Theme Park Apprentice

The Apprentice: TPI Style

A new game in the making from the creators of Disney Trivia, Disney Jeopardy, and Disney Riddler Challenge. Details shall be posted soon of how the new game will work. Hope to get back to you guys tomorrow on the basis and rules of the game!

Ok well heres my way of how i thought this could work. Ill give a little synopsis. Ill be ur Donald Trump persay. We need a lot of theme park participation for this game to work, and maybe a little help from our site master. What the basis of this idea is that each week, "contestants" would give descriptions of their theme park ride. Each week, we would have a different theme whether it be a roller coaster, show, dark ride, or restaurant. And couple days, im thinking like 2 or 3, a person would be eliminated from the team. However, to run such a game I would need alot of tpi participation for the contestants. And Robert's help to put a poll up each week. This could influence my vote of who to keep a ton since we are creating rides for the people.

So to begin I would need about 10 loyal participants who would be willing to submit their own theme park creations for judging. When everyone was submitted, i would choose who to eliminate based on my personal prefference and the votes. Call it a spin on the former theme park idol. And at the end wed have our master creator. The game would go on with a few surprises as well. So are u ready to become a Theme Park Insider Apprentice?? Sign up now!

Oh and a few last minute details. Ull be working solo on this game. No teams, but u can create team names if ud like... Maybe there will be a duo week, depending on the response.

From Nick Markham
Posted April 9, 2010 at 3:33 PM
I thought since you wanted 10 people that we were having groups of 5? Oh well, I am great either way. Might actually be easier without teams now that I think about it!

From Tim W
Posted April 9, 2010 at 8:04 PM
Yea thats what i was thinkin. It would take more communication. And with people on different schedules it would just be too crazy. But id really like to a do a pair week! Alright well now we have 4 signed up, thanks Anthony!

Looks like we need a couple more people... Come on people! Even if you think you cant design a ride/ shop/ etc you probably can try and do well! ( I hope that's what were trying to do... right?).

From Tim W
Posted April 13, 2010 at 6:12 PM
Yup exactly right! you don't need to be an expert and go into great detail! Just think of a theme park idea according to the weekly cattegory, post it and give a brief description. You don't gotta be a disney fanboy or universal lover, just a lover of theme parks.

From Amanda Jenkins
Posted April 13, 2010 at 7:51 PM
I can't wait to play. I know my brillance is going to be proven yet again LOL!!! Come on people lets get this game started! I know there are more people out there just dying to show off their creativity. Here you will be in a safe and friendly environment and hopefully some theme park "imagineers" will read our ideas and implement them.

If someone does not respond in the alloted 3 days, i will send out an email and they will have 1 day to complete the challenge. Otherwise they are disqualified! Bring it on Tim!

So I like to introduce to TPI "One Little Spark Imagination Shoppe" is now open for business!

So, we all have sparks, but we create creations, right at the start everything thats new, at "One Little Spark" we light up for you!

We know that one chilling word, like shriek or killer, can spark the mind to start a thriller.
And some words like dagger, blood, and gory.
And then, a mystery story.

We feel some happy songs, some snappy dances.
Costumes and sets, spoofs and romances.
With laughs and tears, and footlights all aglow,
The sparks ignite a brand new show!

So here is "One Little Spark Imagination Shoppe" that will participate, hopefully till the end,

From Tim W

Alright guys lets start this! Welcome to TPI Apprentice! This week's cattegory will be to design a themed restaurant. Emphasis on the theme. The restaurant will be one where u get a dinner and a show! Something similar to sci fi dine in, rainforest cafe, or jekyll and hyde club in nyc. The restaurant has to be a sit down with immersive theming. Dinner shows like medieval times or dollys parton's dixie stampede can be used as well.

Please include a sample menu of a few entres, the name of your restaurant, which theme park it will be in, and a description. Please post by monday at the latest.

FYI Top 6 will be pairs week, choose ur partner asap.

Tiana’s at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Come visit Tiana’s new restaurant outside of New Orleans! Situated in Animation Courtyard, Tiana serves up some of her Daddy’s good ol cooking while his Majesty Prince Naveen brings some of the best Jazz acts on this side of bayou to entertain your ears as your bellies get nice and full! Giant Chandelier, a stage, and art deco will be the overall theme indoors. Even though Tiana is hard at work cooking, she usually comes out to see how everybody likes her food and even takes up the microphone for a ditty or two. But beware, Dr. Facilier has gotten another chance from his friends on the other side and is looking to make some deals with guests by providing a bit of sleight of hand for their amusement……Entertainment will include real New Orleans Bands, Gospel Choirs, sing alongs and Swing Dancing that guests will be invited to join. Just remember….There really is MAGIC IN THE AIR and DREAMS DO COME TRUE IN NEW ORLEANS.

