Six Flags going to Dubai, too

March 4, 2008, 1:35 PM · Last week, Busch. This week, Six Flags.

Following last week's announcement of a mega SeaWorld/Busch Gardens resort in Dubai, Six Flags has announced that it will expand to the Arabian peninsula.

Six Flags is partnering with Tatweer, the developer of Universal Studios Dubailand. Tatweer will build Six Flags Dubailand under license from the U.S. amusement park firm. Here's the press release.

Someday fuel reserves will run out, & I can imagine that Dubai is the peninsulas guarantee that the wealthy there will remain so. I just hope that there is another way to get them there other than Jet engines once that happens. Or else Dubai will be the most immense ghost town/Post Apocalyptic landscape mankind has ever left behind.
Imagine what SF will have to do stateside to pay the morgage on this. Yikes!

I live near Six Flags Magic Mountain and I hate myself!

I'm going to do a vote of the week on Friday addressing the Dubai issue. There's more to this than just a bunch of theme parks going up.

March 5, 2008 at 12:00 PM · Yes. It does seem a little strange that everyone's rushing to build a park in Dubai. I mean, that's great and all, but.. I don't know. I'd like someone to point out the pros that outweigh the cons.
March 5, 2008 at 7:05 PM · This is surprising, considering the way Six Flags has expressed an interest in reducing capital spending stateside. But for an area that can make an indoor ski mountain work, nothing is out of the question.

I guess now it will be a good long while before SF Over Georgia will get any major new rides.

BTW, the Discovery Channel has dedicated entire shows to new development in Dubai and specifically all the man made islands shaped like palm trees, etc. Quite interesting.

March 6, 2008 at 8:41 AM · What I find amazing is that alot of people can not read. Six Flags sold a brand license to Tatweer so there is no capital cost outlay. Six Flags actualy made money and will not lose a dime. As for Dubai, it is a great thing that the goverment is spending billions of dollars on tourism and infrastructure.

March 7, 2008 at 1:31 PM · As an ex British serviceman and human-being, I have more ambition to eat wasps than ever consider visiting a real, proposed or dreamed of hat-stand notion of 'entertainment' as detailed here.
Praise be to freedom...

OMG. Talk about wackos....

March 8, 2008 at 12:57 PM · Ok lets face facts. USA - Florida - Biggest US tourist destination for brits, a market worth millions of $$$$'s! Over the last 4 years the number of brits travelling to the usa has gone down and down and down (why? many reasons including the fact my last trip took me 2 hours to get through immigration. Now i love the USA but why should i have to go through this?). Dubai's oil reserves are running out, it's a common know fact so they are building a tourist destination for when there is no oil left in Dubai. Now remember there is a whole big world outside of the USA who are willing to go to Dubai. Prehaps the guys at Busch and Universal know that the americans will continue to go to the american parks and this is a great opportunity for these businesses to hit a destination which WILL (i can promise) be massive!
March 9, 2008 at 1:14 AM · Having read all the hoopla about Busch and Sick Flags planning to do parks in Dubai, I just have one simple question (rhetorical or nonsensical though it may be).

What did Dubai ever do to us to deserve either one?

Happy travels.
