Beetlejuice Getting an Update

Universal Studios Florida is going to open a new version of its 'Beetlejuice Rock 'n' Roll Graveyard Revue' on June 15th. This is reported to be same version of the show that's running in Japan.

I went to Universal Studios Florida and I noticed that they closed the Beetlejuice Rock 'n' Roll Graveyard Revue. The park map called it: "The All New Beetlejuice Rock 'n' Roll Graveyard Revue" and it said that it has a brand new sound. Next to the threater there was a big sign that said that it will open June 15th. I think it's a great idea seeing as almost everything in Universal is getting an update. What do you think about it?

We actually talked about it elsewhere, but once it is up and running, hopefully we can get some reviews.

Personally, I think updating this show is a must! It's cute and all, but a tad moldy. And I would think an update couldn't cost too much. It seems like this show would be easy to update every few years, just to keep it fresh.

You know, I blame the Beetlejuice Show at USF for the decline of modern music; after all, several Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync members got their first break performing in that show....then there was the new Mickey Mouse Club that resulted in Brittany Spears and Christine Agulara...

I have the inside scoop from a Universal Employee. I was told that the June 15th date on the sign you saw is accurate. Also they couldn't reveal to me everything about the show but, they said they have a new set with a couple of surprises. Maybe this update isn't so bad after all.

Why couldn't they reveal to you the details? It's no secret that the new show is a shortened version of the show currently running in Japan (several other message boards have already comvered this information). With the exception of replacing the Phantom of the Opera's organ (because he is not in the new show), the set has not been changed much. The music, choreography, and costumes however, are completely different from the previous show.

My question is, if Graveyard Review is just getting an update and will still use Beetlejuice, then will BJ still be a part of the Ghostbusters Show? How will that pan out?

From Kevin Baxter

I think the Ghostbusters thing is a temporary thing while the Beetlejuice Revue is down. Then they will probably go back to touring the park.

From Park Hopper

No, the Ghostbusters show is a permanent addition to the show roster as well as the Monster show (for the foreseeable future, anyway).

My guess is that the thinking is that since the two shows are in two different areas of the park (NY and San Francisco) and the show scheduled will be staggered accordingly, there's no chance of the two BJ's running into each other and spoiling the illusion.

From Joe Lane
Posted June 11, 2002 at 7:10 AM
Okay, sounds alright. And the show times being staggered, that sounds good too (although I'd imagine BJ could use his powers to appear in two places at once).

But are two shows featuring Beetle really necessary? I'm a Beetlejuice fan, the movie is great (and Tim Burton is a filmmaking genius, in his own, twisted way), and I'm glad the Ghostbusters have their own show now, too, but I think this is kinda overkill with Beetle.

I've never seen the Japan show, but I hope the USF show still has the same characters and costumes cause the costumes were changed not to long ago and I just saw a picture of the costumes of the Japan show in this site and the costumes don't look as good as the ones in USF, at least in my opinion.

From Park Hopper
Posted June 11, 2002 at 8:30 PM
Nope, sorry. There is no Phantom of the Opera in the new show and two female characters have been added (backup singers for BJ named Hip and Hop). The costumes will be similar to the Japan show, altered where necessary to allow for performing in an outside venue in the Orlando heat as opposed to an inside venue in Japan.

From Javier Catalan

Well at least I hope the make up stays the same cause I think the USF one is the best compared to the pic in this site. :)

Well, today's the day the new show opens with performances at 12, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Anyone planning on catching it? For various reasons, I'd be interested in hearing what you think (especially the middle two shows).

From Robert Smith

Well, the show actually opens Monday, today is Technical Rehearsals with the audience. I caught the 2PM show. It's modernized and has new costumes and music. The Phantom is gone, the old organ prop is now a Beetle Juice Throne. If you liked the old show you'll like the new show. It's still rated "R" and seemed to have good audience participation. The BJ puppets remain but now done to YMCA, cool. I can't give it all away. I work there so my report may be biased, but I liked the new show. I took a few digital pics that didn't turn out well. I also checked out the Ghost Busters Show - 3rd time. At first I thought it was pretty corny but the people loved it. It's growing on me and the crowd still loves it. I walked both parks and I think they're looking pretty good getting ready for the summer season.

From Park Hopper
Posted June 15, 2002 at 5:57 PM
true, actual opening is Monday... although with the exception of the rain stopping the 4pm show, the 12pm, 2pm, and 5pm went off without a hitch (they canceled the 1:00 & 3:00 shows ahead of time).

Robert, how bad are your pics? I'd really be interested in seeing them!

From Kevin Baxter

Okay. I have deleted all reference to the old Beetlejuice show on the USF page. So if you have seen the show, head on over there and rate it.

I've seen the new Beetlejuice show. Well, lets just say I like the old one much better. I'm sure some people will like the new show but, it's already gotten some bad reviews from guests as well as employees. But, I say, give it a chance.

From Javier Catalan

Well I went ot the show and I enjoyed it. Now it gets the audience more involved and seems more energetic. But there are somethings I liked about the old show more than this one. I don't really like Wolfman's make up, personally now I think he looks like a reject from the show Cats. Frankenstein's and Dracula's songs could have been better. But I really liked everything before that. In my opinion all in all it was an enjoyable show.

I forgot to metion this on my last post. They had the 2 Beetlejuice shows at the same time for all most the whole day and only a couple of them being at different times.

