Theme Park Apprentice: Challenge 7

Redesign an Island!

From Tim W

Welcome to Challenge 7: Themed Island, of TPI Apprentice. We will have our top 3 compete during this round as yet another will be fired.

In this challenge, we are using our time machines and jumping 5 years into the future. It is now 2015, and Disney fully acquires everything related to Marvel and wants to make rides based on the superheros. In doing so, Universal is forced to close and redesign their Marvel Superhero Island. It is your job to create a new themed island, that would go well in Islands of Adventure.

Stay away, from superheros. I don't want you taking another comic book company to make rides out of. Don't say Universal acquired time warner, warner brothers, and therefore DC comics creating a DC Superhero Island! You may choose to destroy the whole island with its rides, or retheme some of the existing rides. But everything Marvel themed must go!

More details below...

So its your job to replace this island with new rides, experiences, and a brand new theme that could realistically be acquired by Universal to use. Keep in mind, Universal makes use of movies and other media/entertainment at this park. It may be best to take a movie or a few and turn them into a themed land.

Make sure to include: The name and theme for the new island, the names for at least 2 shops, the name for a quick service restaurant, the name for a sit down restaurant, at least 1 roller coaster (you may use the hulk coaster with a new theme), at least 3 other attractions must be in this section as well (this can include dark rides, simulators, films, live shows, midway rides, etc). Just the name of the rides, will probably not get you very far in this round. You should at least include a brief description and the type of ride.

Alright, well i hate to say it, but Mr. Wok Creative, you are fired. Our top 3 in the competition will be Amanda, Anthony, and Nick. Only 2 of them will move to the finale, where they will create a their very own theme park! It should be an exciting race to the finale. Please try and post by saturday.

The goal is to have our finale challenge start by next week monday. And our first ever winner will be announced on June 8, 2010! Given that it may take a few days for our past contestants to return their vote, the date is succeptable to change. As for version 2, i think i finally decided on a central theme! It will be revealed at the finale, along with a possible change in the format.

Tim, one request for Season 2. Please continue your efforts to keep the challenges "generic" and not subtly based on a Disney park. I love the Disney parks I've been to, but I can only afford to go about every decade, and I'm much more familiar with Cedar Point, King's Island and the former Geauga Lake. There are many TPIers whose park experiences center on Busch parks, Six Flags, Cedar Fair parks, and even small local one-park operations. As a possible contestant ("Me! Me! Pick me!!!) I would appreciate keeping the challenges as open to interpretation as possible. You've done a great job with this contest, and I do appreciate the time and imagination you put into it.

^Without a doubt the challenges won't solely focus on a disney park. Next competition's theme works great in my opinion, and still keeps the theming generic! I think it will be enjoyable, while possibly adding in a new twist!

Next edition, could we have a challenge about a nighttime show (one that's not strictly fireworks, like Fantasmic), but could still include fireworks if we so desired.

From Tim W
Posted May 25, 2010 at 5:01 PM
Already working on that Adam! In next competition, there won't be generic challenges where you can place a ride or show at any theme park. They will all have a story, and the nighttime show will be one of them.

I am off to Disneyland on Friday for the weekend so consider this my early entry:

I am going to take the assumption that Universal really likes their basic ride features in this part of the park so many things with be rethemed. So………

Universal Monster Island

While there are thrills at IOA, where are the chills? Coming from the depths of the lagoon comes Universal Monster Island, a land that is both frightful and delightful. Come and challenge some of the greatest monsters that have ever graced the screen!

Rides: Creature from the Black Lagoon Roller Coaster (Hulk Coaster with Jungle Themes and a Creature animatronics)- The Creature has you in his grips and will not let you go! Old “tube” of Hulk will now look like a whirling vertex of water!

Whirling Wolfman Spin (Strom Accelerator attraction)- Search for the Wolfman in this new “spin” on the attraction with fog and lighting effects

Thrill Fall with the Phantom of the Opera (Dr. Doom’s Fearfall)- Will you survive your encounter with the Phantom as he send you shooting after every burst of his organ?

And, of course, Castle Dracula with Van Helsing (Adventures of Spiderman) in which we will run into Dracula, his brides, Frankenstein, and Mr. Hyde to name a few and try to help Van Helsing defeat those who go bump in the night!

Bringing an old Universal Classic to the Island: Beatlejuice’s Graveyard Review!

