Disney Cancels 'Star Wars Weekends' at DHS

Orlando Sentinel - "Disney's Hollywood Studios will not be offering its annual Star Wars Weekends any more, Walt Disney World reported Monday.

The popular event held on consecutive weekends in May and June is going away because of construction of a Star Wars-themed land in the park. Once the new area opens, there will be 14 acres devoted to Star Wars every day, the company said.

"While Star Wars Weekends has been a great way to enjoy the saga for a few days every year, now the Force will be with Disney's Hollywood Studios every day," a company announcement said.

Cancelling a huge draw like the Star Wars weekendss while the expansion won't come into being for at least two years doesn't seem like good planning.

Disney still needs Star Wars events. Otherwise, these actors will go to the convention circuit and Disney will leave all that money on the table. They should have considered doing the meet and greets at EPCOT and turn the sphere into Death Star.
