[This week, we start a new weekly feature on Theme Park Insider: "'Plan Your Day' Game Plan," where readers share their advice for tackling all that a theme park has to offer, while avoiding waits and other distractions that just waste your time. Thanks to Kevin Baxter for getting this started. First up, Theme Park Insider readers' current pick as the world's top park--Universal Orlando's Islands of Adventure.--Ed.]

Here is my suggestion for a day at IOA (making sure you get there EARLY!!!!):

1st - Spider-Man! Do it twice during a busy period! You may not get to see it again.
2nd - Incredible Hulk
3rd - Dueling Dragons (both)
4th - Dudley Do-Right (after dropping off things in the JPRA lockers)
5th - Popeye
6th - Jurassic Park River Adventure.
7th - Check out wait for Poseidon's Fury. If it is too long, grab an Express Pass and see Sindbad. If you aren't close to a Sindbad time, then do things in Seuss Landing until that time.

Things to do later in the afternoon or when lines are long - Camp Jurassic, If I Ran the Zoo, StormForce, JPRA (fastest line in the park), Sindbad show, Talking Fountain outside Sindbad, Toon Lagoon show.

Things you can skip if you have to - Pteranodon Flyers, JP Discovery Center, Triceratops Discovery Trail, Me Ship The Olive, Caro-Seuss-el.

Best Express Passes - Poseidon's Fury, Dudley Do-Right, Popeye, Dr Doom, Spider-Man.

Also, many roller coaster fans might want to ride in front on the Hulk. DON'T! You are missing out on the best parts of this ride! The back row is easily the best row and is never as long. Dueling Dragons HAS to be ridden in front once, but if there is time for only one, Ice is scarier from the front while Fire is far better from the back.

Does anyone have other suggestions?

I echo a lot of Kevin's points. Having a two-park annual pass, I've crafted a game plan that works usually everytime we hit Universal for a day. If you ever have the option of going to both parks in the same day, you should do IOA in the mornings--by midday, the lines stay long.

The parks usually open around 9:00 in the morning; it is important to get their early, but the attraction lines are still pretty short up until 45 minutes after the gates open, so it's no real worry.

Take the park in a clockwise fashion, going to Marvel Super Hero Island and working your way around: Hulk in the back is awesome, but I feel that taking the front is just as exciting, especially as you ascend the Gamma tube. Easy to do in the mornings when the front row line is short, also.

Dr. Doom is a decent thrill. Stormforce can be passed up until later in the day. Spidey is a must ride--do not miss this one. Ride as many times as you want--soak it up, it's all good.

You may want to come back to Toon Lagoon later in the day because it's strictly comprised of water attractions. It's a great way to cool off, for sure. Dudley Do-Right is a fair drench, but expect to get 'unfairly' soaked on Popeye and Bluto.

Jurassic Park is nicely themed. The dinos on the River Adventure aren't real convincing, but the end of the ride is always a real blast. Camp Jurassic is the perfect place to let the little ones tear loose--it's a huge playground and very nice.

I agree with Kevin on Dueling Dragons--front row, ice is intense, and front row, fire is a nice thrill when looking for something tamer.

Find out the times for the Sinbad show and show up early to get a nice seat--the stunt show is the best I've seen at any Orlando theme park with a great story and jokes and it's really a family friendly affair. And every seat is a good seat, honest. (if you have kids, check out the Magical Fountain in front of the Sinbad theater--they'll get a kick out of it).

I haven't seen the version 3.0 of Posideon's Fury, but I was quite upset with the recent rehab. If you've never seen it, however, I'm sure you'll find some of the special effects truly breathtaking. You stand the entire time, however, so be sure to take that into account. The wait is long, so a Universal Express pass is perfect.

Kids will really enjoy Seuss Landing--it's like being in a total Seussian world. The Cat In The Hat is a family favorite, and the kids will love the other attractions, like One Fish, Two Fish, Caro-Seuss-sel, and the If I Ran The Zoo play area.

