Flight of Fear No More

Kings Dominion: New news from King's Dominion about Flight of Fear and what's happening.

I hadn't heard anything new about FOF at PKD so I called today. I actually just got off the phone with guest services and I have to say that I have bad news. FOF will be no more at PKD. It is and will stay closed forever more at PKD. Yes, the building is still there, but the lady that I spoke with said that the ride is either already moved, or it will be removed this year. All I can say is that Cedar Fair had better replace FOF with a ride that will fill the huge void that they have made by removing it. I'm very sad to see this ride be removed, but maybe it is for the good in the long run. Time will only tell...

Really?? Seems kind of strange that Paramount would be making plans to move or close the ride now that Cedar Fair will be taking over. Perhaps it was to be rethemed. When Kings Island rethemed the Kings Mills Log Flume into the Wild Thornberries River Adventure, they acted as if KMLF was leaving. Paramount does that kind of stuff.

I wouldn't worry a bit about it though. I have a feeling that Cedar Fair has big plans for Kings Dominion once they move in.

No clue what will happen but I would think Cedar Fair will make something that will be 10x as good as Flight of Fear.

I just got off the phone with guest services at Kings Dominion and they are moving it to another park. Right now they are taking apart the track to get ready to ship it to another park. My guess is Carowinds or Great America. I think Carowinds will recieve this ride because they don't have a launching coaster and Great America got a coaster this year.

PGA didnt get a new coaster, its a disco, not a coaster

From Jake Countiss
Posted May 28, 2006 at 12:03 PM
I still call it a coaster because it isn't a flat ride and it has wheels and tracks like a coaster Zach.

Also, FOF stands right in the way of a lot of land. When you ride the lift on Anaconda, you know that whole field to the left? That's all park land that apparently was used as the safari when PKD first opened. With taking out FOF, it gives them and entrance to a whole new section of the park that they could be building. Also, there's plenty of room for a nice sized coaster. I'm so excited to see what Cedar Fair is going to do!

Good riddance to FOF, I hated that headbanger. A totally new area of the park would be great and exciting.

From Pete Brecht

Randy, when was the last time you rode FOF? They replaced the OTSRs on that ride several years ago, so there's no more headbanging. How can you bang your head if there's only a lap bar?

From what I've read elsewhere, the ride will be relocated to Carowinds, where it will replace that park's Carolina Cyclone coaster.

From Jake Countiss
Posted June 5, 2006 at 6:03 PM
I don't know if their will be enough space for the ride in the area of Carolina Cyclone.

From steve lee

Jeez, Carolina Cyclone is running a little rough this year, but there's no reason for Carowinds to dump it. And I have to wonder what the thematic plan was for Flight of Fear in the Carolina Boardwalk area of the park (not that it matters with Cedar Fair in the captain's chair).

Maybe theyll put FOF down there and name it MTV:Soundwave......

From Rowan Booker

Yes, its just being re-themed. It should be open again with in the next few weeks.

From Sean Rust
Posted August 18, 2006 at 8:59 PM
Is it being non-paramount themed or is it getting an MTV theme?

From Jacob Palmer
Posted August 19, 2006 at 6:06 PM
How do you know that, Mollie? You may have seen this on Screamscape.com (I posted it), but when I was there last, I could see the that rear door to Flight of Fear was open, and that they were in there doing stuff. I also saw what looked to be an industrial size pressure washer near the ride...so this would make sense...Oh, and out of curiousity, did anyone besides me notice how dirty the line and spaceship were last year?

From Sean Rust
Posted August 19, 2006 at 6:34 PM
The word dirty is synonymous with PKD...

From Derek Potter

According to everyone, Flight of Fear is now open and there to stay. The previous management was considering moving the ride, but Cedar Fair put a stop to it.

I called guest services today and they said the FOF and Volcano are both running, so all is good 2 go!

From Jacob Palmer
Posted August 20, 2006 at 10:20 AM
Well, it used to be synonymous...in their defense, they have gotten much better...just they used to be how Carowinds is now....which is bad..but still, improvement is needed..haha

Does anyone know how the crowds are at PKD in october during fearfest?

