Disney Cruise Line moving Wonder to Los Angeles

By Robert Niles
Published: March 30, 2009 at 2:50 PM
Disney officially announced today that it will move the Disney Wonder cruise ship from Port Canaveral in Florida to the Port of Los Angeles on the west coast in 2011, pending approval by the LA harbor board on Thursday.

The Disney Cruise Line has sailed from the west coast before, for a few weeks in 2005 and 2008. But this will be a two-year, and possibly five-year, repositioning of the Wonder. No details on itineraries yet, so, no, you can't make reservations.

Given that LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa was at the press event at Disney's El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, I'd say that the agreement with the harbor commissioners is pretty much a done deal.

Not a suprise! The Wonder did better on the West Coast anyway

Setting up dock space for one of the new ships, no doubt...but will the Fantasy or Dream fit in the older berths?

Don't know. Don't care. Let LA have the Wonder...I'm thinking the Magic will be relegated to the 3 and 4 day trips, and the Dream and Fantasy will host the longer cruises.

Just a guess, mind you...

They converted the old Spruce Goose area into a cruise ship dock a few years ago. Don't know if they will share the dock, but it makes sense. Problem is, it is not in the LA harbor it is in Long Beach.

Get the facts straight. The Wonder has never sailed out of the West Coast. The Magic has sailed out of LA during the summers of 08 and 06.
Disney will be sailing out of San Pedro/LA Harbor. Long Beach owns the "old Spruce Goose" dock and it is on a long term lease to Carnival so no Disney will not be sailing out of Long Beach.

RTFA, anonymous. No one said that the Wonder sailed from LA, just that DCL has sailed from the west coast.
