Bob Iger finds $12 Billion in his Couch Cushions

August 12, 2026, 1:24 PM

It was reported this morning an ownership group lead by former Disney CEO Bob Iger and Josh Kushner of Thrive Capital (and brother of the current US President's son-in-law) cobbled together $12+ billion to purchase the Los Angeles Lakers, which makes it the highest price ever paid for a sports team. The 2 were reportedly leading a group to potentially purchase an NBA expansion franchise for the Las Vegas market, but some potentially shady financial dealings from current Laker owner Mark Walter, who purchased majority stake in the team just last year from the Buss family (long time owners), made the league's crown jewel franchise available to the highest bidder. After Kushner failed in conspiring with FIFA President Infantino in privatizing that organization's popular tournaments last month for a reported $20+ billion, that money was available to combine with Iger's pocket change to buy one of the most storied sports teams in the world.

Must be nice to quit your day job with enough money in the bank (and willingness to partner with some of the slimiest businessmen on the planet) to double the record for richest sports team sale in history.

Iger embraces MAGA's first family to buy the LA Lakers. Let's see how that affects the crowd's response at the Disney Legends ceremony on Sunday.

Let's also see how quickly the administration drops its investigation of Walter now that he has sold the the Kushners. LOL

Well, this is certainly an NBA...experience.

Joshua Kushner is a clown like his father

Charles Kushner pleaded guilty to filing false tax returns, making unlawful campaign donations, and retaliating against a cooperating witness.

The Witness Tampering: The witness tampering charge involved hiring a prostitute to seduce his brother-in-law, recording the encounter on video, and mailing the tape to his own sister to deter them from cooperating with federal

The Whole family is corrupt....

Presidential Pardon: President Donald Trump (whose son Jared Kushner is married to Charles's oldest son) issued a full pardon to Charles Kushner on December 23, 2020

What a joke - Go Celtics....

Yeah! And also ... theme parks!

Welp, good to see Iger landed on his feet? SMH

If Mr. Iger announced he was going to invest $12 billion in a charitable effort to end a debilitating disease, someone on TPI would launch a discussion thread that criticized his initiative.

August 13, 2026, 9:05 AM

@TH - Are you trying to insinuate this isn't pertinent news to theme park fans on the eve of Iger achieving "Disney Legend" status at D23?

August 13, 2026, 9:14 AM

Plastic Bob certainly had a hell of a severance pay out.

@TH semi-creative:

If Mr. Iger announced he was going to invest $12 billion in a charitable effort to end a debilitating disease, someone on TPI would launch a discussion thread that criticized his initiative.

But he does not..... He did not will not and never will... hahhhahahaha

Sure we don't actually care if some rich greedy clown invest in an NBA team. We just love to rip Iger... Plus the NBA is horrible lately. No one actually knows what traveling is anymore, the last two minutes of a game last 20 minutes. Time out, player subs, replays, challengers, TV timeouts, fouls....

Watch Hockey it you want a real sport - for fake Drama watch Soccer where a player gets scratched and rolls around on the ground like he was shot....

@Russell: I'm not insinuating anything. I'm actually saying in no uncertain terms: "If Mr. Iger announced he was going to invest $12 billion in a charitable effort to end a debilitating disease, someone on TPI would launch a discussion thread that criticized his initiative".

Is that really too difficult for you to grasp that direct contention?

@TH - Apples and oranges my friend. For me, this is not just about the financial means Iger now possesses as the recently departed CEO, but his primary partner in this venture (and their recent business dealings) along with the timing of this during the week of D23 where Iger's appearance at the Legends induction event will carry a very different vibe.

To directly address your query, I would say that if Iger did invest $12 billion this week into a charitable effort to end a debilitating disease that was spearheaded by the current Secretary of Health and Human Services, it would receive a fair amount of criticism and would be equally newsworthy here given the timing.

August 13, 2026, 11:25 AM

And I would say that if Iger did invest $12 billion this week into a charitable effort such as the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, or the Wounded Warrior Project, or the United Kingdom's Teen Cancer Trust, some internet dweller would find a way to attack him.

My God! If Mr. Iger paid to have a Santa Claus in every hospital to visit sick children during the holidays, somebody would (loudly) complain that "Iger is Jewish".

FWIW, Bill Gates and other immensely rich people get criticized for directing their wealth to various charitable organizations. That's just par for the course when an individual has more money than the GDP of some countries. Iger would naturally receive some additional criticism because of his prior high-profile position and the feeling from some that the company that he led for 2 decades excessively profited during his tenure, leading to Iger having the financial security to amass such a huge sum of money, regardless of how it's directed. I think anyone publicly throwing around billions of dollars is exposing themselves to criticism, which is why so many philanthropists either give anonymously or do so through a foundation.

@ TH if I post that Bob Chapek is publishing a book on his tenure in The Walt Disney Company -- do you think most comments are going to be about the book or something else?

August 15, 2026, 11:58 AM

@Handsy: How can someone comment on the contents of a book that hasn't come out?

August 15, 2026, 1:40 PM

@TH - How can someone comment on the financial solvency of a spun-off company that hasn't produced a single SEC filing since separating from its former parent?

August 15, 2026, 1:41 PM

@Russell: What on earth are you talking about?

August 18, 2026, 2:22 PM

LOL
