Universal sets opening date for Hollywood Drift
Universal Studios Hollywood's new Fast & Furious roller coaster has its official opening date.
Fast & Furious Hollywood Drift has been in technical rehearsals and previews for the past month, but the coaster will open officially to all park visitors starting September 16.
In case you were wondering, autumn starts on September 22 this year, so Universal juuust made that promised "summer" opening.
The first-of-its-kind Intamin coaster features trains of four cars styles as street racers from the Fast film franchise. Each car spins in a programmed maneuvers to simulate drifting in a high-speed street race. And this one takes place on the Universal City hillside overlooking California's San Fernando Valley.
That setting has created a bit of a problem for the coaster, as local residents complained about its noise during testing. That led Universal to install even more sound barriers around the ride. That work should be completed in time for the official ride debut.
With a top speed of 72 mph, this will be Universal's fastest roller coaster in the world. A second installation of Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift is now under construction at Universal Studios Florida in Orlando. That one will feature and different track design and is looking at an opening sometime next spring, according to our sources. No official opening for that one, yet.
