Yesterpark

Construct a Park made up of only retired rides.

I got to thinking while reading Sheldon's thread about closures at USH. It made me reminisce about some of the attractions and rides that have been retired over the years. There's a few that I do miss and would love to ride again.

So I thought it might be fun to try to construst a Park made up entirely of attractions and rides that no longer exist.

Rides like Back to the Future and the Skyway Trams or Mike Fink's keelboats. All good. All sadly gone

Let's try to build a YesterPark. There may not be enough to get a truly balanced one but we may be surprised at what we come up with.

I got a ton.

Horizons, The World of Motion and the original Journey into Imagination at Epcot.

20,000 Leagues under the Sea and Alien Encounter at the Magic Kingdom.

King Kong at Universal Orlando.

Kingdom of the Dinosaurs at Knott's.

Haunted River at King's Dominion.

I like this:

YesterPark

Coasters

Drachen Fire (Busch Gardens Europe)
Hypersonic XLC (Kings Dominion)
Python (Busch Gardens Africa)
Psyclone (Six Flags Magic Mountain)
Orient Express (Worlds of Fun)

Other Rides

20,000 Leagues Under The Sea (Disneyland)
Country Bear Jamboree (Disneyland)
Skyway (Disneyland)
Old Matterhorn (Disneyland)

This is all I could come up with for now!

I'll add some!

Alien Encounter (MK)
Food Rocks (EPCOT)
Cranium Command (EPCOT)
Mr. Toad's Wild Ride (MK)
Superstar Tv (DHS)
Tiki Room (MK)
Adventurer's Club (PI)

I'll second the nomination of the Orient Express at Worlds of Fun. What a tragic day it was when Cedar Fair took it away from us.

Does the Led Zeppelin coaster at now defunct Hard rock Park count?

How about the Ozark Wildcat at recently closed Celebration City?

And who can forget the Texas Cyclone from AstroWorld?

And just for pure "campiness", I think I would love to resurrect Superstar Limo. It was, without a doubt, the worst Disney attraction ever imagined!

I am sure I will think of others later, but these should do for now.

Oh no, James! What's going to happen to Ozark Wildcat? I hope it goes to cedar fair, if anything...

From James Rao

No one knows, Eli. It was the only ride at Celebration City worth a darn, but it is definitely a keeper. I hope Herschend doesn't just let it go to waste.

Yeah, me too... I've seen it on vid, but never been to Cel. city

From Derek Potter

I think that Silver Dollar City will get it. They would be foolish not to.

I could rattle off several coasters from the 1920's through 60's that I would love to see rebuilt, but I'll keep it fairly recent. I'll add some not mentioned yet.

Phantom Theater- Kings Island
Megazeph- Six Flags New Orleans
Big Dipper- Geauga Lake
Wildcat- Idora Park

I didn't include Hard Rock Park in this discussion, because I'm still holding out hope that one of these companies are smart and will pick it up.

Alright. Someone start drawing up those blueprints. Good luck figuring out how to wrap this stuff around internal themes...

Wow........It's hard to believe that are so many that we miss.

Seems like we could fill two parks already and that's without some now-defunct food outlets.

Kudos to Anthony for remembering Cranium Command. That was a GREAT show!

One of my all time favorite rides was 'If You Had Wings' -- the Eastern Airlines sponsored attraction in Tomorrowland. There was a speed-tunnel effect that was waaaaaaay ahead of its time.

Oh, there are a lot more where those came from.

The Parachute Jump at Coney Island.

Chaos at Opryland.

Smurf Mountain at King's Dominion. Yes, I liked it.

ABC Soap Opera Bistro at DCA.

Enchanted Oak Tavern at IOA.

The Condor, Ultra Twister, Viper and the Sarajevo Bobsled at Great Adventure.

Never ridden it but, Body Wars?

From Rob P

As simulator rides go "Body Wars" was pretty good.
A smoother ride experience than most of this type as I recall.

Kennywood Park in West Mifflin, PA has actually done this...they made Lost Kennywood. It's a shame that they seem to have gone astray and have started putting new spinny rides back there. Yuck. I'm not surprised since they also tore down the classic dark ride - Goldrusher.

But if there were a dream version I would put classic rides like Goldrusher, and Le Cachot. Then I'd put 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Ghostbusters Spooktacular, Back to the Future, and Mr. Toad's Wild Ride.

Most of you probably won't know anything about my choice but here it is. The Funhouse at Palisades Park. It was demolished in about 1970 but I spent many childhood days there. This Funhouse had all the best features- spinning barrel halls, moving floors, mirror rooms, wobbly pavements, air jets and slides. Everything would probably be outlawed today for safety reasons or because some lawyer would sue the park whenever precious little Billy or Susie scraped a knee.

That's a good point there Tony. I wonder how many attractions bit the dust due to Health & Safety issues. Our new litigious world has a lot to answer for doesn't it ?
I recently saw photos of a playground we kids used to play in. They were taken in the 1960s. The playground just wouldn't be allowed today for safety reasons and yet I don't remember any one of us ever getting hurt.

Hey, stick it in Florida and not only will you have retired rides, but it can be run by retired staff as well :)

Rob P, in your intro you mentioned Mike Fink's keel
boats. Were they the passenger powered canoe-like boats that went around Tom Sawyer Island at the Magic Kingdom? If it was, me and my college buddies in 1978 may be partly responsible for it getting shut down.

From Rob P
Posted February 28, 2009 at 5:26 AM
Tony....the "keel boats" were the small boats that chugged around the Rivers of America.
The canoes still exist at Disneyland and, as you say, are genuinely paddled by us.

Now.....you have me inrigued with your story from 1978. You can't not tell me what you guys did that was soooo bad that you might be the reason they closed at MK.

Time to come clean Tony. Don't leave anything out. ( lol )

It wasn't anything real bad but we kind of exposed a flaw in their system. There were 6 of us and we recruited a few teenage boys also on board and we decided to see if we could ram the steamwheeler and then we tried beaching it. We did this throughout the turn around the island. The tiller man really earned his pay. We were veering all over the water and were told we may be shown the exit if we didn't stop. We had our fun, we stopped.

Once you realise that you're travelling under your own power and don't have a direction that's limited by an underwater track I guess that the lure to " misbehave" can be hard to resist.

By the way it's a ride I always enjoy so long as you don't get freeloaders not paddling. We always try to go as fast as we can too. That's part of the fun.

Anyway ....nice one Tony. Thanks for sharing.

What about adding the original Spaceship Earth from Epcot. Why can't we bring back 'Tommorows child' and its catchy ride back to reality? The new ride is not in the same league, as the original!

Also, just remembered the original American 360 film that used to be in Tomorrowland WDW and Nine Eye 360 that replaced it. I think they took those out because of the Twin Towers. The comedy playhouse 'thing' that's there now is quite pathetic!
