The first wooden racing/dueling coaster in the United States. This ride is nothing but awesome to behold. Named Thunder and Lightning, these two trains first race, then seem to 'attack' each other by circling back and forth, over and under, and all around ... a (seemingly) very long ride from its 90' initial plunge to the end of the ride where you will find your train to be the 'winner' or not. A MUST for roller coaster enthusiasts. Designed by Great Coasters, International and installed in 2000, the ride features a total of 6800' of track (3400 each side) and speeds up to 50mph.
Towering above Midway America at Hersheypark is Lightning Racer. This is widely considered to be one of the greatest wooden coasters in the world and it is true. Built in 2000 by GCI, the ride features a racing and dueling aspect where trains are dispatched at the same time. They race neck and neck through most of the ride and split off at point to face each other head on in dueling sections. Two trains named Thunder and Lightning barrel at speeds of 51 miles per hour providing some great airtime over hills and lateral g's through each turn. This ride is also a capacity machine with four trains running, there's never a long line for this ride. It is also worth mentioning that Lightning Racer's trains have recieved some controversial TLC including new paint, padding, and lap bars. Some welcome the change while others despise it.