One more thing: many people tend to rush when they go to theme parks--really wanting to get to the next attraction, and that's understandable. But really, take your time, enjoy the unique atmosphere of each island and the attention to detail--and don't be afraid to go off the beaten path. There are many quiet, beautiful trails closer to The Great Inland Sea on nearly every island--go exploring, you never know what you'll find! It's an adventure!

Here's the order:
1. Hulk
2. Spidey
3. P Flyers(do this only if you want to ride it, as they let people of any size ride it without a child at this time)
4. DD
5. Flying Unicorn
6. Poseidon
7. Suess Landing
8. Water rides(using Express pass)
9. Whatever you want re-rides on

Food:
Fancy- Mythos
Burgers- Burger Digs
Chicken- Thunder Falls for rotissere, Fire Eaters for chicken fingers
Pizza- Cafe 4
Turkey Legs- Enchanted Oak
Snack- Hop on Pop's Ice Cream Shop

*Use single lines for Dr. D, Spidey, Hulk, and JPRA(if they have them).
*Use express on Toon Lagoon rides.
*Watch Sinbad.
*Go in the Camp Jurassic and explore around a little
*See Triceritops Encounter if it's a low wait.
*Go to the look-outs on each island for some good pics and a quiet place to rest.
*LC, JP, and TL empty out towards the end of the day.

After hitting the best parts of the IOA(ie, Spidey, Hulk, & JP), I'd then do that crazy idea a former cast member mentioned on this site:

*Stand in front of an otherwise useless door(a broom closet or back exit) and wait. Eventually, misguided tourists will line up behind you, thinking it's a line forming to one of the park's hot attractions! After about 100 people or more line up behind you, simply walk away!

What a hideous, yet brilliant idea!!!

"mwahahahahahahaha...!!!"

From Kevin Baxter

Remember, it's more important to get the most popular things out of the way first. The Hulk may be the first thing you come to, but that line never EVER compares to Spidey's line. It is also important to take the time to hike back and forth. If it takes you five minutes to walk somewhere for a line that is 20 minutes quicker, then you have just saved 15 minutes. This will tire you out more rapidly, but this will save you plenty of time for a long restful meal or two.

Joe is right about people rushing around. We tend to do this for some parks, but IOA is really a park where you can easily spend more than a day. It may not have a lot of attractions, but it has tons of little places to explore and great atmospheric places to eat. I say get a 3-Day Pass because you will NEED more than a day for USF but you will WANT more than a day at IOA.

I like everyone's plan, but let me tell you how we do it when we're down there.
We (my girlfriend and I) have the 2 park annual pass.
We usually start off by heading to Spider Man and get a fast pass. We then head for Hulk and wait in line, ride it in the BACK, then head over and hop on Spidey.
The fast pass normally works where we go from one to the other.
we then head over to DD, and ride both, only if they have 2 trains going on each, otherwise, we're waiting too long!
It's normally lunch time after this, so we head over to Margarittaville! You just can't go wrong with a Cheeseburger In paradise and an Ice cold one!
We then head back into the park, and hit the water rides, we get a fast pass for Dudley's and go to Jurassic Park, then head back to Dudley's.
After this, we go on over to Seuss Landing, where we always get Moose Juice (orange flavor is the best) for a really good sugar kick.
After this, we just head where the crowds are not, or we go next door to Universal and blast the aliens on MIB.
We don't normally do the shows, but if it's hot, we'll get in there for the AC.

If it's in the off season, we just go where we want, because the crowds are not there!

Let me know what you think.

I meant to put Cat in the Hat under the best Express Pass section. Otherwise later in the day would be better for my itinerary. I guess we should do an itinerary for kids who won't ride the coasters. My suggestions:

1st - Spider-Man... twice! Or even three times since you're skipping three rides on the other itinerary.
2nd - Cat in the Hat... twice?
3rd - One Fish Two Fish
4th - Dudley Do-Right
5th - Popeye
6th - Jurassic Park

At this point you should do the Poseidon or Sindbad decision. I purposely left out the other two things in Seuss Landing because the Zoo usually opens late and the Caro-Seuss-el isn't a horrible line usually. If it is, grab an Express Pass.

