Demolition of current attractions and Mythos re-theming look to be scheduled for the re-brand of the once icons land.
Can't wait to hear what IP they are going to use. I don't think it's going to be Artemis Fowl, however. (chuckle)
I know nobody wants IP, but I have yet to hear a pitch that would be a feasible fit for the park. If you ask me, a shrieking shack stage show/mount crumpet launched ART engineering coaster joint expansion would be perfect for the area and provide a necessary refresh to Seuss Landing.
The popular rumor has always been Legend of Zelda, and to me that makes a lot of sense. However, I could also see them pivoting to do Wicked in this spot, especially if they want to get that into the resort sooner rather than later. I'd be a bit surprised if it wound up being something other than those two IPs, but stranger things have definitely happened.
I think the most interesting development is that Universal is tearing down the former Poseidon's Fury attraction building. To me, that means UC is serious about giving this area a complete refresh and don't want the new IP to be restrained by previous structures and boundaries. When Universal built the first WWoHP, they reutilized a significant amount of original IOA infrastructure including Dueling Dragons (became Dragon Challenge), Flying Unicorn (became Flight of the Hippogriff), and Enchanted Oak (became Three Broomsticks). The fact that Universal appears to be wiping the Lost Continent slate clean (aside from Mythos) instead of making compromises with the new IP (whatever that may be) to conform to any original structures or theming that is simply reskinned or contorted to fit the new IP.
I think the fact that Universal is clearly spending some serious money on this (something Disney is NOT doing over at DAK with Dinosaur/Indy and other recent announcements), which indicates to me the IP that will be used must be pretty big.
So Disney is "NOT" spending "serious money" on the additions to DAK?
Gotta agree with TH here. While we don't know the contents of the new land replacing Lost Continent, it's unlikely that it even could have worked in PF's building. It's clear that Universal is trying to keep as much existing infrastructure intact, because Mythos is only going to be rethemed.
Meanwhile, Tropical Americas is going to have three rides, and two of them are going to be built from the ground up. I don't know how many of the shops and restaurants are going to be reused, but it's definitely hard to say that either expansion is anything less than a significant investment.
I'm not saying that Disney is not spending "serious money" on the DAK improvements, but they are cutting some costs by reusing the entirety of Dinosaur for the Indy retheme and the Bugs theater for Zootopia. While I do feel that Indy is a good fit for the new Tropical America's theme, it's a bit of a cop out, and while WDI has said that the new attraction will be different from Disneyland's, there is little doubt in my mind that the 2 rides will be extremely similar.
Overall, I was merely pointing out the choice that Universal has made to tear down all of the remnants of Lost Continent (aside from Mythos, which there are conflicting rumors about the future of the iconic restaurant) instead of trying to integrate existing buildings and structures into the new land in order to save some money. In my view, this shows commitment from Universal to whatever IP has been selected to replace Lost Continent and an encouraging sign given that Universal has a history of repurposing buildings and structures (including the possibility of reusing pads, footers, and buildings for whatever is replacing RRR).
Russell writes: "Universal is clearly spending some serious money on this (something Disney is NOT doing over at DAK ...")
And then Russell writes: "I'm not saying that Disney is not spending "serious money" on the DAK improvements ..."
Me: It's literally, exactly what you wrote. The word "NOT" actually appears in all caps.
Please for the love of god no more IP. Lost Continent was one of the few things Universal has ever done that was not IP and not ironically was one of the best things they've ever done (in reference to Dragons, Poseidon, and Mythos).
