2010 Best Theme Park Attraction nominee: Universal Studios Florida's Universal Horror Make-up Show

January 13, 2010, 12:47 PM · We continue our daily "off season" tributes to the best of the best in the theme park industry with a shout-out to the Universal Horror Make-up Show at Universal Studios Florida, the 12th seed in the Best Live Show bracket of the 2010 Best Theme Park Attraction Tournament.

Universal Studios Florida's Universal Horror Make-up Show

The Make-up Show was one of the original attractions at Universal Studios Florida when the park opened in 1990. In fact, the show was one of the few of the park's attractions that you could count on opening every day during that difficult first summer. Over the years, Universal's tweaked the show, but it retains its aggressive, irreverent humor, making it a favorite with many visitors.

Sure, you'll learn a few insiders' tips about how prop masters and make-up artists create effects for the screen, but mostly you'll laugh at the hosts placing audience "volunteers" in a variety of, uh, uncomfortable positions.

Here's a YouTube clip that gives you a taste of the flavor of the show's humor:

I give it a 9-Outstanding on the TPI scale. My only complaint is that contrary to some of the live shows at Disney, this show has too much momentum. It never slows down or takes the time to explain some actual effects. It's one of the few shows that I wish was a few minutes longer.

As of now, this and Nemo lead the live show bracket.

January 14, 2010 at 4:38 AM · I absolutely love this Show. There's more corn than a box of cereal but it runs along at a cracking pace. I'm always dubious about the veracity of the participating " audience member " but that doesn't much matter. It's always lively, funny and entertaining..........and we must have seen it at least 10 times.
Odd as it may seem I think it's sometimes funnier when you know what's going to happen next. Anticipation at the expense of surprise is something that Hitchcock would attest to.
January 14, 2010 at 5:38 AM · Love this show, agreed with other comments on the more adult humour. Whoever the special effects guy is that has done it the past 2 years.. Hes excellent, very funny indeed.

Plus on a hot/wet day its nice to be under cover for a while lol.

Enjoyed this show more the 2nd time round too

January 14, 2010 at 7:20 AM · Hooray for Bryce and Russell (the actors)!!! LOVE this show! Oh, and I can vouch for the authenticity of the audience volunteers... The rule is, pick the person in the audience who least looks like they want to volunteer, and extra points if you can find someone who speaks little or no English! The volunteers are not "plants."

I remember one Holloween contest I made my 7 year old daughter into a nurse with all the necessary medical stuff. Then when she got to the judges stand, she smiled at them, then opened her mouth slightly to show her fangs, and drooled out the fake blood I had placed into her mouth just before she got to them. She got second place out of about 20 kids.