Located at the American Adventure Pavilion in Epcot's World Showcase, is the table and signature service dining option: Country Side. This two story restaurant offers a casual table service downstairs for both lunch and dinner and a fine dining option upstairs for dinner only (business attire required). Country Side's downstairs is a brightly lit area where the walls are adorned with paintings of America's landscapes and well known cities. Our signature dining room upstairs has softly lit chandeliers that help show the "glow" of Thomas Kinkade's canvas paintings of America. Each table would have candles in hurricane vases on lace trimmed table cloths. Soft classical music from America's famous composers would drift gently to the ears of the patrons.

Menu items would consist of dishes that one would find in the South, North, East, and West of America.

Simpler fare would be for Country Side's downstairs, while Upstairs would put some culinary twists on well known items.

A Few Examples of the Menu:
Baked Honey Ham
Venison Stew
Clam Chowder
Pot Roast
Chicken and Dumplings
Beans and Cornbread
Crawfish
Maine Lobster
Pineapple Chipotle Roast Pork
Alaskan Crab Legs
Fresh Greens
Prime Rib
Brown Biscuits and Maple Butter

Desserts:
Pop overs
Peach Cobbler
Eggnog Custard Pie
Coconut Cake
Chocolate Pie
Pumpkin Pie
Orange Pineapple Crush Ice Cream

Specialty Drinks:
Hot or chilled Cranberry Punch
Peach Tea
Specialty Coffees

Dinner at Broadway

Location: DHS in old Hunchback theater or DCA in Alladin/toy story theater.

Description: walk into the side of the theater and be greeted by your hostess. Walk up a wonderfully smooth and flashy flight of stairs. You would arrive on a large balcony overlooking a theater. you would be seated at a table as other guests arrive at tables and regular guests arrive in regular theater seats below. You would order your food like Kansas and New York steaks, very nice burgers, gourmet veggie dishes, and many more items priced from $10 to $25. you would watch whichever play is performing that night(now this would probably open after Toy Story leaves due to the atmosphere).

Other: I don't know if either of these theaters have balconies so some major construction might be involved.

"One Little Spark Imagination Shoppe" has new restaurant for you:

Sunset Grande Ballroom Restaurant

Located on Sunset Blvd inside the Tower of Terror at Disney Hollywood Studios. The entrance will be after the photo print area and before the Tower Gifts.

Picture if you will:

Walking into a Grande Ballroom with large chandelier right in the center giving off golden rays of light, making the room shimmer in golden splendor. There are large circular tables with bright white table clothes in which the tables frame a large dancing area for guest to get up and slow dance or do the charleston or whatever. In the back directly opposite the entrance there is a stage with a live jazz band playing renditions of 20's and 30's music (hence the dance floor). There area people in period costumes actually sitting in at your table along with other guests in a big family atmosphere and you only just meet them a few seconds ago. As your are sitting there eating, dancing, and enjoying hopefully good company and talking to the people in costume all of a sudden 2 cops come bursting through the doors and third dressed as a detective shots that theres a been murder and the killer is in this very room! (gasp, shock, awe!!)

Thats right a mystery dinner show! With comedic twists of course.

This dinner show will feature the Streetmosphere Actors as the cops and detectives and also as the suspects in this crime!

Guest will sit at large tables with other families with a streetmosphere actor. This gives the actors/actresses an opportunity to tell a little about themselves and play along with the guests and also give important clues to the mystery. The large tables help with not having a lot of the actors there but enough so that you can talk to them one on one.

The dance floor, hence the reason that the tables are framing the floor for everyone to have a good view, will be turned into an interrogation area in which everyone will watch and participate. All the actors that sit at the tables will be interrogated along with some willing guests. Of course here most of the clues will be revealed and the killer will be revealed. At this point guest can guess who was the killer and if they are correct they can win a prize.

