Universal’s Casper on Disney Plus

A deal has recently been announced involving the classic cartoon character and two major theme park competitors, Universal and Disney. In what was announced as a competitive bidding process, a modern take on the friendly ghost will be arriving on Disney Plus courtesy of UCP, a division of Universal. Universal owns the rights to this character, a result of the company's purchase of Dreamworks Animation and its Dreamworks Classic subsidiary.

I find this deal interesting from a theme park perspective. Let's say for S&G that the Casper reboot is a Wednesday type success on Disney Plus. Unless an additional deal was reached for theme park rights, Universal Parks will be able to take advantage of this good fortune and have Casper meets and greats and merchandise featured at their parks. And maybe a ride down the road like say Casper's Coaster at Dark Universe?

Disney fans who grew to love the character on D+ will need to travel down the road to get their Casper fix. I know there already is overlap between Kabletown and the Mouse with The Simpsons and Marvel, but I find it interesting that the two theme park giants are getting into bed on another project that could cause conflict down the road.

I'll be interested to see how this goes. It's surprising to me that this franchise has any legs left on it. How much longer before Casper is in the public domain?