Everything at IOA is worth seeing. Again, I might be a little biased. Your best plan of attack is to try and grab one of the onsite hotel deals and stay on site. Your hotel room key card is an automatic express pass to all the attractions all day long. Ride it all!!!

From Kevin Baxter
Posted June 19, 2002 at 4:20 AM
Well, anyone staying onsite surely doesn't need a game plan. They can just work their way around and do whatever they please. But I think it is important to note that staying onsite at a Universal hotel, while pricey, does buy you that wonderful front-of-the-line access.

I definitely agree with Harrison about hitting Margaritaville during your stay at IOA. I'd like to add something to that as well, though. Margaritaville is a great place to spend the evening as well but you MUST GET THERE BEFORE THE PARK CLOSES. Otherwise forget about finding a seat ANYWHERE, inside or outside.

As for the rest of the park. Express Pass is the way to go for the more crowded attractions. What a great system. ;)

We did IOA on our trip earlier this month. We arrived about 10:30 on Sun Morn. Unlike everyone else, we headed to the right hoping to avoid everyone who heads straight for Marvel Island. We did:

Cat in the Hat
Poseiden's Fury
DD (Both)
Lunch (Pizza near JP)
JPRA
Dudley Do Right
Spiderman (Single Riders line)
Hulk (3 times)
Stormforce
Bluto rafts

We were done by about 5:30 in the afternoon.

I didn't stress that enough in the first part of this thread, but if you do ONE SUGGESTION from this whole thread, the one to follow is to GET THERE EARLY! If you are tired, you can always go home early. If you miss the last two hours, you will have done a whole lot more in one day than if you miss the first two.

I think if you stay at the Royal Pacific resort (not expensive) you get the same line skipping privelages as you get by staying at Hard Rock and Portofino Bay. That's where I am headed on my honeymoon. I hope I am not wrong about this.

From Kevin Baxter

I read somewhere that I think they are changing this. Starting in September, I think you will only get to use it once an hour. Still, with that and Express Passes, you should still get to ride everything without a line.

We have booked a two-week holiday from the 7th to the 20th of November, and as a tourist from the UK, I have many, many questions. Any answers at all would be much appreciated!
1. We are staying at Quality Inn Plaza on International Drive. Has anyone had any experience of this hotel and could tell me what it's like?
2. Is it wise to get an I-ride pass? (Rental cars are not an option)
3. We (two adults) plan on buying a 4-park Omni Flex ticket (IOA,WnW,UO and SW). We want to visit just one Disney park. Which is the best one?
4. What is the weather normally like in November? Will it be too cold to go to the waterparks and on rides that you get soaked on?
5. I do not enjoy rides that you come off of with a headache (we did Space Mountain in Eurodisney and I hated it). Which are the most vigorous rides that should be avoided? Would it be wise to avoid Busch Gardens?
6. Which are the best theme-type restaurants in Orlando?
I love the Rainforest Cafe, Hard Rock Cafe type thing.
7. Is it worth taking a trip out to Cape Canaveral?

Once again - any comments are appreciated!

From Kevin Baxter

Yikes! Well, I will answer some of them.

I-Ride is really not going to do much for you unless you plan on doing a lot of stuff on International. It will NOT take you to the Universal parks. And the walk isn't delightful. But cabs probably would be about the same price as parking, so check that out. Your hotel may have a shuttle. If it is at a convenient time, USE IT. At least to get TO the parks.

The best Disney park... Hmmmm. I think you need to say whether you have kids or not and what their ages are. Normally I would say to look at the ratings on this site and you would see that Disney/MGM is the favorite. But it has a coaster that you probably won't like. I wouldn't say that the Tower of Terror would cause headaches, but I'm not really sure whether you don't like coasters, or if there was just a problem with THAT coaster. More info there too.

Epcot is probably a close second. For a single day, you would definitely have to decide which things you wanted to do and which you would have to leave out. There is a thread on here about doing Epcot in one day so check that out.

Magic Kingdom is good if you have young kids. Otherwise there is just too much there that can bore many adults. Animal Kingdom is nice, but way too small for $50.

