Which Saturday would be the best one to go there on the 20th or 27th? I want to avoid crowds as much as possible.

Either one is good but the 20th is probably the best because not many people are in the Halloween spirit yet.
Yeah, I went on the 20th last year (this year the 18th, my b-day!), and it was a little bit less crowded, but still packed because of HoS!
I have got to agree with the previous posters...the earlier in the season you go, the less crowded it will be. The first two Saturdays should be a little less crowded...but (weather permitting) all Saturdays of HOS you can anticipate a crowd.
Yes, much better to go on a sunday. But, FRIDAY IS THE BEST TIME TO GO. Unlike crappy SF parks, it's open on Fridays!

I already plan to go on the 3rd Saturday in October. I know it will be crowded then. I'm considering going this Saturday. If I do, I'll let ya'll know everything went.
Using history as a guide here, you probably won't have too many problems with the lines for either weekend in September. As you go into October though, you will see that the lines and such will get progressively worse.
In the past, they have had a Howl-O-Scream book that you could get that would let you get to near the front of the line for all Howl-O-Scream events. I will confirm if they are doing that this year when I go to the park tomorrow.
