Who is the youngest competitor here? I'm 16, but I was wondering if anyone was younger than me...

I think it'd be cool to be the youngest competitor right now.

Karly, while it could have been better, I found your Italian restaurant proposal to be your best so far, don't give up! It was better organized than your others, but could have been a bit better in that regard.

I'm right near you, Bryce. I'm 15, 16 in November.

On the flip side, the Challenge 9 thread has an issue: in the little "about the thread" sort of thing (where it shows who posted the thread and a little description), it says Challenge 7, not Challenge 9.

Is EPCOT something you just don't "get" until you experience it? It seems from afar at least that the park is pretty unappealing... The rides don't excite me and with the exception of a few of the newer ones seem to just be things that you might ride once and never again... Am I missing something here?

It seems a great shame cos the more I piece together the bits of Walts original Progress City ideas, the more I wish I could jump in the old tardis and make em build it.

From Bryce McGibeny
Posted July 30, 2012 at 9:32 AM
You're missing the point that EPCOT really isn't about the rides... Maybe? It's really great.

So is it more about the theming and ambiance then? I can kinda see that in world showcase, but the future world stuff seems a bit confusing.

I'm 29, but I don't have my parents permission.

From Jeff Elliott

Epcot suffered from some of the same problems that California Adventure had....lack of attractions.

The problem with Epcot is that there is a lot to see and little to do.....as I already outlined, as a non-restaurant visitor, the World Showcase does nothing for me, but I had a nice amount of fun in Future World......but there should be more there.....

.....unfortunately Epcot has a weird legacy to live up to where all of the attractions are supposedly learning ones.....not that I learned much on Test Track or Mission Space....

......I think to make it better, Disney needs to dump some of the learning aspect and go for more E-ticket attractions.....but that is just an opinion...

......and WTH is wrong with the World Showcase?? There should be at least a D-ticket attraction (ride, not movie)for each country....

From Bryce McGibeny
Posted July 30, 2012 at 10:30 AM
The World Showcase does have The Maelstrom and that Mexican boat thing...

But I love The Maelstrom. It's cheesy fun and has a decent drop!

Manny, for your thirteenth birthday in September, could you please ask for some capital letters and some punctuation marks? If none are available, perhaps someone could teach you how to use them correctly on your hand-held device. I'm 55 and am so low-tech that I'm approaching Aztec, and I can use the capital letters and punctuation on my Blackberry. I suspect that a smart guy like you can also learn how to use them.

From Mike Gallagher

From Jay R.
Posted July 31, 2012 at 1:44 PM
Hey Manny, I'm sure everyone is glad that you're here, I wouldn't take anything too personal.

I don't think Dom was insulting you, many times people just make light hearted comments & because this is simply text entered on a message board, it's easy to take things differently than how they were intended.

I haven't been here long, but for the few months that I have, everyone here seems like cool, genuine people.

I think it's great that there's a variety of ages on the site, just shows how the theme park experience crosses all demographics & everyone here brings a different insight.

From Chad H

My understanding from previous judge comments is that its okay to use the same area/attraction/park/etc but you have to make sure its a different way of doing it.

Just to make it "official", yes, you may use any of the four listed available pavilions (Wonders of Life, Universe of Energy, Imagination or The Land). More than one competitor may use the same pavilion, as long as it is a different proposal and different concept.

I loved your idea Chad H! There used to be a similar perpetual motion machine at a place where I live called Sci-tech. Only it was all made of plastic and it triggered things like music and spurts of water. To start it off someone had to grab a ball and add it to the system. My sister and I used to spend hours playing with that thing, I would be so happy to see it at Epcot! Also, I lol'd when I read I could buy Newton's balls at the gift shop...

And for the record I am 23 and about to finish my uni degree, so if anyone spots spelling or grammar errors feel free to go to town on me (excluding Americanism...its World of Colour! COLOUR I SAY!)

And to think when I entered this contest I just wanted to win the "Eliminated too soon" cup... Now I have contestants bowing down to my superiorness. :-)

I'm proud of what I did, just not being able to see the space does make it hard. I just hope I managed to capture the spirit of both Epcots - the one that is, and the one that after seeing Walt's final movie several times, the one I would go back in time to make a reality.

Done. This one was hard as I haven't been to Epcot and have no idea how much can actually fit inside one of those pavilions. It doesn't help that I was on a trip and didn't get a chance to start working on this until Wednesday. I also wanted to avoid gutting it entirely and tried to preserve what was there in some form wherever possible. I think it's decent, but I've also got a feeling my competition might have me beat this round. At least I made it further than I expected (I thought I'd be out at the hotel challenge, or at the very latest the restaurant).

