Famous Landmark Names - Orlando
When we first get to Florida after of course deplaning and getting the rental car from Alamo (Free plug hare), we make our way to the Sheraton Resort (2nd free plug)... We always look for my favorite signal or sign that we are back on vacation.
First the palm trees then we see the John Young Parkway sign.
And for some reason if you read it fast it sounds Asian.
Since I love seeing that sigh, curiosity got the better of my little brain and I had to see who he was.
John Watts Young was an American astronaut, naval officer and aviator, test pilot, and aeronautical engineer. He became the ninth person to walk on the Moon as commander of the Apollo 16 mission in 1972.
John Young was a legendary NASA astronaut and the only person to fly on three distinct spacecraft programs: Gemini, Apollo, and the Space Shuttle.
WOW pretty amazing stuff.
Then I often see Doctor Phillips' name on many different things - streets, schools and a Hospital. Again lets see what makes him special in Orlando.
Dr. P. Phillips (Philip Phillips) was a pioneering citrus magnate, entrepreneur, and major philanthropist who shaped modern Orlando. Born in Tennessee, he earned a medical degree from Columbia University but relocated to Central Florida in the 1890s to build an agricultural empire. By the 1920s, he owned the largest citrus-growing operation in the world.
Phillips is famous for pioneering flash-pasteurization to can citrus juice without a metallic taste. After selling his operations to Minute Maid in the 1950s, he established the Dr. P. Phillips Foundation, which has since donated hundreds of millions of dollars to Central Florida.
Now I am sure there are more but these stood out to me and I just had to look them up.
