Disney's Building Again In China

Disney's signed a letter of intent to build another park in China, this time in Shanghai. It's rumored to be another DisneySea park.

I've just heard on local radio that the big mouse is getting even more global as Disney have Signed an agreement to open a theme park in Shangai.

Anyone have more information on this?

[Yep. Disney's looking to build another DisneySea park, in Shanghai. It would be the second park in China, following the Hong Kong Magic Kingdom that's supposed to open in 2006. Here's the story, from Reuters. There's one glaring error in the story, though. This would be the company's fourth Asian park. The article ignores Tokyo DisneySea.--Ed.]

I read that this IS supposed to be another DisneySea park. BUT I read that this park will not follow the Tokyo plan, but will follow the DCA/Walt Disney Studios plan. Which means it will end up being small and cheap. I don't have a clue how much effort they are going to put into the Hong Kong park though.

They shouldn't build ANYWHERE! They should be focusing on their CURRENT parks! Walt Disney Studios is reportedly a nightmare! AK still isn't a full-sized park after being open for 4 years! Epcot gets a new ride about every decade or so! The bus system in WDW stinks to high heaven! Disneyland's record of new rides makes Epcot look like Construction Central! And let's not even get into DCA!!!

The more they build, the more disney can reach out to the world. Hong Kong Disneyland is a great idea, focusing on one of the larger population areas of the world. The UK is too close to France, besides at Disneyland Paris they can cater to all of europe instead of the island countries. Also, Japan and Hong Kong are farther from each other than the U.K. and mainland Europe. Japan caters to a rather wealthy population, while Hong Kong caters to a poorer population, which may result in lower ticket prices (which is good enough for me). Walt Disney Studios is receiving good attendance, and has better rides than most theme parks, "nightmare" is a little dramatic. AK is growing slowly, consider it more a complement to the other theme parks, than a full-sized theme park. The attractions that Epcot receives every ten years are spectacular attractions. The bus system in WDW doesn't even stink! It's reliable and efficient, the buses come within 10 minutes or less, that is better than most city's bus systems. And let's not get into DCA, it's a great park, and just needs to grow a little bit.

Oh my, is someone's information deficient! First, Japan may be a wealthy nation but its people are not all wealthy. In fact, they are going through a horrible recession right now. Furthermore, Hong Kong had a much better standard of living than Japan, though I don't know if that has held up since China took over control. Walt Disney Studios is NOT receiving good attendance. They are far below projected levels which were set very low to begin with. It also doesn't have better rides than most theme parks. It only has NINE total attractions, about half of which are copies of rides in America but in uglier buildings. Yes, AK may be "complementary" to the other WDW parks, but they sure aren't charging a "complementary park" price now, are they? If getting Epcot attractions at decade-intervals is enough for you, then fine... it clearly isn't enough for the rest of us, which explains why attendance at Epcot has been falling. The bus system at WDW is anything BUT efficient. You cannot get from hotel to hotel on it. Back when Early Entry was around, they didn't even bother to add MORE buses to the routes that took people to the frickin' Early Entry park! There is simply no excuse for people to have to stand around half an hour for a bus to Epcot on Early Entry day while THREE buses arrive to pick up MK passengers TWO HOURS BEFORE THAT PARK OPENS!!!! I have never been in a city with a bus system that is THAT incompetent. And you are the ONLY person I have ever seen who calls DCA a great park. I don't think CMs that work there could bring themselves to say that!