We went in November last year and the weather was great. It only rained on one day and it was warm, but not humid, the entire time. The only problem was that the wind picked up before nightfall and we went on a few water rides that had us miserable afterwards. So water parks are fine, just get out of them by 5.

Again, I can't help with rides to avoid unless you explain what your problem with Space Mountain was. The Incredible Hulk and Dueling Dragons at IOA are great and not jerky, which is where I usually get headaches. If big coasters like that are impossible for you, then avoid Busch Gardens like the plague. There isn't a whole lot there beyond the coasters and animals.

Theme restaurants... Hmmm. Problem is Orlando has a million of them. Planet Hollywood at Downtown Disney is fun, but most of the rest of their restaurants are a bit pricey. We like to choose restaurants at the park hotels. They aren't as themed but you get to roam around the hotel. We really enjoyed a restaurant in the Portofino Bay at UO and Boma at Animal Kingdom Lodge. Artist Point at the Wilderness Lodge near MK was nice too, but that hotel was a nightmare with all the screaming kids. On International Drive there is Cafe Tu Tu Tengo, but you may want to check out the menu first. We didn't find a lot to interest us there, but the one in Universal Studios Hollywood is wonderful.

Hi, Mary.

Based on your comments, I'm going to guess that you would like Disney-MGM or Epcot best of the Disney theme parks. Those have the best themed dining options, and both have enough "no-headache" attractions to keep a visitor entertained for a full day.

Given that you are from the U.K., I'm going to assume you've traveled a bit on the continent, so I will suggest Disney-MGM. If you've been to France, U.K., Italy, Norway, etc. in person, it'd be better to the visit the more unfamiliar environment of Disney-MGM's Hollywood than Epcot's faux Europe.

Anyway, at Disney-MGM, your best themed dining options are the Prime Time Cafe, Sci-Fi Diner and Brown Derby.

At IOA, do not miss Mythos. As a gourmet food fan, I find Mythos to be the one themed restaurant in Orlando with food that would make the restaurant worth visiting even if the theming were removed.

I'm a big space and astronomy fan, and loved visiting Canaveral, both when I was a kid and when I lived in Florida. I don't know how much time you have on your trip, though. Canaveral is a full-day side trip, once you drive out there and back.

Personally, as much as I like Canaveral, if I had just a week in Orlando, I'd rather spend the time in town, rather than doing all that extra driving. If you don't have a problem with that, and your choice is going to Busch Gardens or Canaveral, by all means, choose Cape Canaveral. Kevin's right: If you are not a thrill ride fan, you'll feel pretty left out at Busch Gardens Tampa.

Kevin and Robert - thank you both for such informative replies! I hope that I will be able to help someone out like this after my holiday. Just to respond to a few of your comments:

The thing I hated ahout Space Mountain was that we were thrown about quite a bit in the car. When I came off, my ears were bright red and really sore (probably looked amusing but didn't feel too good), and I had a thumping headache. I just don't like roller-coasters where your head is thrown around or ones where there is a risk of hurting your tailbone (I read a comment on this on the accidents page). You have all agreed BG is not the place to go so I will heed your advice and skip it.

We have no children so I doubt we'll go to Magic Kingdom - it looks as if we'll have to choose between Epcot and MGM. I found Robert's comment on the "faux-Europe" bit interesting as I have seen quite a bit of Europe.

This website is really an excellent facility for people planning a trip. I am already nervous about going on some of the rides like the Hulk and Duelling Dragons!
Thanks again,
Mary
By the way, we are presuming that there will be much smaller lines in November - is this correct or should we still go to the big attractions first every day?

Get there EARLY. Even at 08:30am, a line forms at the gate.
Hulk (front and back), Spiderman, Dr. Doom.
Back to hulk and get an express pass.
Continue going clockwise to Rip Saw Falls.
Store shoes, socks, and shirt on Popeye in middle, you eventually dry off.
JPRA
Deuling Dragons
PF
Hulk (using express pass)
Dr. Doom (Single Rider Line)
Goto parking garage for lunch in car, check into cheap offsite hotel (rest)or go over to USF.
Come back to IOA at night as the tired are leaving.

