Any ideas on how to make a good movie based on Haunted Mansion?
Disneyland: Pirates of the Caribbean was a success; the Eddie Murphy movie was a failure. How would you improve it?
Cast Johnny Depp for Haunted Mansion?
Make it really creepy?
Guillermo Del Toro is interested in directing this movie. Is he the ideal choice?
A genuinely creepy, not jumpy, horror movie seems suitable. There are very few ghost story horror films out these days. The Others is the last one I can think of, and that was a decade ago. It did well critically and commercially.
Guillermo del Toro IS making a Haunted Mansion movie. I think he is the wrong choice if they want this to be rated PG; his new movie has been rated R for sheer terror. However, his directing skills and scenery will definitely make this a movie to see; he is one of the few talented directors in the business currently. Personally, I can't wait for this rendition.
And I can't picture Johnny Depp in the Haunted Mansion. He would probably be either too comedic or too serious for any role in the film.
A Pan's Labyrinth style of movie without the violence would be ideal.

Firstly: was Eddie Murphy's "Haunted Mansion" that bad ? I didn't think it was so poor that it needs re-making.
Secondly : Are you trying to turn Johnny Depp into an kind of an adult male version of Lindsay Lohan by having him appear in every Disney movie venture under the sun ?
I didn't see the Murphy movie. I understand it was pretty awful, but it did make money, so I'm not sure it should be called a failure, Daniel.
I think Del Toro is an excellent choice because his last name rhymes with El T..sorry, Opening Day on the brain..
If he doesn't camp it up and plays it straight and scary, it'll be visually entertaining and worth the effort.
As far as Depp goes..I'm a fan of his. I don't see movies based on who's in them, but if I HAVE a favorite actor, it's Johnny. That said, I think ke needs to step back from the weird, over-the-top campy roles that have become his trademark (Hatter, Wonka, etc) and return to the type of roles he had early in his career that showed he was more than just the proverbial "pretty face." If this Haunted Mansion is a serious attempt at a good film with an Oscar-nominated director, I think Depp would fit.
Ugh not Depp. I do love his acting, but he's being so over used in over the top roles that I don't know if he can act anymore! I'm glad he turned down Disney's OZ role.
I'm less interested in the level of creepiness, and more interested in the story line. Afterall, the ride itself has a very loose story line and really doesn't have one definitive story but many at once. Which will be chosen? Or will they somehow incorporate all of them? Personally I'm hoping for an appearance of the hatbox ghost and maybe a pirate too.
Mike, it cost 90 million dollars to make the movie, and it only made 75 million at the box office.
That's a start, Daniel, but it's misleading. That 75 million is just the domestic figure. It made 106 million in overseas markets, and those two figures do not include DVD revenue. So, it was far from a failure.
Victoria,
del Toro's main focus for his Haunted Mansion is the hat-box ghost. I think this will be interesting.
Oh I didn't know if that was confirmed or not, this is exciting!!!! When is it coming to theaters? I'm very excited to see this now!
In 2012, I believe. I'm also really looking forward to it; I love the Haunted Mansion and Guillermo del Toro makes very good movies. If it has the creepiness of Pan's Labyrinth and the mythology of the Haunted Mansion, it's sure to be worth a trip to the theater.
Colton, this movie is not coming out in 2012. Guillermo Del Toro is just in the development stage of pitching ideas to Disney. Also, Del Toro is now in the pre-production of the remake of Frankenstein, so we will not see his Haunted Mansion anytime soon.
Oh. My sources have failed me.