Shops: Castle Treasures (A high end shop with art, armor, and jewelry inspired by the time period)

The Laboratory (General Monster souvenirs such as stuffed animals, t-shirts, and books)

Restaurants: Jeckel and Hyde Club (the popular chain will bring their spookiness to Universal Monster Island along with some new surprises in an interactive dinner)

Monster Mash (Counter Service Restaurant that will serve items such as Blood Orange Juice, Monster Mashed Potatoes, and Bride of Frankenstein Cake)

Of course, there will be many characters to meet including Dracula, the Phantom of the Opera, the Wolfman, and Frankenstein to name a few so come on down to Island of Adventure at Universal Orlando! We are sure to scare you silly!

From Tim W
Posted May 26, 2010 at 3:38 PM
Wow Anthony! I liked that you used the current rides, a great money and time saver! Plus, the Jeckyl and Hyde Club is one of the coolest restaurants in NYC! I'd love to see it there.

If Mummy: The Ride wasn;'t already built it would have worked excellent here! But still great work Anthony. And on of my choices for the retheme as well!

Note to Nick and Amanda: If this was your idea, try to make it sound as different as possible. Or even try finding a new theme. On a previous thread, "What IOA Islands Would You Like to See?", we discussed this horror island, along with an action/james bond island, and a scifi island where rides from the Matrix, Transformers, Star Trek, and even Avatar could be created. Just some ideas, if you need them. I'm hoping your ideas are all different, and don't run into any problems with your theme being stolen.

Next Week, Our final two will battle it out in the finale challenge by creating a theme park. I will announce the theme for the 2nd competeiton. And people may begin signing up on that thread.

Finally, a reminder to our past contestants that you will be voting on the winner. Please send me an email of your choice for the winner, instead of posting it on the thread.

From Amanda Jenkins

Anthony and I think so much alike! I had to rethink everything and ditch my "horror" island.

Sci-fi Island: An island dedicated to all things Science Fiction.

Shops:

The Unknown: A shop dedicated to collectibles of classic science fiction movies and series.

Space Suits: Clothing and other sci-fi apparel. Also would find basic key chains, mugs, and other souvenirs.

Restaurants:

Among the Stars: A table service restaurant that is always "among" the stars. The ceiling and walls would have a projection of the stars, meteors, and occasional planet/moon. Menu items would include your favorites of the surf and turf variety.

It Came From Outer Space Diner: This quick service diner would be shaped on the outside like the old UFOs from the 1950's movies. Inside would feature large screens showing black and white classic Science Fiction Movies in whole. Screens would be set so that anyone can watch from all viewpoints. Many would be on the cheesy side, such as "Teenagers from Outer Space," "Beginning of the End," and "It Came from Outer Space." Our menu would include items such as Grilled Mutant Burgers, Moon Pizza, and Radioactive Chicken.

Rides:

Deceptacons Return Coaster: Revamp the Hulk coaster to a Transformer's ride. Before you board, you get a message from Megatron. "Puny insignificant animals. I will destroy you all! There is no one to save you..." Optimus Prime interrupts him, "Over my smoldering transmission! Autobots...Roll Out!" Then you board the ride. As you are going through the tunnel, flashes of the fight amongst the Autobots and Deceptacons show about you. You are racing for your life in hopes that you can escape with the Autobots help.

Star Trek: Kirk's Mission

In lining up with the latest Star Trek movie, this simulation takes you on a mission that you were not supposed to be on. Captain Kirk has once again disobeyed orders and has decided to enter into a battle with the Klingons. As systems fail and Kirk goes against the odds, you do your best to stay buckled at your station. Will the Enterprise escape the victor or will this be Kirk's last mission?

Back to the Future Again: Revamp The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman to Back to the Future Movies. Doc Brown has yet again let his old Delorean be stolen by thieves. Lucky for us, he has made a new time machine that has yet to be tested. This 3-D adventure would take us through different time periods such as the classic Back to the Future ride did as we race to catch the thieves before they change the present and future forever.

Futurama's Zap Brannigan's How to Be A Space Captain 3-D show: That most famous of all Space Captains is now training new recruits on how to one day become as magnificent a space captain as he. With the help of Kiff, Zap begins to show what makes a Captain stand out. From the velour of his uniform to dating hot alien babes, this comical show will be one that you will be demoted for missing. Along with many special effects, there will also be an actual kilbot that will roll out to demonstrate his victory during the Robot Wars. For those who can't remember, in Zap's own words, "I sent wave after wave of my own men." Kilbots do have a kill limit. Things will of course go terribly wrong and poor Lieutenant Kiff Croaker will be blamed.

Extras:

Among the rides, there would be people dressed up in the old uniforms of space men from the early sci-fi movies that would interact with guests. Many would be on missions needing help from anyone able to.