Menu:

Entree:
-Honey-glazed Cornish game hen with herbed stuffing, sweet potato, vegetables, and cranberry sauce

-Prime rib dinner with baked potato and vegetables

-Four cheese lasagna (with or without meatballs,
your choice) with vegetables and garlic bread

-Hijiki Crusted Ahi Tuna - "Seared rare" and served with Sesame Long Beans, Pickled Diakon, Soy and Wasabi Sauces

-Citrus and herb marinated Breast of chicken - With oil saffron infused Israeli couscous and meyer lemon aioli

Mystery Dessert:
If I told you then it wouldnt be a mystery!

The Sunset Grande Ballroom Restaurant will have a lot going on with good food, good music and of course a murder!

So all in all you have to ask yourselves was it a crime of passion, revenge, jealousy, or opportunity?

Name of Restaurant: Seven Seas Dinning Experience

Description: Located on one of the largest islands in the Seven Seas Lagoon at the Walt Disney Resort, the Seven Seas Dinning Experience provides a lush setting to enjoy a steak dinner in view of the Magic Kingdom.

After making reservations, guests will take a boat from the Polynesian Resort Docks to the island. Once the guests arrive, they will follow a covered path to the center of the island where a cast member leads a dinner party to their table. The tables, which will be within the Island's woods (surrounded by trees and vegetation), are connected to the center of the island by a series of covered paths. Each table, which will again be covered by the same terrace that is over the Island's paths, contains a pit grill surrounded by 8 seats.

Once dinner is ready, a specialized chef will come to each table and grill the steaks in front of the customers, not unlike the classic Japanese Teppanyaki restaurant. However, because each table is surrounded by vegetation, it creates an intimate setting.

Because the restaurant is not in a building but rather is a series of covered paths and tables, the need to keep insects from the guest would be high priority. Along the paths, torches that burn chemicals designed to keep insects away would add to the atmosphere of the restaurant while being functional.

For guest who schedule dinner at night, the conclusion of their meal will allow them to move to a special viewing area on the island to view the fireworks occurring at the Magic Kingdom.

The menu would consist of typical steakhouse cuisine (steaks, fries, grilled vegetables, chicken...) but at Disney quality. Needless to say, this would provide guests with a unique experience.

I have word that there will be a poll on the main page for all of the ideas. TPI will vote on their favorite and i will decide from the lowest 3 who will go.

From Tim W
Posted April 18, 2010 at 9:25 AM
Wok Creative has been experiencing difficulties with TPI, so here is his idea that he emailed to me.

TV Dinner - Live

Located on stage in the Hollywood Pictures Backlot section of Disney’s California Adventure and also appearing at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, guests will find a nostalgic dining experience at TV Dinner - Live. On this working television sound stage, parties are seated in Living Room “Sets” with comfortable seating that includes fold-out TV trays. After all have been seated, the maitre d’ becomes the stage manager, calling for quiet, as the show begins – in 3, 2, 1 (cue).

A corner of the stage lights up with the TV Dinner Live talk show set. The host will introduce the different segments of the evening, while interviewing the guests from the shows that will be seen throughout the evening (as we go to the clip). The proscenium has the look of a 50’s type television set. The live band plays for the talk show and enhances the feel of each show format as it plays out. The same actors will take on the roles of each scene, as they also rotate through the talk show, introducing their scenes. The one being interviewed at the time will go through the make-up and wardrobe process in front of the audience (being kept family friendly, of course). This will also give the talk show host more material to riff on.

Servers are dressed as production assistants in 50’s TV style clothing. The menu is an electronic TV Guide touch screen that will also allow each group to select what they want to watch – live program cut, each camera as they select, or multi-view of all cameras simultaneously (as well as seeing it live on stage in front of them). Commercials air on a screen to introduce some of the food choices that will be available in each course.

The first course/scene is an old Western, with appetizers. Choices include:

Bonanza Blossom Onion

Bat Masterson Hot Wings

Wild Wild West Nachos

The Dragnet Bread Basket is served as a crime drama plays out.

Things get dramatic in everyone’s favorite Soap style for the soup and salad. Diners may enjoy:

Split Pea Soap

All My Chili’n

The Young and the Lettuce

During the main course, things lighten up as everyone’s favorite family entertains in classic sit-com style. Laugh track is included – just don’t choke on your food, as the hilarity ensues. Gather around the tube for some:

Father Knows Breast of Chicken

Three’s Company Casserole

Happy Days Burger and Fries

Gilligan’s Fish and Chips

Brady Bunch Beef

M*A*S*H*E*D Potatoes

Green Acres Fresh Vegetables Dahling

Dessert rounds out the evening during the circus-type kid’s show, complete with clowns and balloons for the kids. A sampling of treats might be:

Bozo’s Clown Sundae

Captain Kangaroo’s Cobbler

Hobo Kelly’s Cream Pie

The show that has just played out may be downloaded by e-mail to their homes (for a small fee), or DVD’s are available for purchase in the All Things TV Gift Shop on the way out. The DVD contains the full show, with all viewing angles available, behind the scenes footage of the Making Of for this production, and other extras.

