Here is my suggestion for a day at IOA (making sure you get there EARLY!!!!):
1st - Spider-Man! Do it twice during a busy period! You may not get to see it again.
2nd - Incredible Hulk
3rd - Dueling Dragons (both)
4th - Dudley Do-Right (after dropping off things in the JPRA lockers)
5th - Popeye
6th - Jurassic Park River Adventure.
7th - Check out wait for Poseidon's Fury. If it is too long, grab an Express Pass and see Sindbad. If you aren't close to a Sindbad time, then do things in Seuss Landing until that time.
Things to do later in the afternoon or when lines are long - Camp Jurassic, If I Ran the Zoo, StormForce, JPRA (fastest line in the park), Sindbad show, Talking Fountain outside Sindbad, Toon Lagoon show.
Things you can skip if you have to - Pteranodon Flyers, JP Discovery Center, Triceratops Discovery Trail, Me Ship The Olive, Caro-Seuss-el.
Best Express Passes - Poseidon's Fury, Dudley Do-Right, Popeye, Dr Doom, Spider-Man.
Also, many roller coaster fans might want to ride in front on the Hulk. DON'T! You are missing out on the best parts of this ride! The back row is easily the best row and is never as long. Dueling Dragons HAS to be ridden in front once, but if there is time for only one, Ice is scarier from the front while Fire is far better from the back.
Does anyone have other suggestions?
The parks usually open around 9:00 in the morning; it is important to get their early, but the attraction lines are still pretty short up until 45 minutes after the gates open, so it's no real worry.
Take the park in a clockwise fashion, going to Marvel Super Hero Island and working your way around: Hulk in the back is awesome, but I feel that taking the front is just as exciting, especially as you ascend the Gamma tube. Easy to do in the mornings when the front row line is short, also.
Dr. Doom is a decent thrill. Stormforce can be passed up until later in the day. Spidey is a must ride--do not miss this one. Ride as many times as you want--soak it up, it's all good.
You may want to come back to Toon Lagoon later in the day because it's strictly comprised of water attractions. It's a great way to cool off, for sure. Dudley Do-Right is a fair drench, but expect to get 'unfairly' soaked on Popeye and Bluto.
Jurassic Park is nicely themed. The dinos on the River Adventure aren't real convincing, but the end of the ride is always a real blast. Camp Jurassic is the perfect place to let the little ones tear loose--it's a huge playground and very nice.
I agree with Kevin on Dueling Dragons--front row, ice is intense, and front row, fire is a nice thrill when looking for something tamer.
Find out the times for the Sinbad show and show up early to get a nice seat--the stunt show is the best I've seen at any Orlando theme park with a great story and jokes and it's really a family friendly affair. And every seat is a good seat, honest. (if you have kids, check out the Magical Fountain in front of the Sinbad theater--they'll get a kick out of it).
I haven't seen the version 3.0 of Posideon's Fury, but I was quite upset with the recent rehab. If you've never seen it, however, I'm sure you'll find some of the special effects truly breathtaking. You stand the entire time, however, so be sure to take that into account. The wait is long, so a Universal Express pass is perfect.
Kids will really enjoy Seuss Landing--it's like being in a total Seussian world. The Cat In The Hat is a family favorite, and the kids will love the other attractions, like One Fish, Two Fish, Caro-Seuss-sel, and the If I Ran The Zoo play area.
One more thing: many people tend to rush when they go to theme parks--really wanting to get to the next attraction, and that's understandable. But really, take your time, enjoy the unique atmosphere of each island and the attention to detail--and don't be afraid to go off the beaten path. There are many quiet, beautiful trails closer to The Great Inland Sea on nearly every island--go exploring, you never know what you'll find! It's an adventure!
Food:
Fancy- Mythos
Burgers- Burger Digs
Chicken- Thunder Falls for rotissere, Fire Eaters for chicken fingers
Pizza- Cafe 4
Turkey Legs- Enchanted Oak
Snack- Hop on Pop's Ice Cream Shop
*Use single lines for Dr. D, Spidey, Hulk, and JPRA(if they have them).
*Use express on Toon Lagoon rides.
*Watch Sinbad.
*Go in the Camp Jurassic and explore around a little
*See Triceritops Encounter if it's a low wait.
*Go to the look-outs on each island for some good pics and a quiet place to rest.
*LC, JP, and TL empty out towards the end of the day.
*Stand in front of an otherwise useless door(a broom closet or back exit) and wait. Eventually, misguided tourists will line up behind you, thinking it's a line forming to one of the park's hot attractions! After about 100 people or more line up behind you, simply walk away!
What a hideous, yet brilliant idea!!!
"mwahahahahahahaha...!!!"
Joe is right about people rushing around. We tend to do this for some parks, but IOA is really a park where you can easily spend more than a day. It may not have a lot of attractions, but it has tons of little places to explore and great atmospheric places to eat. I say get a 3-Day Pass because you will NEED more than a day for USF but you will WANT more than a day at IOA.