Close by the Transformer's coaster would be a full size tractor trailer and a new camaro that would be able to interact with guests by talking with the recognizable voices in place.

EDIT (again): Looks like I need to learn how to read. No further questions. Mine is similar to Amanda's, but only very partially (just the sci-fi, Star Trek, and Transformers themes are a portion of my idea). Mine will come tomorrow, its just I've been working on something....special....for this entry. :D

From Tim W

Hmm very interesting. Seems like this was a pretty tough challenge as the same theme was in everybody's mind. I even had the same themes on my mind as well. Personally, i think any of the two would be great to replace the island with. However, it may be alot longer than 5 years till there might even be a closure of the island.

Please post as soon as your done Nick, that way we can move on to our finale. So far Amanda and Anthony did an excellent job! And I'm looking forward to yours as well!

I have to share some of these ideas that I had come up with for the Horror Island that I had done in the beginning. These were my faovirtes out of my ideas.

Dark ride of the Bates Motel with some "new and different" guests. This would have both animantronics and scare actors through this creepy place. There would be some mad scientists, vampires, and werewolves as guests plus the infamous Mrs. Bates.

A dark water ride of the Creature from the Black Lagoon that would also glide through the Black Lagoon Restaurant. This table service area would serve seafood.

And finally turn the Hulk coaster into the Flight of Dracula. Shops were going to be "Earthly Remains" and "Mummy Wraps".

Sci-Fi Planet from Nick Markham on Vimeo.

=RIDES=

-Star Trek: Kirk's Vengeance (Formerly Incredible Hulk Coaster): This is a heavy revamp of Incredible Hulk Coaster. The track is black with white supports, the vehicles silver and black B&M sit-downs with a sound system; The queue is now highly themed to the interior of the U.S.S. Enterprise, the exterior of the queue matching the Enterprise as well; the last half of the ride from the high up corkscrew on is now indoors, pitch black; the launch has been refurbished by S&S to a air-launch, creating a much smoother launch; the entire track has been refurbished for a much smoother ride.

- Hellboy: Rampage (replacing Storm Force Acceleration) - This Huss Giant Frissbee (much like MaXair or Delirium, spins riders a total 100 feet into the air! While the ride is loosely themed, the queue is heavily themed including a pre-show.

- Battlestar Galactica (Formerly Doctor Doom's Freefall) - This S&S Launch Tower now has both of its towers fully enclosed! The vehicles that launch up and down are now complete with a sound system and laser guns much like a shoot-em-up dark ride. Huge screen wrap around the interior where riders can shoot Cylons displayed on the screen... at least, when they are not being launched up and down like crazy (there are short periods where the vehicle stops for riders to shoot the Cylons)

- Avatar: The Ride (Formerly Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man) - That's right! This is the popular attraction I created from three rounds ago, the one all of you loved and voted for to get me here!

- Transformers: The Fallen - This new attraction has the same layout and location as my Iron Man: The Ride, but now more heavily themed to Transformers! The exterior of the building is heavily detailed to "the cube" from the first Transformers. Once you enter a hangar area, you are greeted by Optimus Prime, warning you that Megatron is somewhere within and seeks to destroy. The giant audio-animatronic figure would be the largest in the world, standing a full 50 feet! Once riders board, the whisk past Bumblbee hitched to the tow-truck as seen in Transformers before the ride stops and reverses up the lift hill once the "route is blocked" by a large animatronic of Megatron. From there, unnerving amounts of thrill, steel, mist and fire deliver a satisfying and amazing ride.

=RESTAURANTS=

Enterprise Eatery: This Sci-Fi sit down features American food themed to the future.

Galactic Grill: This quick service grill sells grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, as well as soft drinks and other snacks!

=SHOPS=

Spock's Shop: Here you can buy all sorts of Star Trek memorabilia as well as your on-ride photos from Star Trek: Kirk's Vengeance

Hellboy's Hangout: This Hellboy themed store features T-Shirts and more from the Hellboy franchise.

Na'vi Village: Avatar merchandise may be found here and is just outside the exit of Avatar: The Ride.

Kobol Kollectors: Battlestar Galctica items are found in this shop.

Autobot Merchandise: Transformers stuff fills the shelves here as well as on-ride photos from Transformers: The Fallen.

=SHOWS=

Starfleet Academy: Here entire families can train together (yes Robert, this would be the family attraction you were looking for) to become part of the starfleet from Spock and other popular Star Trek Characters.

Sci-Fi Nighttime Spectacular- To end the day, park guests travel to the Sci-Fi Planet banks of the lake of IOA to view an incredible Sci-Fi themed show with music, water screens displays, lasers, fire and fireworks!

