A Star Wars-themed, Pokemon Go-style game - that costs $500 to play

August 2, 2016, 2:20 PM · If you've been waiting for the big theme parks to one-up Pokemon Go by developing their own, themed, in-park augmented reality games, we have good news!

Well, maybe.

Disney has announced a new Star Wars-themed augmented reality game, Star Wars Rebels Interactive Adventure. The game takes players from their hotel rooms into the Star Tours: The Adventures Continue attractions at Disneyland and Disney's Hollywood Studios at the Walt Disney World Resort, where they will use their game smartphone app to look for "hidden information and gear needed to complete your mission." Players will be disguised as Imperial Security Officers as they work to complete their assigned mission for the Rebellion.

From Disney's description:

Through augmented reality on their smartphone, Ezra Bridger (from the hit TV series, Star Wars Rebels) guides them on an undercover mission. Slipping on the included Imperial Security Officer disguise, they'll head to Star Tours-The Adventures Continue attraction where hidden data they're carrying will be transmitted in hyperspace. Once the mission's completed, they'll be directed to their resort room to unlock a mysterious box holding a rebel medal of honor.

And when we say that players will be disguised, we mean that literally. You see, the Star Wars Rebels Interactive Adventure isn't a free app that anyone can download to play in the designated Disney theme parks. It's a merchandise package that goes on sale August 15 from Disney Floral and Gifts. The package includes that Imperial Officer disguise, mission gear such as a lightsaber, and a rebel medallion, packaged in commemorative rebel lock box.

The cost? $499 — delivered to your resort hotel room at Walt Disney World or Disneyland. Park admission also is required and not included.

August 2, 2016 at 4:04 PM · Uh... isn't there a Phineas and Ferb thing at Epcot and a card game at Magic Kingdom that is almost exactly the same concept... but included with park admission? And giving gaddgets? I mean, I guess i guess the gift box is nice, but...

And the disguise is just a hat, satchel, and lanyard? http://disneyworld.disneyfloralandgifts.com/product/imperial+security+officer+disguise.do?sortby=ourPicks&refType=1#

Oh my, oh my.

August 3, 2016 at 7:09 AM · Hopefully they will bring out a more accessible version of this, just imagine going on holiday with two kids and having to shell out $1000 for them to partake.

August 5, 2016 at 3:32 PM · I hope that includes admission to Disney's half open theme park construction zone MGM/ Disney Studios/ what do you call a park with just Star Wars and a few Toy Story off the shelf carnival rides that you won't notice because you are the size of toy. Sid please put me on a firework now!
