Water Show

Hello and welcome to Water Park Apprentice Challenge 4: Water Show. In this week's challenge we have 6 contestants competing to create the best water show. 2 will be eliminated this week leaving us with our final 4 when 1 person will be eliminated each week after this challenge. I guess you could all say that you have made it past the halfway point due to dropouts and eliminations. Congratualtions on that everyone! This challenge is our first challenge to be a park specific challenge as well taking place at Islands of Adventure. And now for the challenge synopsis:

Fantasmic!, Believe, and Illuminations are some of the most notable water shows ever created. Each one is unique in their presentation, theme, and location. Over at Islands of Adventure, there is a lagoon right in the center of everything. Therefore, I ask myself, why is there no water show. The show could be seen by places from each of the islands and there is enough room for Universal to utilize this and make a water show. Therefore, in this week’s challenge, your job is to create a water show in Islands of Adventure’s lagoon. It may be a fountain show, a live show, a nighttime show, a fireworks show, a lazer show, a water parade, a combo of any of these or anything else you may think of to put there in the vacant body of water. Please include the type of show you are going to put there, the name of the show, the length, the theme, and a description of what will happen. Of course we do not need location in this challenge, so that is not neccessary to include. Make sure to be creative and have fun as always! Please post by Saturday at midnight. Late entries will be fired.

Hannah Caller has already been fired from the game. One more contestant will be fired one day after the poll is posted. Elimination will be announced in just a few hours!

Marvel’s Avenger Water Show

Story
Dr. Doom is loose and it’s up to the Avengers to stop him. The show would only show at night. It would have light effects, fireworks, and the audience would get wet. The show would start completely dark except one light on Dr. Doom. He would explain how he escaped from jail and his plan to destroy the Avengers forever. The next scene would show the Avengers at their headquarters. The Avenger team would consist of Spiderman, Thor, Hulk, and Captain America. They get a alert from their phone that Dr. Doom has escaped prison and that he’s trying to rob the biggest bank in America. The Avengers go to him but Dr. Doom is ready and pulls out a new weapon that destroys anything the beam touches. The Avengers spring into action. Thor waves his hammer around and wind picks up the water would splash at the audience and the wind would hit them. Spiderman swings in next and tries to hit Dr. Doom with his web. Dr. Doom reflects it towards the audience. The webs would be water and it would hit some people mostly the ones in the front row. The next Avenger to try and stop him is the hulk. He jumps up and slams his fist into the ground. That would cause a wave to hit the audience. Finally Captain America throws his shield at him but Dr. Doom hits it away causing it to fly over the audience. It wouldn’t hit anybody but it would scare the audience. The shield would come back to Captain America and he would discuss with his team how to beat him. When they come up with a plan Dr. Doom shoots Captain America with the beam causing lights and a couple of firecrackers to go off. Captain America would disappear and the Avengers would be shocked. Dr. Doom would laugh and start shooting the beam at the rest of the Avengers. Every time the beam would hit somewhere a firecracker would explode where the beam hit and it would look like fire. Thor would shoot lightning at Dr. Doom and it would make a huge explosion and fireworks and smoke would go off around the stage. Dr. Doom would look stunned and while he is Spiderman shoots his web at the gun and grabs the gun away from his reach. Spiderman breaks the gun and a huge explosion happens near the end of the stage when the smoke clears Captain America is there and he hits Dr. Doom with his shield. Dr. Doom stumbles towards the hulk and the hulk grabs him and throws him into the water causing a huge wave to hit the audience. Dr. Doom swims off yelling that he would be back to defeat them. The Avengers then talk to each other about the good job they did and they then walk off the stage and the show would be over. Every time some other hero would get teleported off the stage. For special occasions other hero’s might come to the rescue with the Avengers.

Hey Justin, isn't Dr.Doom with the Fantastic Four? Otherwise that sounds like a cool show but i don't think it would be favored for little girls.

So it's a live water show in similar fashion to Fantasmic!?

And now for an update-
Challenge 5: Aquatic Coaster, 4 contestants, July 13
Challenge 6: Themed Land, 3 contestants, July 20
Challenge 7: Water Park, 2 contestants, July 27

As for the finale, The site will be voting on the winner. I will not be contacting each one of you to vote this time. Its been a confusing season filled with 4 dropouts from the competition. So we will just have a poll like we do every week to determine our winner of Water Park Apprentice.