Yeah, this is going to be tough! I too have found that if I have post that is too long, it will not work either. I guess that bug was fixed on my end.

Anyway, I was thinking of putting my place where Playhouse Disney currently is and moving that to Hunchback's old theater. The "warehouse" was actually an eatery (and bar) before Playhouse Disney came in.

Oh and Amanda, I like yours and was thinking about doing that as well because America is poorly represented on the food side of EPCOT.

Update: I'm not sure if Robert will be placing a poll or when it may happen. I am busy tonight however, so Joshua you have until tomorrow afternoon. I hope to post who will be fired by then so we can move on with the next cattegory. And you will have until friday to submit your idea.

I thought id give you guys a heads up of the following challenges after this one so you can have some more time to think. Please do not post your ideas until each challenge is complete and someone has been fired. These are NOT definite themes, and i might get more in detail what i am looking for in these challenges. This is just a general overview

Challenge 2: Dark Ride- I will post the details tomorrow afternoon.

Challenge 3: Live Show or Parade

Challenge 4: Roller Coaster

Challenge 5: AA Show or 3D Show

Challenge 6: Themed land

Challenge 7: Theme Park with past contestants voting on the winner

There were a few more challenges i had planned such as special event and shop that could possibly replace one of the challenges.

From Nick Markham

Ok Here is Challenge 2!!

In this challenge you will be creating a dark ride. This ride does not include dark roller coasters or log flumes! A dark ride includes mild rides like Snow White's Scary Adventures or Toy Story Mania to thrill rides like DINOSAUR or water based rides like Pirates of the Caribbean or even Tower of Terror.

We all know that Disney's Hollywood Studios has very little rides as it is, and even less rides for kids. Your job is to take a movie or a tv show, not used in any park, and turn it into a dark ride for DHS. Just Remember Step Outside the Box!

Please include descriptions of the ride itself, the name of the ride, where it will be located, will it replace anything, ride vehicle descriptions, thrill or mild, use of any special effects, and anything else you can think of.

And just to let all you know, I thought that Wok Creative had the best restaurant. He stuck to his theme on the food and seemed like it would be a great restaurant. My next two favorites were Nick's Shrek restaurant and Anthony's Tianas.

One more thing...Joshua Counsil...You're Fired.

From Robert Niles

Alright guys, as youve seen the poll is up. Noone who actually participated will be eliminated this week however. You will get to see how TPIers liked your restaurant idea though. I hope the next poll can be up by friday or saturday. As the next challenge will be enacted on the following monday. I will look at the poll results for the challenge 2 along with reader comments to make my decision of who will be fired. I will only acknowledge the poll results up till sunday night or monday morning. After that we have to move on with the competition. And don't forget to look above at the challenge that was posted. Your ideas are due friday, or saturday morning at the latest. Wok Creative, if you have troubles, send me your ideas again. I will send out emails to everyone as a reminder on thursday

Better late than never, though I'm really tied-up and can't go into as much detail as I'd like to.

Considering its popularity, the Magic Kingdom is clearly hurting in the dining department. You have a couple of choices, like the Liberty Tree Tavern and The Crystal Palace, but most of the restaurants serve fairly mediocre food in an uninspiring setting.

People have also been wondering what Disney plans to do with the Swiss Family Treehouse. It's a flawed attraction in many ways. The lines move only as quickly as the slowest walker on the attraction, and many feel uncomfortable stopping to appreciate the scenery because it causes bottlenecks. The ride is not nearly as popular as it once was, though it does provide a lovely backdrop for Adventureland.

If only there was a way to simultaneously solve both problems. May I present the Swiss Family Robinson Cookout, a dining experience located in intertwining treehouse forts overlooking Adventureland.

Setting

The tree would need to be structurally reinforced to accommodate a heavier load, including capacity for at least two hundred people and a full kitchen. The kitchen and bathrooms would be centrally located for maximum serving efficiency, weight balance, and so that small dining areas could be placed on the outskirts of the branches to provide an exceptional view for the diners.

