News updates from Knott's, Universal, and the ultimate Disney break-up

April 21, 2017, 5:09 PM · Knott's Berry Farm today opened its newest ride — Sol Spin, a Mondial Top-Scan that sends riders rotating in all directions on one of six spinning arms, up to a height of 60 feet. The ride stands next to Jaguar in Fiesta Village, on the spot formerly occupied by the Windseeker ride. If you'd like to check it out, remember that this weekend is the final weekend for Knott's Boysenberry Festival, too.

Also coming up this weekend is Dapper Day at the Disneyland theme parks on Sunday. The twice-yearly throwback-dress-up event hits the Walt Disney World Resort the week after that, April 29-30.

Last night in Hollywood, Universal officially opened its newly renovated AMC Universal Cinemas at CityWalk Hollywood. Director Steven Spielberg joined Jordan Peele (Get Out), Jason Blum (Whiplash), Will Packer (Straight Outta Compton), NBCUniversal Vice Chairman Ron Meyer, and Universal Studios Hollywood President Karen Irwin for the film-ribbon cutting. (We toured and wrote about the refurbishments at the CityWalk theaters a couple of months ago.)

California’s Great America announced today that it will run this season on 100% wind power. According to the park's press release,

Great America’s commitment to 100% wind energy – 12,810 megawatt-hours (MWhs) annually – makes it one of the largest renewable energy purchasers in the Santa Clara Green Power program and a member of the U.S. EPA’s Green Power Partnership’s Leadership Club. This annual clean energy purchase is similar to the output of four large-scale wind turbines – reducing Great America’s carbon footprint from electricity use by over 7 million pounds of carbon dioxide each year.

Finally, if this really happened (and the person posting it to Twitter claims to have been an eyewitness), then this jumps to the top of the list of the most jaw-dropping, theatrical guest fights ever to happen at the Walt Disney World Resort. If you haven't seen it yet, treat yo' self to a few moments of reading this train-wreck story.

April 22, 2017 at 9:15 AM · The Disney story was interesting. Would like video proof though. In modern times, why type that whole story out when you can just put it on Youtube instead.
April 22, 2017 at 10:18 AM · Was anyone filming that break-up? Because I expect to see it on College Humor or something like that soon. It seems waaaay too perfectly awful to have happened naturally.

And if it did happen legit, then we need to rip off this concept and start an "Awful Disney Tourists" vlog with staged scenes inspired by this.

April 22, 2017 at 9:42 PM · For me the big news is Great America switching to 100 percent wind power. If they can sustain a large operation on renewable energy we all can.