I'm going to claim all present continents, countries, planets, universes,ET civilizations and all human knowledge past, present and future.......ok, just kidding;+) I'm doing a tribute to all Universal Parks worldwide.

From Tim W

Annthony and Dan, you may want to claim your themes! Keep in mind, there are some IOA islands that are still available to be taken advantage of for themes( Seuss, Jurasic Park, Toon Lagoon). Or you may take a more original approach like James is deciding on. I'm really looking forward to this week's ideas.

From Anthony Murphy

I am doing "Adventure Awaits" which will represent every Island at IOA. It will be more like an Illuminations show so I think its different enough from others.

Interesting that the only IOA TPA challenges have had a scramble to pick up themes.

From Tim W
Posted July 7, 2010 at 7:24 PM
You may do a similar theme, just try to keep the original and no copying off of the first poster lol. And yea that is quite interesting about IOA being the only park where people have claimed their idea.

Attention Apprentices: Next week you will be leaving Orlando to visit California, and then overseas for our third and first international challenge, and back in California for the finale. As David has guessed ever so correctly before, the finale will take place in Anaheim this season. I'm already looking forward to the finale!!!

^Does it involve chocolate? ;+) Just for fun, I'd love to see how you would put Willy Wonka in the middle of IOA. I'm really just kidding- you're probably wise to wait to do the reveal. I'm still busy adding ideas, subtracting ideas, struggling for ideas, all the while meeting with my lawyer to settle both of my in-laws estates- lucky me, along with having to deal with their passing away, I get to be the executor of their estates! This competition is probably saving my sanity- it's a way to escape to someplace fun.

Adventure Awaits

In this new nighttime extravaganza, Universal brings your favorite islands to life as a good night tribute to your adventure. It will begin with Adventure Awaits song as a replica of the Lighthouse comes to the center of the lagoon surrounded by fog. Each Island will have water projections, music, and fireworks. I will break it down per island. There will be a refrain after each Island from Adventure Awaits as the lighthouse light swings around as it shines on the next island:

Marvel Super Hero Island
Music: Spiderman (cartoon and live action songs)
Screens: Footage from live action Spiderman, Hulk, and Fantastic 4 (spark effects)
Fireworks: Red, Green, and Blue

Toon Lagoon
Music: Popeye and Woody Woodpecker
Screens: Popeye, Betty Boop, Woody Woodpecker (splash effects)
Fireworks: Pink, Yellow, White

Jurassic Park
Music: John Williams’ Jurrasic Park
Screens: Trex, Raptors, etc
Fireworks: Brown, Yellow, Green

Lost Continent
Music: Bird and the Worm, Clash of the Titans, Dreamworks’ Sinbad
Screens: Clash of the Titans and Simbad
Fireworks: Blue, White

Seuss Landing
Music: One Fish Two Fish, You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch
Screens: Animated and Live Action Footage of Cat and the Hat, Grinch, and Hop on Pop
Fireworks: Red, White, Blue, Green

Wizarding World of Harry Potter
Music: Theme From Harry Potter
Screens: Scenes from the Harry Potter Movies (spark effects)
Fireworks: Red, Green, Blue, Yellow (for the house colors)

At the End, with the closing Adventure Awaits music, the top of the Lighthouse Opens and shoots out every color firework from the Islands and when the light makes one last pass on each Island, a colored firework will shoot from the highest part of the island (Hogwarts, Posiden’s Fury, Dudley Do Right, etc),

here's mine: the Kolor Killer(JK the name will be revealed below)

at 8:30 every evening at Islands of Adventure Theme Park, a mysterious fog begins to role on to the lake. By 9:20, you can't see the other side and mysterious lights begin to shine gold, purple, and blue while gentle mysterious music begins. At 9:30, the show begins:

