The pre-show is the star in Disney's new studio show
How do you create an engaging attraction from an animated short guests can watch anytime on Disney+? You make it come alive.
Once Upon A Studio, the Emmy-award winning animated short celebrating 100 years of Disney Animation, was used as inspiration for The Magic of Disney Animation area at Hollywood Studios. Animated characters hop out of their films and drawings and into our world.
That same principle applies to this screening of Once Upon a Studio. The short plays inside a dedicated theater within The Magic of Disney Animation. During portions of the film, animated portraits on both sides of the screen come to life, rushing to be in Mickey’s group photo, adding an extra layer of interaction as well as easter eggs for the repeat viewers to spot.
Once Upon A Studio is worthy of its praise – it hits all the emotional and comedic beats without any fat to trim. But the real treat is actually in the pre-show.
Here, portraits of characters come to life on the wall with PhotoPass opportunities and interactive games. Guests can inflate balloons with Baymax or rock the boat with the Kakamora from “Moana.” After completing the tasks, guests can then strike a pose and get a picture taken with the animated characters. The games also have an element of replay-ability with a scoring system.
This pre-show room will surely be a hit for kids – the waiting doesn’t feel like waiting, and if you’ve already seen Once Upon A Studio, it might be better than the theater experience itself.
Once Upon A Studio will offer guests the perfect gateway to The Magic of Disney Animation experience, which opens September 14.
