'Survivor' theme park attraction on the way?

By Robert Niles: Okay, I've talked about this before, but now it appears as though it might be happening.

Cruising through the U.S. Trademark Office's online database after yesterday's report on Cedar Point's new "Maverick" application, I found that an application has been filed for an amusement park ride with the name "Survivor: Outwit, Outplay, Outlast". The application was filed on Jan. 24, and no other applications were filed that day by Survivor Productions, LLC. Which suggests that this wasn't some routine blanket registration of anything carrying the "Survivor" brand.

No word on where a ride based on this hit reality TV show would go, though. No theme park company was listed on the application, meaning that the trademark, if granted, would reside with the production company and be licensed to the theme park operator.

Obviously, the first thought would be a Paramount Park, given CBS's ownership of those parks. (At least, for now.) But with CBS dumping the parks, perhaps some other company might have made a play for Survivor

Wonder if it will be a contest like Fear Factor Live at USH. I hope not.

The ride will be going to Paramount's Great America. I believe it will be a Zamperla Disk-O Coaster. If you've been checking screamscape.com you would know about this.

This does sound suspiciously like a fear factor rip off. No hope (Thankfully) of it coming to USF then!

I've also heard about a survivor themed ride coming to Great America. In my honest opinion, this is a pretty lame thing to base a ride on. The CBS show is getting old fast, the Zamperla Disko won't be all that some think it's cracked up to be, and Paramount Parks will pull one of those stunts where they grab some random thrill ride and slap a movie or TV title on it that has nothing to do with the ride itself. Not that the rides are that bad themselves, but the weak attempt at "theming" they get almost insults our intelligence. Call it Paramount not wanting to pony up any dough to put some thought and substance into it. They've done some good things with Kings Island the past few years, but most of the other parks have pretty much been ignored because they don't get top attendance in their area of the country. They've got some nice movies and shows on the shelf that haven't even been tapped. Sky Captain, Lemony Snicket, Addams Family, just to name a few. They have the Nickelodeon/Nick at Nite franchise, MTV, Star Trek...etc etc etc. I guess it doesn't really matter though. I just hope that the next owners don't run the whole thing into the ground at this point.

There's "theme" and then there's "brand." I love to see theme parks finding creative ways to extend a movie, TV or book theme into an interactive attraction. But it annoys me to no end when a theme park simply slaps a brand onto an attraction, with no attempt to unify them under a common theme.
