Disneyland & California Adventure in one day?

Disneyland: I'm getting a little stir crazy and am thinking about a last min trip.

Can Disneyland and DCA combined be done in one day (from open to the midnight close) while not feeling rushed and having enough time to enjoy the little nuances of the parks? I read here that there's not really alot to do at DCA. I'm getting a little stir crazy and am thinking about a last min trip. Thanks, CR

Okay, here is a plan that I strongly suggest based off of what you have told me, but if there are rides on here you would not enjoy or you have certain special interests, please tell me and I can adjust this guide for you. And if you do not like my guide, you can mesh Robert's Four-Hour tour plans in one day. But just in case, here is what I would do:

1. Wait at the gates of Disneyland 1-hour early. Trust me, there will be long lines.
2. When the park opens, head directly for Space Mountain where you will most likely find at most a five minute wait.
3. Then catch a ride on Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin.
4. Next, head to FastPass Indiana Jones: Temmple of the Forbidden Eye.
5. While waiting for Indy, get in the 5-10 min. line for Pirates of the Caribbean.
6. Also before Indy, catch a ride on Big Thunder which will have anywhere from 5-15 minute line.
7. Ride Indy.
8. Fastpass Splash Mountain, then ride Haunted Mansion.
9. While waiting for Splash Mountain, you could enjoy any of the following:

-Mark Twain Riverboat
-Amazing Adventures of Winnie-the-Pooh
-Tom Sawyer Island

10. Ride Splash Mountain.
11. Enjoy a nice lunch at either this close restaurant to Splash Mountain and Winnie, or try out the very cool Blue Bayou located, right next to Pirates where you can watch the boats load off from the ride station while enjoying a delicious lunch under a dim lights beneath a dark sky.
12. Go and Fastpass Roger Rabbit.
13. Gadget Go Coaster ride.
14. Matterhorn ride.
15. Return to Roger Rabbit for an enjoyable ride.
16. Now it should be about three o'clock. Congradulations! You have finished off most of Disneyland!

17. Enter Disney's California Adventure where you should immediatly fastpass Soarin'.
18. Go take a ride on either California Screamin' or Toy Story Mania, whichever has the shortest line.
19. Ride Soarin'.
20. Fastpass either California Screamin' or Toy Story Mania, whichever you did not previously go with.
21. Return for River Rapids.
22. Fastpass Twilight Zone Tower og Terror.
23. Go To the hilarious Muppet-Vision 3-D.
24. Ride The Monster's Inc. ride.
25. Finish of DCA with returning to Tower of Terror for a chilling ride!
26. Now it should be about 7 or 8 o'clock. Decide wherever you want to eat dinner.

27. Head back into Disneyland for the firework show.
28. Finally, finish off the night with Fantasmic!

Congradulations, if you made it through this, you will have experienced all of the Disneyland Resort importance! For any questions, comments, concerns, hopes, or desires (come on, that had to be funny!) post here! :D

Nick has it down pretty well, but as long as you start on time and stay until close, you should be fine with doing both. Remember, both parks are not huge like the WDW's Parks. Still, there are a bunch of rides there. Like I said, you should be able to do it all!

Sounds great! Thanks for the advice. Would you guys expect a slight lull in the crowds in the weeks leading up to Christmas, maybe the first couple of weekends in December? I read on this site that with the birthday special and other deals that crowds at DL are still rather strong. Also, does anyone have any experience with the weekend after Thanksgiving? Would that be a bad idea (crowd-wise)?

I am not sure which of the two weeks would be worse. Most likely, the week before Christmas would not be the best choice. You should go after Thanksgiving when kids have to go back into school.

As to your first question: in its current form, DCA is definitely doable in a day (half day, even), but I would not short change Disneyland. You need at least two days there to do the park justice.

And to your second question: the least busy time of the year is generally the the week after Thanksgiving up to the week before Christmas. You are picking an excellent time to go to DLR. Try to avoid weekends, though, as the local population will descend en masse.

According to the Unofficial GT Disneyland 2009, there is a convention of 8,000 strong (and their families - I mean, wouldn't you take your family if you had a business convention near Disneyland?) in town December 6 - 13. This influx of "suits" will probably have more of an effect on hotel rooms than the parks themselves but, if possible, you might try to avoid that week. Just to be safe.

Whatever you decide to do, get plenty of pictures, and don't forget to post a trip report! Have fun!

^ I do not agree on a neccesary 2 days at DL as it took me a day to do the park plus roam the park 3 more hours until the fireworks & Fantasmic.

I would never short-change Disneyland the way I would my local iron ride park, Worlds of Fun. At WoF, I can bop in, ride the headliners and bolt before the crowds hit (did it today, in fact). At Disney, I like to immerse myself in the "Wonderful World of Disney" and experience everything the park has to offer. There is no way you can accomplish that goal in a single day of touring. It is nigh impossible.

If all you want to do is ride rides, go to Six Flags or Knotts. Disneyland is not that kind of place.

Thanks for all the input. I guess I'm like alot of you guys, I love Mil-Force and Nitro but I also love Pirates and the Haunted Mansion (the WDW versions, never been to DL) I know DL is a special place and I don't want to short change it.

I'll be glad to do a trip report. The week before labor day I did a huge road trip up the east coast hitting 10 parks. I was going to do trip reports but thought ya'll would be sick of me by that time.

I'm the guy that posted about getting his girlfriend interested in parks several months ago. I mentioned Disneyland to her the other night and she said "I'll go to DL with you". I'm slowly but surely making progress :)

^ Never been to Disneyland? That is great!

You will find that while Disneyland is much smaller than WDW, it has equal or even possibly MORE attractions itself. Plus the best part, all of those great attractions are packed into two visitable parks unlike the four week long visit WDW. :D
