Disneyland confirms Fantasmic changes for its return this summer

April 17, 2017, 7:17 PM · After taking more than a year to reroute the Rivers of America to make way for Star Wars land, Disneyland will reopen the attractions closed by that project this summer.

The new river cuts into what was the top part behind the fort on Tom Sawyer Island, meaning shorter trips for the Mark Twain Riverboat and Sailing Ship Columbia. The Disneyland Railroad will take a new course over a trestle along the northern bank of the river. And even though the rerouting didn't have to affect the script of Fantasmic - which plays on the river at Disneyland - Disney has taken the opportunity presented by the long downtime to rework the show.

The new version will add Mickey Mouse into more scenes as well as swapping in new segments featuring the Genie from Aladdin, as well as characters and scenes from The Lion King, Tangled and Pirates of the Caribbean.

Disneyland has not yet announced an official return date for Fantasmic or the river attractions, beyond stating that they will reopen this "summer." We do have an official opening date, though, for the big new attraction this year at Disney California Adventure - Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout - which will open on May 27.

That date also will mark the kick-off of DCA's "Summer of Heroes" event, which will run through Sept. 10. The event will feature appearances by Black Widow, as well as a new Avengers Training Initiative show (think: Jedi Training Academy, but Marvel). Disney also will introduce Groot into the meet and greet rotation with Captain America and Spider-Man, as well as launch a new Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Dance Off show, but those are promised to continue into the fall and beyond.

April 18, 2017 at 4:16 AM · Is dragon still in fantasmic
April 19, 2017 at 5:40 PM · I would think the Dragon would still be in the show, that was a way to expensive character to be put into the show. But Disney has done some pretty crazy things in the past so who knows! I would sure think it would still be in it though!
April 20, 2017 at 5:44 PM · I'm the dragon and I can confirm that yes... I will be returning to the show.