Loudspeakers around the park start the show:
"Thousands of years ago the world was a very different place than what it is today. There were many civilizations that fought eachother for power. <***tech stuff: there would be a massive deck like in world of color for fountains. these would shoot water into the shape of armies fighting over rolling hills with hundreds of projectors adding color to make them recognizable. Kind of like a 3D world of color.***>. These ancient civilizations fought again and again never giving up. But 3 civilizations topped all the others, the Myans, the Egyptians, and Atlantians. <***tech: there will be pauses between sentences for more show of the fountains and lights***>. However, the Atlantians had a mysterious rock filled with power that made the egyptians and Myans fall to their knees. <*** Here you would see larger fountains with the Atlantians conquering***>. The Atlantains ruled the world for a period of about 100 years. Then, for their 100th aniversary of rulling the world, the decided to go one step too far. They decided to conquer the gods of every civilization. <***this would be demonstrated with fog in the sky with projections of gods on them and fountains shooting up at them***>. They started with the least powerful ones. With their mysterious rocks, they were able to defeat them. Finally they worked up so their weren't many gods left but the most powerful ones remained. the Egyptian gods, the Myan gods, and the Greek gods. The Greeks had kept to their area and not bothered with the major world wars. Now, their gods were interested. All of the remaining gods decided to come together and destroy the Atlantians once and for all. <***The clouds now would attack the moving, colored water with color, pyrotechnics, and fog***>. And so the greatest war ever began. Pleuges from Egyptian and Myan gods recked havoc throughout Atlantis. Zues struck down buildings throughout all the land. <***Posidon would be shown by a large mass of fountains in a 100' torso head and arms shape crashing into atlantis dispersing and destroying it***>. and finally, Posidon swallowed up the whole island of atlantis crushing it and sending small parts flying. The few surviving Atlantians never came out in puclic again. However, their mysterious rocks also disapeared. But one of the surviving pieces of land washed up in florida. They live here to this day at Islands of Adventure theme park. <*** here the city would just apear on fountains in their 3D form with Blue fireworks and then disapear a gold mist***>. You have witnessed, the power of ATLANTIS: THE LOST CONTINENT."

If you didn't get it, that would be the name.
considering how complicated this would be, if this doesn't make sence to you just read the storyline and let me know and i'll try to post the tech stuff with 3D water effects in a new post.

Feed back would be great!

David, very interesting concept- inventing a myth is tough, and you did a great job of it! I just don't understand the name Kolor Killer. Do I need to reread something? It would be amazing to see this show.

From David L.
Posted July 8, 2010 at 5:46 PM
oh, i was making a joke about how it would be better than the world of color. so i thought up color killer except with a k. the real name is announced at the end of the show in caps: ATLANTIS: THE LOST CONTINENT. Did everyone understand the tech stuff?

From James Koehl
Posted July 8, 2010 at 6:45 PM
Gotcha- sorry, I'm really tired. Actually I was going to call mine "ImagiNations" but I figured the Black Rat would get all "trademark infringement" nasty with me ;+) Although the tech stuff would be WAY cutting edge I understood much of what you described. It would be a challenge to make the visuals be seen clearly from multiple viewing areas around the lagoon. I don't know much about the weather in Orlando, but what would a breeze do to the fog effect? I'm really not trying to belittle your concept in any way- I think it's really original, especially the entire original myth you created.

From David L.
Posted July 9, 2010 at 8:14 AM
James, on the lake it would just be a massive version of those fog machines you can get with quiet fans gently blowing it towards the center of the lake. As for in the air, i thought about just some silent cheap aircraft with it trailing behind but that would be pretty expensive. I bet Universal Creative and a bunch of scientists can creat some chemical reaction that is eco-friendly that creats cloud type things. silent fans would have to help in general in all fog effects. this is the kind of feedback that i like, thanks!

A UNIVERSE OF ADVENTURE
(A J&S Production)

Photobucket

This will be a three-part multimedia extravaganza held every evening (weather permitting). The center of the lagoon will be occupied by a cross-shaped structure (as seen from the top)

Photobucket

with large LED screens at the end of each arm of the cross.

Photobucket

This could be a permanent structure in the lagoon, and the screens could be used during the day to make announcements, update visitors about wait times for individual attractions, and show live feeds from throughout the two parks. The screens would face Port of Call, Jurrasic Park, Toon Lagoon, and The Lost Continent.