How could you leave out The Cat in the Hat? You failed to mention it in your post.
If it's in the off season, we just go where we want, because the crowds are not there!
Let me know what you think.
David Harrison
1st - Spider-Man... twice! Or even three times since you're skipping three rides on the other itinerary.
2nd - Cat in the Hat... twice?
3rd - One Fish Two Fish
4th - Dudley Do-Right
5th - Popeye
6th - Jurassic Park
At this point you should do the Poseidon or Sindbad decision. I purposely left out the other two things in Seuss Landing because the Zoo usually opens late and the Caro-Seuss-el isn't a horrible line usually. If it is, grab an Express Pass.
As for the rest of the park. Express Pass is the way to go for the more crowded attractions. What a great system. ;)
Cat in the Hat
Poseiden's Fury
DD (Both)
Lunch (Pizza near JP)
JPRA
Dudley Do Right
Spiderman (Single Riders line)
Hulk (3 times)
Stormforce
Bluto rafts
We were done by about 5:30 in the afternoon.
I-Ride is really not going to do much for you unless you plan on doing a lot of stuff on International. It will NOT take you to the Universal parks. And the walk isn't delightful. But cabs probably would be about the same price as parking, so check that out. Your hotel may have a shuttle. If it is at a convenient time, USE IT. At least to get TO the parks.
The best Disney park... Hmmmm. I think you need to say whether you have kids or not and what their ages are. Normally I would say to look at the ratings on this site and you would see that Disney/MGM is the favorite. But it has a coaster that you probably won't like. I wouldn't say that the Tower of Terror would cause headaches, but I'm not really sure whether you don't like coasters, or if there was just a problem with THAT coaster. More info there too.
Epcot is probably a close second. For a single day, you would definitely have to decide which things you wanted to do and which you would have to leave out. There is a thread on here about doing Epcot in one day so check that out.
Magic Kingdom is good if you have young kids. Otherwise there is just too much there that can bore many adults. Animal Kingdom is nice, but way too small for $50.
We went in November last year and the weather was great. It only rained on one day and it was warm, but not humid, the entire time. The only problem was that the wind picked up before nightfall and we went on a few water rides that had us miserable afterwards. So water parks are fine, just get out of them by 5.
Again, I can't help with rides to avoid unless you explain what your problem with Space Mountain was. The Incredible Hulk and Dueling Dragons at IOA are great and not jerky, which is where I usually get headaches. If big coasters like that are impossible for you, then avoid Busch Gardens like the plague. There isn't a whole lot there beyond the coasters and animals.
Theme restaurants... Hmmm. Problem is Orlando has a million of them. Planet Hollywood at Downtown Disney is fun, but most of the rest of their restaurants are a bit pricey. We like to choose restaurants at the park hotels. They aren't as themed but you get to roam around the hotel. We really enjoyed a restaurant in the Portofino Bay at UO and Boma at Animal Kingdom Lodge. Artist Point at the Wilderness Lodge near MK was nice too, but that hotel was a nightmare with all the screaming kids. On International Drive there is Cafe Tu Tu Tengo, but you may want to check out the menu first. We didn't find a lot to interest us there, but the one in Universal Studios Hollywood is wonderful.
Based on your comments, I'm going to guess that you would like Disney-MGM or Epcot best of the Disney theme parks. Those have the best themed dining options, and both have enough "no-headache" attractions to keep a visitor entertained for a full day.
Given that you are from the U.K., I'm going to assume you've traveled a bit on the continent, so I will suggest Disney-MGM. If you've been to France, U.K., Italy, Norway, etc. in person, it'd be better to the visit the more unfamiliar environment of Disney-MGM's Hollywood than Epcot's faux Europe.
Anyway, at Disney-MGM, your best themed dining options are the Prime Time Cafe, Sci-Fi Diner and Brown Derby.
At IOA, do not miss Mythos. As a gourmet food fan, I find Mythos to be the one themed restaurant in Orlando with food that would make the restaurant worth visiting even if the theming were removed.
I'm a big space and astronomy fan, and loved visiting Canaveral, both when I was a kid and when I lived in Florida. I don't know how much time you have on your trip, though. Canaveral is a full-day side trip, once you drive out there and back.
Personally, as much as I like Canaveral, if I had just a week in Orlando, I'd rather spend the time in town, rather than doing all that extra driving. If you don't have a problem with that, and your choice is going to Busch Gardens or Canaveral, by all means, choose Cape Canaveral. Kevin's right: If you are not a thrill ride fan, you'll feel pretty left out at Busch Gardens Tampa.
The thing I hated ahout Space Mountain was that we were thrown about quite a bit in the car. When I came off, my ears were bright red and really sore (probably looked amusing but didn't feel too good), and I had a thumping headache. I just don't like roller-coasters where your head is thrown around or ones where there is a risk of hurting your tailbone (I read a comment on this on the accidents page). You have all agreed BG is not the place to go so I will heed your advice and skip it.
