From Mexicali to Disneyland II: Back for the 50th

Disneyland: A trip of 227 miles from Mexicali to DL to see with our own eyes that "the magic is back" at the original theme park.

Saturday, November 12th, 2005.
After a four-hour-plus drive to Disneyland, I found a very different theme park from what I had experienced last december. For me, the 50th anniversary surely has made the Magic to "come back" to the park, and though it was one of the most crowded times that I remember (a third Fantasmic! was added and Space Mountain Fast Passes were running fast likely selling out by noon or even before!), that didn’t stopped us from having a great time.

However, we managed to have the "basic package" by riding all the classic attractions and even repeating Space Mtn and Indiana Jones (truly the two best rides at the park).
We went into the Astro Blasters too, but though it seemed better than the Orlando version, it really is no competition to the return of Space Mountain.

My friends and I have a rule about good rides and great rides, being a single little tear after the ride the whole difference. Well, with Space Mtn, it could have been the 8 year long wait or the feeling of a faster ride, but at the end I had multiple tears on my eyes, which by itself was worth the trip and the ticket!

The only bad moment was that we couldn't get a good place to see "Remember...Dreams Come True" (we had a decent one, but by trying to get a better one we kept walking in circles and ended very far away, closer to the Emporium than to Central Plaza). Nevertheless, the fireworks were great, yet I must admit that the king of the nightime is still Fantasmic!..... now, if some day they could mix Fantasmic! and "Remember...", that should be a different whole story....

All in all, it was an extra crowded saturday, but we managed to ride Space Mountain, Indiana Jones, Big Thunder and Splash Mountain with fastpasses to keep short waiting times.

For Pirates of the Caribbean, Small World, Jungle Cruise, Star Tours, Astro Blasters, Enchanted Tiki Room and Honey, I shrunk the Audience, we had waits from 5 to 30 minutes.

Only Haunted Mansion Holiday took longer than posted (55 mins instead of 45) and the "reprise" of Space Mountain in the night was long but shorter than expected (65 mins instead of the 105 posted).

We even had a chance to enter the Disney Gallery as well as The 50 years exhibition and movie (which I highly recommend as it is a very moving show for all true Disneyland fans). The model of the 1955 Disneyland in the lobby is awesome!.

You know that a place is magical when no matter the crowds, you can manage to ride and see everything you want and still have time to relax a little and enjoy the details. If only the prices were not as higher as they currently are... but still is less expensive than any Orlando park and the experience in the end is “priceless”.

Anyway, Disneyland is back in the first place of my theme park Top 10.... Islands of Adventure "ruled" only for 18 months, but it could be back anytime when they add new attractions, but for now, Disneyland (the original), if I may say, is back in business as the grand daddy of all the theme parks of the world.

Nice to hear you had a good time even with the crowds. It's always been hard for me to do so.

I suppose that crowds will be getting heavier as the holidays get closer. My friends and I are planing a trip for december 10th, and although I might know the answer ("mega-crowded"), I still would like to ask anybody out there in the website who may know an estimate of the crowds by that day so we can decide if we just go to DL or if we get a 1 day park hopper that day (a little bit risky, since I believe that the parks are reaching capacity with the 50th anniversary more often). Last year we managed to do it in 1 day on december 30th, but there was no anniversary and no Space Mountain. Any hint would be appreciated.

Well December 10 is a Saturday so expect big crowds, however it is not near Christmas so it won't be nearly as busy as it would be if you went there on Crhistmas Day.