From James Koehl
Posted July 9, 2010 at 5:15 PM
One-half hour before the start of the show, scenes would be shown on the screens that will be filmed throughout Island of Adventure that day, showing visitors enjoying the attractions. This will give people a chance to be part of the end-of-day events, to see themselves on screens like they have never seen themselves before, and perhaps encourage them to stay longer at IOA. One minute before the show starts, the screens will start a sixty-second countdown, with the music of Mannheim Steamroller building the excitement and- people being people- the crowds will undoubtedly join in the countdown.

At zero, fireworks will erupt from the top of the screens, then the entire lagoon area will go dark as, from the center of the structure, a replica of the IOA lighthouse rises up dramatically and majestically.

From James Koehl
Posted July 9, 2010 at 5:19 PM
The lighthouse will be integral to the entire production. When it reaches its final height (about forty to fifty feet) a spotlight flashes out of the lighthouse, circling and scanning the entire park.

Narrator: "Ladies and Gentlemen, fellow Adventurers, today you have experienced the Islands of Adventure, the joys of childhood, the power of the superhero, the terror of the distant past and the magic of the mind. Tonight, we salute each of these Islands."

A Salute to the Islands of Adventure

At this point, four floats enter the lagoon, each with an LED screen identical to the ones on the central structure. These floats will circle the lagoon, with the screens facing the crowds on shore. The screens on the central platform will show the logo of the Island as it is featured, while the moving screens will show scenes of attractions from the featured Island. Appropriate music would accompany each Island's presentation. After each Island is saluted, it will remain lit but will dim to allow the focus to be on the next Island.

The spotlight stops on Port of Call, and here begins the first part of the event:

"Port of Call!"

Photobucket

Lights in every window of Port of Call come on, and fireworks with an oriental appearance, spinning wheels, reds and oranges and ground-type displays of dragons illuminate this area

From James Koehl
Posted July 9, 2010 at 5:24 PM
The spotlight starts to revolve again, this time stopping on The Lost Continent.

"The Lost Continent!"

Photobucket

Lasers flash from the giant trident and balls of fire erupt from throughout the site. A projection of lava running down the side of the Mythos restaurant mountain reaches the lagoon and steam erupts from the water.

Photobucket

The spotlight revolves again to:

"Toon Lagoon!"

Photobucket

Colorful spotlights play all over the area, and large bubbles fill the air.

From James Koehl
Posted July 9, 2010 at 5:29 PM
The spotlight repeats its revolution, stopping at:

"Seuss Landing!"

Photobucket

The entire area begins to glow as each building is floodlit in brilliant colors. A brief, colorful fireworks display provides enough smoke for a Cat in the Hat laser projection to be shown on the smoke over the Island.

"The Wizarding World of Harry Potter"

Photobucket

Lighting effects make Hogwarts Castle look like magic has run amok, with the windows flashing like a major magical battle is occuring inside and evil forces are trying to attack from the outside

"Marvel Comics Hero Island"

Photobucket

Spotlights burst from all over this Island, with tracer lights running around the buildings.

"Jurassic Park"

Bursts of fire erupt from around the Discovery Center, with the sound of roaring dinosaurs adding to the drama.
The floats move to join the central platform, forming an eight-sided LED screen

The lights dim on all the Islands and the central platform screens, with only the Lighthouse remaining lit as the next section of the production begins:

Narrator: "Universal Studios is known world-wide as a leader in cutting-edge entertainment. Join us as we visit the Universal Studios around the world, each unique yet each sharing one goal of bringing fun, entertainment and excitement to our friends everywhere.
First, Universal Studios Hollywood!"

"Hooray for Hollywood!" starts to play as the Universal Studios Hollywood logo appears on the four original central platform LED screens

"The entire Universal family is dedicated to continuing this tradition of celebrating the joy of life, of sharing mankind's love of adventure, and of inspiring young and old to reach new heights of imagination. The worldwide family of Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure is just the begining!"

Coming soon.....

From Tim W

Nice James! We await to hear Joshua's and Dan's ideas tomorrow!

Next weeks challenge will be aquatic themed coaster. Heres a look as to what expect:

It is an odd thing when the original SeaWorld park does not have any coasters, while its two siblings have two each. At SeaWorld San Antonio, there is the Great White and Steel Eel. In addition, at Orlando, there is Kraken and Manta. However, the park in San Diego does not have a single coaster, besides a log flume. This week, it is your job to create an aquatic themed coaster for SeaWorld San Diego. The SeaWorld coaster normally has some name referring to an aquatic animal, so keep that in mind. It may be of another theme however related to water such as water sports or beach themed. Make sure to include the name of the coaster, the theming, the placement in the park, special effects used, and any coaster extras (loops, corkscrews, etc).