On a completely unrelated note (related to my trip, not the competition), if anyone is ever in the upstate New York/Ontario, Canada region, I strongly recommend visiting Canada's Wonderland. Definitely the best Cedar Fair park I have been to, and Leviathan is an outstanding coaster (Behemoth is really good too). Although it's not talked about much on here, Waldameer in Erie, PA is probably the best small park I've visited, and Ravine Flyer II at that park is a top five woodie. It is absolutely worth a visit as well if you are into amusement parks (it is not a theme park). Just do yourself a favor and skip Marineland Theme Park, a hybrid amusement park/marine life park located right next to Niagara Falls. It was very disappointing.

From Mike Gallagher

AJ. I thought Canada's Wonderland's coaster collection was pretty mediocre (I visited pre-Leviathan)..but their collection of flats is impressive, and I liked the park itself. As far as Waldameer goes, it's a gem of a park, and Ravine Flyer II is my #II coaster, behind only Toro. I was thinking of going out there in mid-September, but unfortunately, they close after Labor Day. I may make it to Kennywood, though. It's been more than three years since my last visit to those parks. Waldameer was my ONLY visit, and I really wanna get back.

From Dominick D

AJ, I loved your proposal, but for many the greenhouse is the highlight of LWTL and I'm not sure you should of removed that part. I think everyone did a great job, but I'm surprised nobody did WOL.

From AJ Hummel
Posted August 5, 2012 at 10:17 AM
^It seems like I always forget something and don't realize it until later, or I fail to specify how I envisioned it correctly. The idea of splitting them up is so that guests who only care about the dark ride can only ride that, and those who just want to see the plants can go straight into the greenhouses. I guess I should have mentioned that the Living Laboratory entrance would be right next to the Living with the Land exit, and signs would point it out to guests.

^^Behemoth, Leviathan, and Vortex are the only three Canada's Wonderland coasters I thought were great, but I thought Back Lot Stunt Coaster, Dragon Fire, SkyRider, and Mighty Canadian Minebuster were also decent rides. The remaining ones weren't that great (especially Wild Beast and Flight Deck...ouch). However, it was everything else about the park: the non-coaster rides, the theming at atmosphere, and the friendliness of the staff that made it better than other Cedar Fair parks I've visited.

NP, just didn't want to plant thoughts into judges heads...

Jeff, you're absolutely right about the lack of an E-Ticket attraction being a gaping hole. To my mind the top level needed a thrill ride as a "reward" for going through the rest (although the rest is of course skippable...); the original plan was I wanted a Roller Coaster, but beyond the name "Coldfusion" I couldnt get much further. I was thinking some kind of dualing coaster in shuttle mode where at the "far" point the two trains seem to meet head on before going through the track back to the station, but I just couldn't figure out enough more to make it work, and was a little concerned about placement (it would have to go out over the carpark - not very magical) and that it might overshadow everything else; a motion sim was out because I already had that in "Fantastic Invention".

Centrifuge kinda ended up there as a distant second choice (although in Disney tradition it does include a reference to what came before in the Coldfusion theme).

I had almost completed a proposal which instead uses the imagination pavilion which didn't have this issue (but instead had a few other major problems...) when I get home from work I might post it up if I've still got it - Edit, I don't. Darn. Sorry

I have a question:

1) Where is Avatar going to be located?

And thanks David, it sure has been fun.

From Tim W
Posted August 5, 2012 at 4:51 PM
Bryce,

1. The 3 attractions need to include rides and experiences, which can be coasters, animal encounters, dark rides, water rides, etc. The restaurant and shop are separate factors.

2. Avatarland (which from what my recent Keys to the Kingdom tour suggested will be called Pandora: The World of Avatar) does not have an official placement yet. It is rumored to be placed in Camp Minnie Mickey, or in the back of Africa. This should not affect the placement of your land this week, as the location of this land is still up for debate.

For any of those more interested on this Avatar information: The project is supposed to be greenlit after the Snow White Mine Train Coaster is completed, and is projected to be completed late 2014, early 2015. Our guide also informed us that the 5th theme park is said to be greenlit after Pandora is completed.

The AvatarLand is going into Camp Minnie/Mickey.....The construction in the Africa section is for the new home of the Lion King show, since its current home is going to be changed to Pandora.

David, I think it would be best if everone waits until all proposals have been made before anyone starts with public critiques on an individual proposal, other than a "nice job!" kind of comment. Of course, if you want to send it privately to them that is always an option if they are open to it.

As far as "claiming" a continent,we never said that the same one can't be used by more than one competitor, just like in the past challenges. As long as the proposals are obviously unique I don't see any problem with it.