StarFleet Base part 1

this area is based on all of the new movies(the 2nd and maybe third movies should be out by then).

Rides:
StarFleet acadamy(Nick i have a similar idea as yours except it is like two rides/attractions.
Pre-attractions: simulations that can "train" you to fly the Enterprise.
Ride: A B&M coaster similar in layout to Hulk. It also has an aspect of Mission Space where each rider has a roll to do things. there would be six people in each train. One row. there would be a multiple stops throughout the ride where more interactive things would happen. However you are still "training" for the Enterprise.

other rides/shops/shows/restaurants that i will describe later will include:
the Untold Mission (using Spiderman tech and follows a new storyline of a conflict after the first mission), the Vulcan Experience( a unique ride/simulator that shows a Vulcans's power. It also doubles as a charity organization to "rebuild the planet"(or in this case raise money for more rides)), StarFleet Court(food), A nice Bar and Restaurant, the Gadgets and Gizmos shop, Treky store, and the StarFleet necessity shop.

Yes excellent job on the video Nick. Very very cool, and gives you a nice edge above the competetion.

From Tim W
Posted May 29, 2010 at 10:46 AM
And now for my commentary

Anthony: Great Work. Monsters would be a great addition to the area. I liked your choice of monsters, but thought that Dracula and Frankenstein should deserve their own attractions. Your Van Helsing ride was very good though, i liked the use of a current movie and never thought to put it there. I guess you are killing two birds with one stone. I really liked how you used the existing attractions and made them work to your theme. Its time effective and cost effective. Also loved the restaurants that you used, as well as bringing The Graveyard Revue here as well.

Amanda: I have to give you major credit as you had to change your theme! You did a great job at changing it last minute. Your restaurants were my favorite part. They sounded great. I liked the transformers coaster, but thought it would be more likely for them to put the in development transformers ride there instead. I felt that there was a lot of simulation and movie going on in your island. 3 simulation or 3D rides is alot for one island. But the movies chosen fit the theme of your island well!

Nick: My favorite of the week! I think the video made your island idea even more wonderful and is an excellent idea. You did an amazing job! Hellboy was an interesting choice, but not my favorite choice to have in this island. I did love how it was still very different from Amanda's and they were two independent island proposals. I liked the idea of turning star trek into a coaster. Avatar and Battlesar Galactica also worked well as replacements in this island. However as with Amanda's, I do have the idea that Transformers would be the ride that is in development. The nightime show sounds like an excellent idea and my favorite idea from your island!

the Untold Mission part of StarFleet base

Queue: The queue travels through parts of the base not regularly shown to regular people. The pre-show has an AA StarFleet person brief you on what is going on. A race of creatures known as the Borships that are similar to humans but with strange and different weapons were supposedly extinct 40 years ago. The last remaining group was supposedly wiped out in a large explosion but another group has come. They want to colonize a planet to grow but the planet they had targeted is the planet the Vulcans are trying to colonize. The Borships have a large amount of dumb crazy aliens trapped in their ship. Those aliens can destroy a whole planet or space craft. The Borships want the Vulcans to evacuate or die. You have been selected to go on a mission as back ups with Kirk, Spock, and many other Star Trek stars. After the pre-show, you board the Enterprise and find a cabin to be in. You begin the ride with a large screen in your cabin. You watch as you fly through space to the planet but when you get there the 3 Borship crafts. All 3 are perfect spheres. The first one instantly starts charging the Enterprise. The enterprise takes one shot but the Borship's craft deflects it. The Borship craft starts to have a long pole coming out towards the Enterprise. The enterprise starts to back away but a strange force suddenly jerks you towards it. Then there's another jerk and the power is turned off. all is black until the cabin door is opened and 3 StarFleet members usher you out. The aliens are rampaging the bottom sections of the Enterprise and they need to lock down the ship to Take them down.

I can't get all of it now but will get the rest later.

Thanks Tim! Hellboy was a last minute theme addition as I wanted to get as far away from Amanda's idea as possible. And also, I too considered putting the Transformers ride going into USH for a replacement of Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, but thought taking an idea already made up to be less creative! But it sounds like my secret weapon (the video) played out to be a good decision!

From Amanda Jenkins

Thanks Tim!!! I must confess that I haven't been to Universal Studios since 1998 (back when IOA was under construction) and was a little unsure about the amount of space to work with. I looked at maps and such and tried to just basically guess lol. We plan on going when the boys are a little older. In two years they will be five and eight years of age, so that will probably be the time I go. Who knows, maybe some new changes will take place by then.

