Kings Dominion teases new attraction for 2013

August 7, 2012, 9:22 AM · King's Dominion's website is teasing a new attraction for 2013. The teaser features a rocketship in space with the tagline "BREAKING RECORDS..AGAIN" and "THE COUNTDOWN BEGINS SEPTEMBER 12th (my birthday!)

I'm figuring it may be a launch coaster similar to Magic Mountain's Bizarro/Superman..without that height. It's a small footprint, and would give the park THREE launched coasters. I think THAT's what they mean by breking records, as I can't think, offhand, of another park that has as many. But of course, anything is pure speculation at this early stage of the game.

August 7, 2012 at 11:50 PM · As noted above, Kings Dominion already has three launched coasters, and I can think of at least two other Cedar Fair parks that do as well (Knott's has Montezooma's Revenge, Xcelerator, and Pony Express, and Cedar Point has Wicked Twister, Top Thrill Dragster, and Maverick). I don't believe there is any park that currently has four launced coasters, however.

As for what it will be, it almost certainly will not be like Superman: Escape from Krypton at SFMM. That ride has a huge footprint, it is just long and not very wide. Additionally, I highly doubt Intamin AG will ever build another reverse freefall coaster. If it is a compact launched coaster, it would most likely be more along the lines of SFDK's Superman. However, I've heard elsewhere that the new attraction will not be a new coaster, and will likely be an expansion of Planet Snoopy to give Kings Dominion the most kiddie rides on the East Coast.

August 8, 2012 at 2:49 AM · I completely forgot about Backlot Stunt Coaster, And when thinking of CP, I forgot about Wicked Twister and Maverick. And I really hope the "record" they're going for in NOT "most kiddie rides."
August 9, 2012 at 8:33 AM · I'm thinking Planet Snoopy expansion too - they just added a "thrill" ride with WindSeeker, so it's a good chance for the park to return to the family side of things.

Maybe it's going to be the tallest one of those or something.
