midlands air ambulance were sent to the scene.

Drayton Manor said: “The Splash Canyon ride has been closed following an incident this afternoon. Emergency services are at the scene and our fully trained park staff are assisting.”

Splash Canyon is a river rapids ride. Wikipedia indicates its an Intamin Model

Its now been confirmed that an 11 year old girl has died.

Awful news. This the sort of thing that stirs up countless thoughts of things to say - absolutely none of which matters to anyone among the girl's family, friends, or those who work at or visit the park. We can only share in what must be unimaginable grief.

Seems to be a few more details coming through. The Girl was on a school trip, and it is suggested she stood up when the ride was in operation, fell into the water and hit her head. She was airlifted to hospital but no joy there.

Terrible business this. Health and Safety are investigating, as you would expect.