I'm sorry Nick if I messed up any of your ideas, though you definitely kicked my butt by doing the video :)

From Nick Markham

Nope, you didn't "succeed" in messing up any of my ideas, as the entry I posted was even my original idea beforehand, I was just worried there couldnt be two sci-fi entries that both included a Star Trek theme.

And, that is what I made the video for of course! ;D

I'm waiting for your scenario Tim, I want some time to prepare for the big finale!

From Tim W
Posted May 30, 2010 at 5:48 AM
Well its not much of a scenario this week. Your job is to create a new theme park. This new theme park must have themed areas of the park. At least 5 must be included. They must all relate to each other in some way, meaning don't have a hodgepodge of lands at a theme park. For example don't create a park where its lands relate to Energy, Surfing, The Frontier, Pixar Movies, and Mythical Creatures. I'd like to see yuou guys try to explain that one lol.

From Tim W
Posted May 30, 2010 at 6:21 AM
I want this theme park set to the standards of Universal, Disney, and Warner Brothers (In Europe). I do not want to see a generic designed amusement park like a Six Flags. Your theme park MUST be a new theme park for an existing chain. You may wish to consider Disney World's 5th gate, Disneyland's 3rd gate, Universal Florida's 3rd gate, Busch Garden's 3rd Theme Park, or a new Seaworld as possible ideas. I will have more details tomorrow.

From Nick Markham
Posted May 30, 2010 at 8:13 AM
Oh boy, I am thinking both of us are going to choose the same location, based off of how he loves to base his rides at a certain resort...we'll just have to see...

EDIT: So if we had something like Islands of Adventure, where there are totally different themes but they are all connected as islands, this i something you don't want us to do, or would that be something okay, as long as there is something linking the ideas together?

From Tim W
Posted May 30, 2010 at 8:29 AM
I mean for IOA, the central theme is adventure. They all sort of relate, but then theres themes that aren't quite fitting in the park. I'm gonna leave that up to you guys, to decide if you park plan sounds ok, or if it sounds a bit "messy".

Keep in mind, this description is tentative still and is subject to change. I really wanted to have a scenario to this one as I have with the others, so it really may change. I'm still thinking of a few ideas, but i already have the finale for the enxt competeiton in my head. I'm thinking that I may be making it a 5th theme park for Disney World, but you guys would have to reveal your themes before you post to ensure nobody's theme is taken.

the Untold MIssion part 2

YOu race down the hallways of the Enterprise when the aliens start flooding the halls. One alien jumps on a starfleet cadet near you and drags him away. Other cadets shoot at aliens but there are too many. Just when an alien grabs you and tosses you down a hallway, a large gas vapor erupts down the hallway. The aliens fall down gasping until they lie still. The air just misses you. Then a Borship, looking like a short human, walks down in a large Iron Man like suit without the head piece. Others follow. Each has a different main weapon like a large laser or a beaming sword and shield. "prisoners" a Borship says. They take and race down hallways killing aliens and cadets and taking some prisoners. Then the strange gas erupts down the hallway making everyone fall down. Spock and Kirk stand at the end of the hallway. they are awkwardly fit into undersized Borship suits. Kirk takes you to safety and Spock go off with more cadets to capture more Borships. Kirk takes you to the control room where you watch as more StarFleet ships join and help the Enterprise overcome the Borships. Just when the Borship ships are destroyed, one last borship breaks down the door and shoots the window. you fly out the window with more cadets and the borship(similar to 400 foot drop) but are caught in a beam and are brought onto a fellow StarFleet ship. The borships had lost and you go back to the StarFleet base.

I'll get the rest of the parts later.

In the finale challenge, voting will be done by the previous 6 contestants and myself for the winner. Future apprentices may sign up on that thread for the 2nd version. That version's special theme will be announced when it is posted so look out for that. Thank you all for playing TPI Apprentice so far, its been a blast running the game for all of you guys so far!

EDIT: By a slim margin of 10 votes, Nick came in 2nd to Amanda. Final Challenge should be posted today!

the Vulcan Experience:

The last attraction in the StarFleet Base would be this. THe vulcans need some help on their new planet so they decided to build something where people can donate(or not) to "help rebuild their civilization"(update attractions). In this attraction everyone sits in a wide theater with about 8 rows 20 across. YOu can see one window(screen) where six Vulcans are using their power and transmitting it into a machine to affect all in the theater. Once it starts the whole theater is instantly covered in fog. A large screen appears and shows how the original Vulcan planet was destroyed. the seats move slightly giving a mild but immersive simulator that is very lifelike.

and that's all to the island. Feedback would be great. and Tim, count me in on Season 2.