If you haven't done DD in the front, then you go there instead of the water rides and continue going counter clockwise.

Onsite guests have it made, but getting there early still counts, because the express lines can grow to 20 minutes in the afternoon. I think this thread is aimed at off site guests who are coaster fans. Getting there Early is the key.

Like I said, if you don't like jerky coasters, then go on the Hulk and Dueling Dragons. They are very smooth! They can be scary, but you can't miss some of the best coasters in the world, can you??? Then if you really love them, Busch Gardens would make a good trip after all.

Thanks again, Kevin and Robert. Looks like it's DD and the Hulk for me. I can handle scary once it's smooth (although the accidents page has terrified me - it seems like nothing is truly safe!) You're right though - it would be an awful pity to waste an opportunity to go on the world's best coasters! I know I would be sorry when I got home. Let's just hope I don't wimp out when the time comes...

From Kevin Baxter

Wow. Maybe you should plan for Busch Gardens BEFORE IOA. Their coasters aren't as frightening. And they are also very good. Montu is usually rated a top 10 coaster itself. I suggest working your way up. Do Gwazi first since it is a woodie. Then maybe the Scorpion. It is short but okay. Then Kumba. It is fast but not terribly scary. Then Montu. I don't find Montu scary, it just flips you around a whole bunch. Avoid the Python coaster like the plague! It is boring, but worse, it is VERY jerky.

As for the IOA coasters. Dueling Dragons isn't scary at all, as long as you don't look for the other train. Sit in the middle and keep your eyes ahead instead of at your feet and you shouldn't be scared. If you liked that, then try it again from farther back in the train and keep your eyes on your feet. That's when you can see how close you are coming to the other train. Then, if you are feeling really brave, sit in front. Now THAT is scary! But not so scary that you don't feel great for having done it.

Hulk isn't really all that scary except for the launch. So if the speedy ascent doesn't bother you, then do it first. Otherwise, wait until you feel brave after DD.

When you come back, write up a thread about it. I get a lot of emails from people too afraid to ride the coasters so it would be great to hear from someone who was scared also, but went ahead and did it anyhow. Maybe you could give that courage to someone else.

From Bobby Cole

Wood coasters are jerkie sometimes. I think you would be much better riding hulk or montu then gwazi. They are funner and smoother. All the big coasters are very fun and don't hurt the average person. If you ride kumba 4-5 times in a row without a wait then you may get a headache. It all depends on the person. Just keep your head flat against the back.

ok, i just came back from ioa a few days ago and tore this park up. Keep in mind this advice is coming from a 30yr old so kiddie rides will be skipped.

First the park opened at 9am but they let us in at 8:45 both mornings, so get there early. Go imediately to Spiderman and you should be able to ride it 4 or 5 times with little to no wait. Then forget about Spiderman unless you like waiting forever in line. Then go do Hulk and Dr.Doom a few times each. By this time the straglers should be coming into the park so its time to move onto other rides. i personally moved onto Dueling Dragons and rode it a couple times each side. Then it should be perfect for some water rides going on Jurassic Park, Dudley Do Right and Popeye. By this time it's lunch time. I noticed that after lunch the lines for Hulk and Doom were back down to a few minutes wait, so we would ride them a few more times before doing the loop again. The shows Sinbad and Poseidon are missably in my opinion. So there you go, October is a perfect time to go, it's not that busy and a lot of people stay out late for halloween horror nights, so the park is lighter during the day.

