I have a couple friends moving to Shanghai for grad school, and a visit to them is just a cover for visiting Shanghai Disneyland! What is the best time of year to visit the resort?

I was just there the 25th and 26th of June, a Sunday and Monday. The crowds on Sunday weren't too bad but the Monday crowd was ridiculous. There was an announcement over the PA outside the gates saying there were no more tickets available for that day. This was 30 mins after park opening. And there was about an hour long wait just to get through the security bag check.
So I would definitely plan ahead as much as possible and buy your tickets in advance online as same day tickets may be sold out on the day you go. I don't think the park has been operating long enough to get the necessary data needed to compile an accurate crowd calendar. But considering that most of the rides are copies, you only need to worry about a few unique rides. Plus they have paper Fastpasses which is great for Disney veterans.
Whatever you do, don't miss Pirates. Mind. Blown.
