The Crypt

Dark ride
Minimum height to ride: 54 inches

By Mark Marker
Posted: August 4, 2010

NOTE: This ride is going to be transformed into The Crypt: Firefall with Fire Effects, New Decor, and The soundtrack from The Crypt in Kings Dominion and Firefall in California's Great America. But as of Summer 2009 it is mainly a spin ride in near total darkness.

An ancient themed top spin ride which was formerly known as Tomb Raider: The Ride. After Kings Island was given to Cedar Fair, the rights to the Tomb Raider movies vanished. This means if any of the original music and details had something to do with any of the Tomb Raider movies, they must be taken away. That is also why the name had been changed to its current name The Crypt.
In the original ride, riders wait in a mysterious cave queue which is where you watch a short pre-show before getting on the massive gondola. You are raised up and a God holding two gems for fire and ice encounters you. The gondola hurls you towards piercing icicles. Than you are warmed up upside down over bubling lava and finally you encounter an erupting volcano until the ride ends.

I have heard that the tomb raider version was much better. Unfortunately it was true. This was a very boring ride. Just a bunch of flips that you could get in a loop on a roller coaster. Skip this ride. - Michael Hurley

People actually booed at the end of this ride. I turned to my boyfriend in the holding area and said "this must have had more to it originally." That was because they have a giant bat creature that grunts a few times before you get in the actual ride which spins in darkness a few times. The fact they hollowed this out and didn't replace any effects is an insult to theme park attendees. I wrote them an email and basically they said the ridership is up and their tone was "we don't care what you think." - Mark Marker

I feel bad for this ride. It used to be such an amazing ride with a good story and effects but everything is gone. I wish they brought Tomb Raider:The Ride back. - Penelope Newman

BORING! WTF is this ride? This is inside which seems stupid and it has no effects and is over in like 30 seconds! Horrible! Kings Dominion is proving to be so much better than KI! - Adam Clinard

Well, it's a shame, but what was once a great ride has become such garbage. I waited 45 minutes for this thing, and what did I get? Two, maybe three flips, only one of which was intense. Way too short, and not nearly worth the Level 5 Intensity Rating the park smacks on it. If you are seeking big-time thrills, look elsewhere. Far better rides are very close. However, the line is quite nice. - Jon Williams

rode the Tomb Raider version. Good theming, decent ride. - Will Chilcote

A lamed up version of it's fomer ride (Tomb Raider)... all the decorations have been removed and were not replaced, the line is now just a walk around what looks like a large, dark garage, and even the ride itself seems shorter and less exciting... A Cedar Fair sacrifice in order to build good coasters. - Byron Smith

I wish I could have seen it with the TR theming turned on. Still fun, but way too short a ride. Glad I didn't have to wait very long. - Larry Zimmerman

Although the waiting queue is highly-themed, the ride itself is a disappointment for many. Housed inside an empty and boring building, guests are left fipping around in the dark. If placed outside or given more themeing, however, the many flips and drops would be responsible for this attraction's high rating. - Ty Mullins
