Knott's Berry Farm today announced the opening date for its new 4D steampunk-inspired shooter ride, Voyage to the Iron Reef. The ride will open to the public on Friday, May 15, 2015, with a media preview on Wednesday, May 13.

Knott's will be hosting local junior and senior high school students on the ride on Thursday, May 14, for a "Voyage Day" when they'll learn about creating 3D/4D attractions from the creative team at Triotech, which is developing the ride's interactive screen elements for Knott's.

Here's a video teaser for the ride:

And here is Knott's latest description of the attraction:

Voyage to the Iron Reef will be a spectacular new interactive 4-D attraction for the entire family. Save Knott’s from mysterious creatures emerging from the seas beneath the Boardwalk in a cutting edge media-based battle. Through enchanting underwater forests, disorienting ocean current tunnels, and mysterious mechanical wreckage, high definition 3-D animation will surround guests at every turn.

Guests who have what it takes to become brave deep sea navigators will climb aboard submarine-inspired ride vehicles and embark on an adventure into the Iron Reef that combines the fun of a theme park ride with the interactivity of high tech video games. The submarines will navigate 600 feet of track and 11 colossal scenes featuring hundreds of media-based creatures and live action special effects.

The interactive voyage features a different experience every time and reacts to the actions and accuracy of the guests onboard. Riders will aim their freeze rays at ballooning mechanical puffer fish, an iron clad octopus and other exciting 3-D creatures as they compete against their friends and family to blast the most sea life and save Knott’s from a watery doom. The number of creatures taken is digitally displayed onboard and in the undock area – players with the highest score will be entered into the Iron Reef’s Hall Of Fame.
