Daudi Bamuwamye, 4, of Sellersville, Pa., died at Celebration Hospital on Monday, June 13, 2005, after passing out while riding Mission: Space that afternoon. The boy did meet the 44-inch minimum height requirement for the ride. An autopsy was planned to determine the cause of death. According to the Associated Press, six people over age 55 were taken to hospitals for treatment of chest pain and nausea after riding Mission: Space during an eight-month period in 2003-04. None were found to have any serious problem.

The child's death was finally determined to be caused by a pre-existing heart condition that the parents were not aware of. [For more information about this incident, visit http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/11/15/disney.death/] -- Submitted by kiyuchan on 12/18/2005

No Date Reported - Spaceship Earth - Submitted by Spidey on 11/6/2001
You may have noticed the path on the side of the ride. One time the ride stopped and a kid got out and started playing around on the path. Then he slipped and the ride started up again and tore open his leg.

  • Follow-up:
Several people were injured in multiple incidents at Spaceship Earth in the late 1980s and early 1990s, on the loading platform, while entering or exiting the ride. Riders, usually children, would have their pant legs or socks get caught between the rotating platform and ride units, causing leg injuries of varying seriousness. In addition, siginificant injuries resulted from people trying to jump between cars while on the ride. These incidents were documented in internal accident reports filed by Disney employees, that I saw when I was an employee there. -- Submitted by robert on 11/21/2001

9/8/2003 - Mission: Space - Submitted by Name Withheld on 9/30/2003
I loved the "Mission: Space" ride, myself. They have lots and lots of warnings before you get on the ride...more than usual. I was in Walt Disney World for one week, and went on this ride about 6 times. Out of those six, two times the ride was temporarily shut down. Once when someone threw up on the ride, and it had to be cleaned up. The second time a stretcher was brought in because a man passed out or had a heart attack, I'm not exactly sure which. I just wanted to point out that if 2 out of 6 times is the usual average for incidents on this ride, it won't last long. It definitely is the most intense ride I have ever been on. The G-force pulls the skin on your face back...lots of fun, but the barrage of warnings before the ride are there for a reason! This one is just waiting for a law suit, in my opinion.

I went on it right when it opened to the entire public (first week, maybe even day)and the second time that my family went on this, we had to wait because somebody puked all over the place. This ride is not for the faint of heart, but it does warn you verbally seven times (I counted) and gives you barf bags. Disney might get sued, but it isn't thier fault. -- Submitted by coasterdude on 7/2/2004

12/23/1996 - Maelstrom - Submitted by Name Withheld on 2/27/2003
Great ride but at the end of the ride, as a boat two ahead of us was unloading, we were hit fast and hard by the boat behind us, pushing us forward and bumping us into the boat ahead of us. I strained my back and neck, sore for 3 days. I'm a medical professional so treated myself.

This happened to someone in our group. He had his head turned to the side, and when the boat behind us ran into us, he strained his neck. Nothing serious, but he was sore for a few days. Those with back or neck conditions should be alert and ready at the end of the ride. This happened in early June. -- Submitted by El_Scotto on 7/13/2005

A woman separated her shoulder on Test Track when the ride broke down. It was doing the brake test, and suddenly the ride stopped. The seat belt slipped and seperated her shoulder. For more detail, see this link.
