Universal Studios shakes up its ice cream treats

January 28, 2018, 1:36 PM · UNIVERSAL CITY — Universal Studios Hollywood has brought the extreme milkshake craze to Southern California's theme parks.

The new Studio Scoops on the Lower Lot is offering three milkshakes with outlandish toppings, for $9.99 each:

S'mores and More: a vanilla and chocolate layered shake, topped with banana chips, graham cracker crumbs, whipped cream, chocolate syrup, and a toasted marshmallow stick.

Strawberry Indulgence: strawberry shake, topped with Trix cereal (or its generic equivalent — I didn't see the box), whipped cream, strawberry jam, and a chocolate covered strawberry.

S'mores and strawberry shakes

Chocolate X6: chocolate shake topped with brownies, chocolate shavings, chocolate whipped cream, and chocolate syrup.

Studio Scoops replaces the Ben & Jerry's ice cream window on the Lower Lot. Orlando visitors report that Cathy's ice cream in Islands of Adventure's Toon Lagoon is no longer serving Ben & Jerry's, either, so it appears that Universal's theme park deal with Ben & Jerry's may have ended, though a Ben & Jerry's scoop shop remains open in Hollywood's CityWalk.

Cathy's at IOA is just serving up soft-serve, so it looks like Hollywood got the better end here, though Toothsome pretty much has the Universal Orlando crazy shake slot covered already.

I tried the S'mores and Strawberry shakes, and the Strawberry was my clear favorite... for the better shake flavor and the huge, juicy, dark chocolate-covered strawberry "garnish" that's probably worth a couple bucks on its own, given what those sell for in chocolate shops these days. The very sturdy paper striped straws are a nice touch, as well.

Studio Scoops also serves four soft-serve swirls in cones or cups ($6.49):

Rounding out the menu are a pair of sundaes ($7.99): a Chocolate Carmel Delight, which has malted milk balls, caramel corn, chocolate shavings and whipped cream over a vanilla ice cream base, and a Strawberry Serendipity, which puts fruit poppers, cotton candy, a mini doughnut and lollipop atop strawberry jam, whipped cream and vanilla ice cream.

January 29, 2018 at 9:07 AM · I don’t get extreme milkshakes. I would prefer extreme waffle cones. I always order a waffle cone to my preferences. One time at Disneyland, people were Wow’d by my amazingly tall triple scoop heavily sprinkled and whipped cream and cherry on top in a chocolate covered waffle cone. Another time at California Adventure, I asked for the Mickey shaped sprinkles be on the chocolate covered waffle cone.
