D23 is a great place to meet and connect with other Disney fans. And you will have no other choice, because you will be packed in with those fans from the moment you arrive on the sidewalk outside the convention center.
Disney is a mega-brand at this point, so D23 brings together Marvel and Star Wars and Disney and ESPN and other TV brand fans, so there's definitely a mix. The sharpest divide might be the theme park fans and the filmed media fans, though there is quite a bit of overlap there.
The test there to see which camp you are in is... who would be the bigger celebrity that you would be more excited to see - Joe Rohde or Dwayne Johnson?
Disney also tries to encourage people to make it a vacation, with D23 Day at Disneyland and a D23 night at an Angels baseball game. There's no Disney bubble, per se, in Anaheim, but the resort is walkable, and there is plenty of transportation over to the stadiums for events there.
So if you're into all that, sure, it's worth the money.
Is there a UO23? because I would absolutely pay to go there.
When Piston Peak and Villains Land open, the park's capacity/crowds will increase dramatically. Is the company giving any consideration to how it can better manage the end-of-day logjam that occurs as people are exiting the park? Are there any plans to better manage transporting people to the parking lot?

My biggest fear in the future is Disney locking down their Con appearances to only Disney "owned and operated" events. Thankfully that hasn't happened, and I applaud Disney for still providing exclusive announcements and footage to SDCC and other venues. If Disney or other media proprietors decided to go the walled-garden approach, I think the current mega-con feel of SDCC could go the way of E3 and die a swift death.
So long as Disney does not own all the theaters its movies play at, nor the channels it can license content through, it will play with other Cons. The Con exists to help the IP make money, not the other way around.
By the way, I can confirm there will be (at least) one surprise reveal during the Saturday night show that Jake and I did not anticipate during our podcast episode this week.

As someone who has never attended -- is it worth the money? I'm the biggest fan of Disney's parks, but less so other aspects of the company. I enjoy their films and TV shows well enough, but I wouldn't consider myself a die-hard in any of those areas (used to be pretty plugged-in to Marvel movies until they went off the rail).
I've been to SDCC before, and what I love about that environment is that you can connect with fans from all different franchises and mediums, regardless of the production company, copyright holder, etc. All Disney All The Time just strike me as a bit excessive -- but I'm curious to hear more about your experience!