From Dustin Kern
Posted August 20, 2006 at 4:31 PM
They aren't too bad for weekend crowds as long as you don't go the first one or actual Halloween weekend. Last year I went and it rained in the morning and the rest of the day it was walk ons on Volcano and Hypersonic.

From Jake Countiss
Posted August 20, 2006 at 4:39 PM
The fearfest is not as good as Busch Gardens. The haunted maze was also kind of cheasy. Stay away from weekends as Dustin Said and you should be fine.

I was at PKD in late July. Was FOF open at this time? I really hope I didn't miss it. From what I have heard it is pretty far out of sight, so I just wanted to make sure I wasn't a complete moron and didn't wind up missing FOF.

From Jacob Palmer
Posted August 20, 2006 at 11:34 PM
No, you didn't, it just re-opened last friday.

From Pete Brecht
Posted August 21, 2006 at 8:39 AM
Can anyone confirm that FOF is in fact open and running? I was just at PKD this past Thursday evening, and the construction fence was still up around FOF. Also, the PKD website makes no mention of FOF anywhere. You'd think that if they opened up one of their top rides after having it shut down all season, they'd make a point to let people know.

From Christy Shuman

I know when I spoke with PKD on the phone this past Saturday, he told me FOF is now up and running, I guess I'll find out for sure when I go.

From Joshua Jenkins

Yeah the FOF is still up and running strong. Just was there Saturday. Still worth the wait in line too!!

From Alex Silverman

Why was this ride closed in the first place and how long has it been closed? I'm upset it wasn't open for my Late-july visit to PKD or should I say CFKD (cedar fair) or just KD LOL.

From Christy Shuman
Posted August 21, 2006 at 4:33 PM
I heard they were trying to sell it but noone would buy it, then I heard they were gonna move it to paramount Carowinds so they would have a launch coaster, but Im glad PKD is keeping it!!!

From Adrienne McDonald

I was told via email it was just being rethemed.
Say it isn't so, why wud they spend $10 mil on it just to get rid of it. Makes more sense to revamp.

Is it still called "Flight of Fear" or is it the Mtv thing?

From Christy Shuman
Posted August 23, 2006 at 6:23 AM
Well if they were gonna keep it then why didnt they retheme it in the off season? I cant wait to see what they are actually gonna retheme it to next year.

From Christy Shuman

I think the first coaster that should go is Anaconda, I cant stand that neck jerker!

From Dustin Kern
Posted August 23, 2006 at 8:20 AM
I wouldn't mind seeing Anaconda go, that would mean something big is going to take it's place. What needs to go first though is Shockwave. That ride is aweful and it's capacity is horrible. That would be a nice place for a Huss Frisbee if they still make them anymore.

From Christy Shuman

What is a Huss Frisbee?

From Dustin Kern

maXair at Cedar Point. You can check it out right on their website . The airtime you get on them is insane and the ride would rival if not be better than Drop Zone.

Not saying the info is false, but I can't find any confirmation anywhere of this upcoming ride closure. And I have a hard time believing Cedar Fair would close FoF during the peak of the summer season when they have the entire off-season to accomplish a refurb.

However, if you find any other confirmation, please let us know.

I was there monday and we rode FoF a couple times. Don't know if it had any constellation, but there were no signs of it closing. (Expect a full tr from me in the next week)

From Frank Forrester

I haven't heard anything about it closing either on the local news in the area. I'll believe it when I see some mention about it on the local news or in the local newspaper or on KDs website.

From Charles Reichley

I'll say this -- FoF is getting a real workout now that they opened I-305. We were there for Father's day today, the crowds were actually pretty small, but the wait for FoF was longer than the wait for I-305 (that I305 really moves a ton of people quickly).

Since people walk past FoF after the Intimidator, they are stopping in to ride; plus it's open from the start of the day, when it used to open late.

I didn't see any sign they were working on it. And I'm not sure how they would make it "bigger" -- it barely fits in the building now, and the design is pretty congested.

Had they done anything to the Joker at Six Flags? It was the same coaster, just outside, and probably easier to make bigger.

Maybe they were just going to fix up the building and add some effects? I always thought they could have used some lighted alien effects in the ride.