Remember only one person will get cut next week from our final four. I can only wonder who they will be!

I would like to point out that James and my ideas were created without knowing each others.

Maybe this proves a point about what IOA or Universal is missing: Spark of Imagination since everybody's is very similar. It looks like James and I went for the Illuminations/World of Color and came up with the same central item. I really dodged a bullet on part of it James since I was thinking about making the land's "weenies" do something, especially Posiden's Trident, but I could only think of Potter, Jurassic Park, and the Lost Continent to put special effects. The rest really do not have a central area!

From James Koehl
Posted July 10, 2010 at 3:04 AM
Anthony, thanks for your mentioning about our ideas being developed independently. I had mine all written up and Scott was working on the pics when Anthony posted his proposal, and I just about freaked! I wrote both Tim and Anthony about what to do, and both of them gave me their approval to proceed. You are gentlemen and good sports.
Remember back in the '70s (of course you don't- you're all too young!) two books were published by two different authors and two different publishers, both about a skyscraper catching fire with hundreds of people trapped on the top? One was called "The Blazing Inferno" and the other was "The Tower." It was decided to make a movie by combining the best of both books, and "The Towering Inferno" was the result.

The Lost Adventure

Photobucket

Story: The ominous and lonely mountain in the middle of the lagoon lays dormant waiting for the time to strike! Why is that? Well when the other adventures decided to unite and make bridges and connect with each other they decided that the mountain was to dangerous and small to be included and so didn’t include him into the mix.

Well the mountain has been waiting, brewing, and biding its time for the right moment and unleash its fury on the other adventures and there inhabitants and guests. After 20 years its time!

Stage: During the day in the middle of the lagoon a mountain can been scene from every land at IOA. It looks docile, green and luscious and even inviting to guests who may want to visit it. As soon as night hits it becomes looks and becomes angry and starts to smoke.

Show:
Start: The start of the show starts with light and whimsical music with string instruments and flutes. Each land is bright and lit-up. This is a peaceful time using a lot of blue, green, and bright fireworks. Each land will shoot out flare type fireworks including other fireworks that will be unique to each land. For example Harry Potter music will start up and fireworks will look like wands and brooms, Marvel Island music will play and the Fantastic 4 and X-Man symbols can be scene, Suess Landing and the Cat and the Hat hat’s can be scene etc…The lands or adventures are in a state of peace and unity.

And then all hell breaks loose!

Photobucket

Drums and brass instruments breaks in and disrupts the peace that is occurring between the Adventure. The mountain is revealed to be a volcano! The top erupts with fire and fireworks and the other lands get dark. The fireworks will change to deep red and orange. The volcano will then release its minions on the other Adventures.

These minions will look like they are walking on water and coming towards you which they will! The minions will walk on hidden stages throughout the lagoon and will come close to guests. The minions have also special abilities in which they can control the elements. They will walk towards you shooting fire, control the water in the lagoon and making the wind howl and shriek and blow right at you!

This will be the most complex and I believe interesting part of the show. There is a lot going on the many many minion’s walking on water, the fireworks in the sky, and the volcano erupting with fire.

False Finale: Then the Adventures unite again and start to fight back. They shoot flares and other type fireworks at the volcano. The minion retreat and the volcano explodes with fire, and a lot of sparkly type fireworks. The whole park gets quite and dark and really eerie feeling occurs.

Finale: There is a deep rumbling sound that is heard and felt at all the Adventures and the volcano erupts again! But instead of fire and brimstone coming out there will be sparks, sparkles, and flares emitting from the volcano. The other Adventures also add there own fireworks to the mix and then the mountain and water in the lagoon becomes tame and the Adventure are at peace once again.

But for how long…

Dan, very exciting show! It reminds me of an Olympic-type opening ceremony, esp. the "minions" emerging from the volcano and approaching/interacting with the audience. (but where was the chocolate? ;+)

I am giving Joshua until Monday as I know he is sick. Id hate to have another person drop out of the competition! However, after monday, the poll will have to be posted and we must move on.