Well, I went to Halloween Horror Nights and it was HORRIBLE! Too many people. So I did what anyone would do and called up guest services and complained. I ended up getting free passes to IOA and I've decided to head there next month. So here's what I am wondering:

I plan on going with a couple of people on either the 22nd (Friday) or the 23rd (Saturday). Now, this is the week prior to Thanksgiving so I was wondering if anyone thinks that this will affect the visitors to the park on those days. Basically, I just want to have a good day (unlike HHN) at IOA and get to ride all of the rides at least twice or so. I think that I have enough of a "game" plan from reading all of these wonderful posts. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Ive been to IOA a few times and ive figured out what rides to go on first, it may be similiar to the others, but...here it is

1. Spider-Man - Get there early!! right when the park opens and go on spider-man, cause this ride will get really busy, probably the longest line you will be in all day if you go on it later...after riding it a few times, grab a express pass for later.
2. The Hulk - Usually when the park isnt busy, the wait time on this is 10 minutes. Unless you want to ride the front - which might add 10-15 minutes more to the wait. If its a busy time of the year, try and ride this as soon as you get off spider-man to avoid the long lines later.
3. Dudley Do Right - Dont go on this when its cold and rainy, cause you will get wet. This is a short line as well, so when its hot during the day, make sure you stop here to cool off.
4. Dueling Dragons - This is probably the best ride there. You have 2 options, and most people like ice better. I think they are both great rides and should definitly be riden more then once. Try and get there fast if its a busy day
5. Jurassic Park - Only go on this ride if its a slow day and you wanna try something. Personally, its a boring ride. Like being stuck in a science class...but it does pick up a bit, the dinosaurs skin is peeling off and have been famous for stoping and jerking around cause one of the circuits on the dinosaur short circuited. The drop is ok. but like i said, only if you are bored and seen everything else.
6. Cat in the hat - Probably the best kid ride there, i was embarassed going on it being a 21 year old guy. But its fun.

Those are probably the best rides to go on. If its a busy day, the shows can wait til later. try and get on spider-man though, and ride the hulk as much as you can. :)

I was just wondering if their should be any changes to the game plan durring the holiday season when there are more attractions due to grinchmas. If so, please tell

From Kevin Baxter

I thought of things like that. Really, if there is anything special going on in any park, the new thing should always be done as early as possible. I wouldn't do the Grinchmas stuff first - Spidey will ALWAYS need to go first until they build something huge and new - but it does get long lines so should be early in your plan.

As for special events like parades or shows, obviously those don't need special arrangements since they have posted starting times. But any special shows should be seen at their first showtime, since the theater will probably crowd up throughout the day.

We (2 adults and 2 kids) will be at IOA for two days on Feb 17 and 18 (Presidents Day weekend). We are thinking of paying extra to stay in a Park Hotel. How much difference will a Universal Express Pass make in our "line wait time"? Will everything be so crowded that the Universal Express pass won't make a difference? How long should we expect to wait in lines?

I've never been there for as busy a period as that, but since every single ride at Universal has the Express option, those room keys are gonna come in AWFULLY handy, I think. If you've got the money to spend, I think it's worth the expense (plus, those are supposed to be some awfully sweet resorts)

Especially since it isn't a full week's worth. I can see spending an insane amount for a hotel room if it's only for a weekend.

But it might end up being worth it since it is a holiday weekend. Read the recent Orlando trip report and you'll see that 30-minute lines were all over IOA on the MLK weekend.

I try to stay at one of the Universal Hotels whenever we come up. To me it is totally worth it not to have to wait in line, especially with having two children.

Not only do you get the Express Passes for the parks but the hotels themselves are great and have a wonderful atmosphere.

January thru March is usually not a very crowded time but I'm not sure about President's day weekend. I'll be there that weekend also, staying a Portofino Bay : ), so next time I'll know for sure how it compares.

Yes, Dueling Dragons has opened again. You don't need to worry about that. And if I do say so my self, it's a vast improvement. They're red and blue once again, instead of orange and sky blue.

We are going to "IOA" the week of May 31 to June 4 between memorial weekend and "gay day" weekend. Do you think that this will be a good time to go considering we have to go in the summer.

Ummm.... no! But at least it isn't Memorial Day weekend, which would be worse. You will have to find out which park (probably IOA) is having a Gay Day event and avoid that park that day, since it will be crowded all day. Unless that is someone's reason for going, of course. Otherwise, good luck!

Hey. I am going down here the last week of May. Tues-Thurs. Do you guys think it will be too bad? I am staying at Hard Rock too, any comments on that? Thanks for your help.
