Is Universal Studios China on its way?
A Universal Studios theme park in Beijing appears one more step closer to happening, according to a Chinese report.
Blooloop found a report from Shanghai Securities News that officials from the National Development and Reform Commission in Tongzhou District in Beijing have filed an application to begin construction on the park in the fourth quarter of this year.
The project's budget is estimated at US$2 billion (RMB12 billion). Demolition is underway at the site, and the report says that construction would be completed by January 2018.

That is great. The more parks the less an attraction is going to cost and they get earlier return on investment resulting in even more rides for everyone.
Great! Now that will get me to visit China someday.
It will be very interesting to hear which attractions the park will include. Of the newer Universal attractions I would say Transformers and Harry Potter are a go as those franchises are popular in China. Despicable Me:Minion Mayhem is a no, since the original movie never hit theatres and the sequel is yet to release in China. Well we got a few years to see whats up.

I'm with Anon Mouse, I'd love to see some unique rides that scream "I NEED to go to China!"
My guess is that they will build some sort of "Best of Universal Park" with Transformers, The Mummy, Harry Potter Phase 1 (and maybe later Phase 2), Jurassic Park, the Simpsons, maybe Shrek or Kung Fu Panda (if they have the rights for this IP in China).
And I really hope that they learned from their mistake in Singapore and build a proper headline coaster (i.e. B&M instead of Vekoma :P).
And I think that they will opt for a lagoon style layout just like they did in Singapore (but hopefully this time with more room for expansion).

The only thing that is frustrating is that all the China parks are so far away from one another. Beijing and Hong Kong are not at all close to one another, so to go to Universal and Disneyland is not something you can really do in a single trip.
It's too bad they couldn't coordinate and do a theme park row, so to speak. The best thing about Orlando is that within a 20 minute drive, you drive past Disney World, Sea World, and Universal Studios.
Still, I think this will be great.
@Anon and Andy: How do you know it's just going to have clones? Look at all of the exclusive rides in Singapore.

I'm from Beijing and i've been tracing this project for years. In 2009, the project was unfortunately rejected by the Chinese Central Government. But this time, the government has approved it on June.26th, 2013. I think the Beijing government is waiting for a proper timing to announce the news, perhaps early this year.

Sad how every single big budget theme park arround the world is either a Disney or Universal franchise. Id love too see what say De Efteling could do with 2 billion.