Well if I wanted to add chocolate and make it into a Wonka themed water show. It could be like this:

The mountain is Wonka's fabled "Fudge Mountain". Every nce in awhile Wonka, because of the amount of chocolate he uses, needs to add more to his "Chocolate River". So he has the mountain erupts to naturally mix the chocolate into the Lagoon which is connected to his river.

I got word from Joshua that he will try to post tonight, and if he doesn't, he told me to fire him and move on with the competition. I'm hoping he does post however! So the poll will be submitted sometime tomorrow morning.

I'm not sure if this was my favorite week for the competition. I may sound a bit critical in my commentary, but I hope you see where I was coming from. Alright well lets begin with some commentary as I am unsure of Joshua's position in the game:

Justin- very descriptive but parts through me off. Dr. Doom is a nemesis of the Fantastic 4, not the avengers. The other thing is that this show would be highly unlikely as Disney owns Marvel. I doubt Universal wants to invest any more money into Marvel.

Anthony- I thought the idea was classic, simple, and could easily rival Illuminations. Very nice tribute for the Islands! Sounded a bit limp on a story, however. The show remained a tribute, and that was pretty much it.

David- Very very risky creating your own myth, but it was very good. The story sounds very mysterious, but powerful. However, it was original and sounded very advanced with the tech stuff. Sounds like it would take a lot of work to develop something of this nature.

James- I know you encountered difficulties, but you managed to differentiate your idea from anthony's as much as possible. Another good tribute, but i thought yours might have gotten a bit off track when you decided to address different parks. The latter part of the show sounded more like a promotion of what to come in other parks. I'm not sure many people would care about the Asian parks. Very good use of those screens, they seemed revolutionary and would be great for the park!

Dan- My favorite of the week. Your idea was original, included the individual islands, was soooo much more than just a tribute, and had a great story. The idea was amazing and is probably my favorite of any of your ideas so far, in both competitions. I thought the idea of another island that was neglected was genius. Excellent work Dan!

Great work. Unfortunately, I'm just not feeling up to posting mine. I will tell you that the entire crowd of honorary muggles circling the lagoon would be divided into sections based on the Sorting Hat's intentions (e.g., "Hmmm... This section came to the park early, attacked with a battle plan, and lined up for this show an hour before it started! You must be... Ravenclaws!) Think of the Sorting Hat as a pre-show.

Also, one volunteer from each of the four houses would be chosen for the show. The four would compete in a Triwizard Cup-esque competition, complete with dragons, mermaids, and various other crazy crap.

Well, that's all the energy I have. Thanks for letting me come this far. I respectfully forfeit.

Tim, good evaluations, as always. I understand your concerns about the international part of my presentation, but I hoped that the inclusion of the parade of boats from each park's countries would give it more of a pagent feel and less of a travelogue look. I suggested to Scott to include pics of the ships in the presentation, but he was worried that it was already too long (probably correct there- if I go on I will try to control my "creative juices" and keep my presentation shorter than the Old Testament!).

Joshua- hope you're feeling better soon. Your concept sounded amazing and enjoyable.

Commentary:
Justin: Besides the Fantastic Four-Avenger mixup, it sounded like a decent show. More avengers would be good but little girls would probably not enjoy it at all because it sound like the cartoons.
Anthony: simple and great. while lacking a story, it would still be a major crowd pleaser. my favorite.
James: I thought this would be a great show, until you added the other universal parks tribute. All that seemed to be was filler stuff to make it longer. Theme park geeks like us might enjoy it but typical tourists would say,"ooo, cool screen. now do something more interesting".
Dan: This sounds like a great show but it seems a little short. But i'd love to see it happen.
anymore feedback in mine would be great!

I voted for James' entry but the poll number did not go up.... anyone know the reason as to why not?

Elimination will occur tomorrow, and challenge 5 will begin. Looks like there is a 3 way tie currently! Remember with Dan being my favorite, he is granted immunity this week.

I will be firing someone at around 1 pm ET. As of right now, the vote is extremely close! Nearly a 5 way tie. If that so happens to be the case in a few more hours, I will be deciding solely who is going to be fired.
