Disney unveils its Guardians of the Galaxy roller coaster trains

September 12, 2019, 4:43 PM · Walt Disney World is showing off the ride vehicles for its upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind roller coaster at Epcot.

These are no ordinary roller coaster trains. Employing some of the same technology used on Disney's Omnimover ride system, these "Omni-Coaster" ride vehicles will rotate as they travel along the roller coaster track, allowing riders more direct views of the action along this narrative-driven "story coaster."

The closest comparison with another ride would be Universal's Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, which also uses rotating coaster trains. However, the tech is different on that ride, and the coaster elements are not as extreme as they promise to be on Guardians, which will feel at times much more like a coaster with dark ride elements than a dark ride with a coaster element or two. (In that sense, Guardians will feel more like Hagrid's than Gringotts, if you are into Potter ride comparisons.)

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is under construction in (and behind) the old Universe of Energy pavilion in Epcot's soon-to-be World Discovery area. There's still no opening date announced.