From Park Hopper

hmmm... interesting! Well, if the shows are at the same time, then I guess there's REALLY no way the two BJs can bump into each other, huh? :-)

I am so lost. What does all that even mean??? Two shows??? Where???

From Park Hopper

There's the Graveyard Revue and there's also a Ghosbusters show featuring BJ, which plays on the stes of the NY Library facade.

From Kevin Baxter
Posted July 6, 2002 at 4:53 AM
Oh, I thought they would be getting rid of BJ in the Ghostbusters show when his show opened. That's kind of dumb. How integral is he to the GB show? Is he the ghost?

From Steve Warren
Posted July 6, 2002 at 7:55 AM
Considering you only see him once every year on TBS or something I think he actually is the ghost

From Park Hopper
Posted July 6, 2002 at 8:04 AM
Yes, he is the ghost in the Ghostbusters show.

From Joe Lane
Posted July 6, 2002 at 8:37 AM
Haven't you heard that, Kev?

Beetle shows up, then the Ghostbusters, who try to bust him, but he uses his powers to turn them into a bunch of dancing clowns, dancing to classic songs and recent pop chart toppers. It's goofy for all intents and purposes, but it's the standard fare I've come to expect for Universal shows.

Still it's good to see characters from two classic movies interacting together. I've always been a geek that way.

Sounds better than the Blues Brothers. But no, we never really got a review of the Ghostbusters show and I honestly thought it would disappear. Maybe they should do something like this over in the Men in Black plaza. The Men in Black could go after ET when all of a sudden Doc Brown shows up in his Delorean to save the little guy!

I went to USF 4th of July and they did have a MIB show, Their Were two Agents and one Alien, They drove the car and showed people their guns, and also did the MIB dance.

From Joe Lane
Posted July 6, 2002 at 2:59 PM
*laughs* Right, Kev. And yeah, they did have a small mini-show, although it actually had more of a storyline--two agents pull up in an LTD, say there's an alien tourist in the crowd, pulls members of the crowd up (along with the alien, who wandered up on their own), do a series of tests, catch the alien and puts it in the car, which begins to smoke and the alien splatters against the window (the splat is kinda cheesy, but still nice) at which point the agents use a diversion tactic--Agent Jay's MIB dance... meanwhile, the alien appears in the driver's seat and takes off in the LTD, leaving the two agents chasing after it. I actually watched the whole thing, so I must've found it entertaining. :-)

From Kevin Baxter

Doesn't sound too bad. They just drove up when we were there and acted cool. At least Doc Brown was scaring the bejeezus out of people. That is loads of entertainment there.

I just watched that MIB show yesterday and I must admit I didn't like it a lot. The only thing I liked was the alien guy when he was in the crowd bothering people, some people started looking at him like they thught he was just some crazy guy. I knew he was part of the show cause the last time I was their I just saw the last part of the show cause it didn't have a showtime in the schedule paper thing like they do now.

The guy that posted above me must be psychic (or however you spell it) cause I went to Universal on Thursday and I saw that they cut the last part of the show, the one with the na-na-na-na-na. And I was just going to post about it today, but he beat me to it. :) And that was one of my favorite parts of the show, too. :(

From Kevin Baxter
Posted July 30, 2002 at 3:26 AM
Well, haven't seen it, but does BJ really need to be in two different shows? Add someone else! Where's Casper? LOL!

A little off the subject, but I was curious if anyone has seen the Gory, Gruesome update. If so, let us know what has changed and if it is better or worse than the previous show.

the guy is a girl. i don't hold it aganist b/c you didn't know. well, let's save it. i have made enough hype for it to be brought to the reivew board. but i still need more help. please help. it's my fav part too.

Well the new horror of make up show is very different, but they still show some of the same things. The whole stage is new, even the floor is now more colorful, now you may get wet a little. The only things they kept the same was when they get the guest and use the knife at the beginning, but they changed that a little bit and it know looks better, they also still have the American Werewolf in London video with the masks, and a video on how they did some of the effects on the mummy return. Now they try to scare the volounteer more which works better now. Everything else is different and it's much better now.

It's funny cause one of the days I went to it the guy playing Mark James played him in the old show and appearantly was still getting used to the new show cause the host's name used to be Dan and it's now Alex so he kept calling Alex Dan. :)

And I didn't know that was a girl above me. :)

Two Beetlejuice shows isn't that bad cause the way they do them is different. :)

i agree. i just want the second half of my show back. help me please. even if you haven't seen the show. this show is everything to me.

From Park Hopper
Posted July 30, 2002 at 7:06 PM
Actually, the only thing that was cut from the show was the closing number (the one they sang live)... probably about 5 minutes, not "the second half".

I have to admit, I'm curious as to your obsession with the show... and the use of phrases such as "my show" and "the show is everything to me", not to mention your campaign to get the last 5 minutes restored.

What do you find so special about it?

From Javier Catalan

That's what I said they took out the na-na-na part. I like the show, but not that much. :)

But who knows maybe she made it up. :)

the performers love the show. their energy radiates off the stage. i know the performers. it's a good show. and the part deserves to be brought back. i won't let that half die. just please help.

From Amanda Koski

the reason why this means so much to me is b/c i have two loves. they are performing and engineering. both elements are in that show, that's why i can't see this happen. that show is such a stress reliever for me. this is coming from the heart. i have a sucky life in my small hick town and when i get to get out of here and let the real me at i am so happy so one can understand. so please just help.