We have no children so I doubt we'll go to Magic Kingdom - it looks as if we'll have to choose between Epcot and MGM. I found Robert's comment on the "faux-Europe" bit interesting as I have seen quite a bit of Europe.
This website is really an excellent facility for people planning a trip. I am already nervous about going on some of the rides like the Hulk and Duelling Dragons!
Thanks again,
Mary
By the way, we are presuming that there will be much smaller lines in November - is this correct or should we still go to the big attractions first every day?
If you haven't done DD in the front, then you go there instead of the water rides and continue going counter clockwise.
Onsite guests have it made, but getting there early still counts, because the express lines can grow to 20 minutes in the afternoon. I think this thread is aimed at off site guests who are coaster fans. Getting there Early is the key.
As for the IOA coasters. Dueling Dragons isn't scary at all, as long as you don't look for the other train. Sit in the middle and keep your eyes ahead instead of at your feet and you shouldn't be scared. If you liked that, then try it again from farther back in the train and keep your eyes on your feet. That's when you can see how close you are coming to the other train. Then, if you are feeling really brave, sit in front. Now THAT is scary! But not so scary that you don't feel great for having done it.
Hulk isn't really all that scary except for the launch. So if the speedy ascent doesn't bother you, then do it first. Otherwise, wait until you feel brave after DD.
When you come back, write up a thread about it. I get a lot of emails from people too afraid to ride the coasters so it would be great to hear from someone who was scared also, but went ahead and did it anyhow. Maybe you could give that courage to someone else.
stuff to do in the afternoon
Popeye if your willing to wait in long lines. \
JP river
Seus Land
Camp Jurrasic
and to finish your day finish it off with a cold one at Jimmy Buffets before hitting the My JUrassic Park parking garage.
First the park opened at 9am but they let us in at 8:45 both mornings, so get there early. Go imediately to Spiderman and you should be able to ride it 4 or 5 times with little to no wait. Then forget about Spiderman unless you like waiting forever in line. Then go do Hulk and Dr.Doom a few times each. By this time the straglers should be coming into the park so its time to move onto other rides. i personally moved onto Dueling Dragons and rode it a couple times each side. Then it should be perfect for some water rides going on Jurassic Park, Dudley Do Right and Popeye. By this time it's lunch time. I noticed that after lunch the lines for Hulk and Doom were back down to a few minutes wait, so we would ride them a few more times before doing the loop again. The shows Sinbad and Poseidon are missably in my opinion. So there you go, October is a perfect time to go, it's not that busy and a lot of people stay out late for halloween horror nights, so the park is lighter during the day.
I plan on going with a couple of people on either the 22nd (Friday) or the 23rd (Saturday). Now, this is the week prior to Thanksgiving so I was wondering if anyone thinks that this will affect the visitors to the park on those days. Basically, I just want to have a good day (unlike HHN) at IOA and get to ride all of the rides at least twice or so. I think that I have enough of a "game" plan from reading all of these wonderful posts. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
1. Spider-Man - Get there early!! right when the park opens and go on spider-man, cause this ride will get really busy, probably the longest line you will be in all day if you go on it later...after riding it a few times, grab a express pass for later.
2. The Hulk - Usually when the park isnt busy, the wait time on this is 10 minutes. Unless you want to ride the front - which might add 10-15 minutes more to the wait. If its a busy time of the year, try and ride this as soon as you get off spider-man to avoid the long lines later.
3. Dudley Do Right - Dont go on this when its cold and rainy, cause you will get wet. This is a short line as well, so when its hot during the day, make sure you stop here to cool off.
4. Dueling Dragons - This is probably the best ride there. You have 2 options, and most people like ice better. I think they are both great rides and should definitly be riden more then once. Try and get there fast if its a busy day
5. Jurassic Park - Only go on this ride if its a slow day and you wanna try something. Personally, its a boring ride. Like being stuck in a science class...but it does pick up a bit, the dinosaurs skin is peeling off and have been famous for stoping and jerking around cause one of the circuits on the dinosaur short circuited. The drop is ok. but like i said, only if you are bored and seen everything else.
6. Cat in the hat - Probably the best kid ride there, i was embarassed going on it being a 21 year old guy. But its fun.
Those are probably the best rides to go on. If its a busy day, the shows can wait til later. try and get on spider-man though, and ride the hulk as much as you can. :)
As for special events like parades or shows, obviously those don't need special arrangements since they have posted starting times. But any special shows should be seen at their first showtime, since the theater will probably crowd up throughout the day.
But it might end up being worth it since it is a holiday weekend. Read the recent Orlando trip report and you'll see that 30-minute lines were all over IOA on the MLK weekend.
Not only do you get the Express Passes for the parks but the hotels themselves are great and have a wonderful atmosphere.
January thru March is usually not a very crowded time but I'm not sure about President's day weekend. I'll be there that weekend also, staying a Portofino Bay : ), so next time I'll know for sure how it compares.
