Eagles to open Hard Rock Park, June 2

Don't get me wrong here - this is a solid pair of bookings - but was I the only person who somehow expected Zeppelin to show up for this? I'm not complaining in the slightest bit, mind you...

Zeppelin would have been the ultimate opener, but as a person who works in that particular industry, I can say for sure it's a huge improbability for that to happen. Here's why

1.Led Zeppelin have played together one time in the last 25 years, that was December of last year for a one time benefit in which tickets ended up for around a grand a piece. Many have tried to get them to come in that time, one has been successful...only because it was for the family of the founder of their old record label, Atlantic Records.

2.While there has been a lot of talk about a full blown reunion and a tour, lead singer Robert Plant is on his own tour this year, which makes a spot date improbable.

3.There is no venue in town that would hold them. You would need at least 30,000 seats to come close to breaking even, and that's at a few hundred bucks a ticket. Outdoor venues would be a security nightmare because of the massive amount of people wanting to get in, and you would risk the chance of bad weather, which means the band doesn't play.

4.Hard Rock Park would be spending a fortune to make this happen. The cost of getting Led Zeppelin to play one night at Myrtle Beach, SC would be astronomical. Paying the band, hiring out an absolute top of the line production company for one show, running security, parking, insurance costs, and other assorted expenses would probably equal the cost of several appearances by other bands such as the Eagles and the Moody Blues.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see it, and if it could be done, it would be the ultimate publicity stunt that would draw the ultimate in media coverage. It just isn't that economically or logistically feasible to bring them in at this time. The opening bill is a respectable bill, and hopefully it's the start of a concert series.

The one time I went to a Hard Rock Cafe, my impression was that most of the patrons there wouldn't know hard rock if it leapt out of the radio and kicked them in the head. With the selection of the Eagles, that seems to apply to management as well.