The maître d’ and serving podium would be located on the ground near the base of the tree. The tree would be surrounded by a rocky stream, as it is now, and guests would have to cross a small bridge to reach the dining area. The base of the tree could include an exotic bar and overflow dining area for busier days. It could also incorporate much of the scenery and gadgetry located in the elevated dining area. Once guests' tables were ready, they could ascend the tree via spiral staircase. For disabled guests, a bamboo elevator is located on the side.

Once guests reach the elevated level, they will find themselves among the lush greens and handcrafted devices familiar to the current attraction. The base of the tree is hollowed out to display an open kitchen area. Refrigerators, stoves, sinks, and other metallic objects are not visible. Rather, wood-fired grills, open fire pits, watermill-fed basins, and other seemingly-handcrafted kitchen devices are on display, creating the illusion of an island grill that time forgot.

The kitchen area and tree base are surrounded by an octagonal balcony area branching off into several bridges leading to small, wooden huts. Each hut accommodates approximately four tables, or one table for larger parties. The huts are covered, but are very breezy with plenty of windows. Each hut is surrounded by a balcony with additional tables for patrons who prefer to eat in the sun. Within the huts, maps, camping equipment, fossils, shells, and various other artifacts are on display on the walls. Hammocks are available for tired guests.

As previously noted, the bamboo bathrooms are centrally located and contain the only visibly un-themed elements: spotless ceramic toilets/urinals and sinks. However, the sinks will contain pumps rather than faucets and guests will have to pump their own washing water. Lime-scented urinal cakes and coconut soap complete the effect.

Activities

Each table is equipped with a pulley system that leads from the table to the kitchen. Attached to the pulleys are baskets with opening lids. If guests choose to, they can discard refuse and dirty dishes in these baskets, then use the pulley system to lower them off the table and through a window opening. If the guests are kind enough to clear their own dishes in this fashion and return them, the basket will return from the kitchen via the pulley with a treat for the guests, such as a portable first aid kit or a compass (something survival-related). Or, for adults not interested in a toy, a complimentary round of drinks or dessert could arrive at their table. Each table is also equipped with a pump and covered vat. Guests can pump their own water from a centrally located reservoir and observe the liquid travel through an intriguing system of bamboo shoots, watermills, and drains.

Servers are dressed in explorer gear, similar to the attire Russel wore in UP. They are equipped with various trinkets for patrons to play with or examine while they wait for their food. Children can use magnifying glasses and other instruments to examine fossils or artifacts and will have a chance to identify what they are examining by the time the server returns. For larger groups or groups who wish to collaborate, challenges are bestowed. For example, for two parties that arrive at approximately the same time, a timed challenge of pup tent assembling can ensue. Both parties will receive prizes for participation (it is Disney).

Food

Food will be influenced by various Caribbean islands. Three menus will be available, one each for varying tastes. A children's menu will stick largely to typical theme park fare, such as chicken fingers, small cheeseburgers, and French fries, but with some island flair (lime and garlic in the burgers, for example). Some jerk meats (e.g. chicken) and flavored rices will be available for more adventurous children. An intermediate menu will be available for older, maturer children and steak-and-potatoes-type adults. Again, spiced jerk meats and flavored rices will be available, as well as curried chicken, beans, callaloo (some type of leafy vegetable, like amaranth, taro, or Xanthosoma, which is prepared similarly to collard greens), lobster, crab, and fritters. For the truly adventurous, the above choices will be offered with their full spicy flavor, as well as "bake and shark" (fried shark sandwich), conch, Bajan flying fish, Trinidad and Tobago cascadura fish, saltfish accra, pelau (means, "cook-up," and contains meat, fish, pigeon peas, vegetables, and rice), Montserrat goat stew (with tomato, papaya, breadfruit, and dumplings), and goat curry. I'm also going to break the Magic Kingdom rules here and add liquor service, which will include custom Caribbean drinks (e.g. coconut milk-based mixed drinks) and classic selections, such as Mount Gay rum daiquiris. Food will arrive in wooden dishes rubbed with garlic and/or lime.

Servers end the meal with explorer and safety tips for the kids. All children will be presented with some kind of survival token, regardless of whether they cleared their dishes or participated in a game.

Guests can exit the restaurant via a staircase, bamboo elevator, or slides.

Sorry I don't have any pictures. I'm swamped at work.

Also, I just received your e-mail warning me about being fired. Hotmail has a tendency to trash things from blog sites. I think I'll change my TPI e-mail to my Gmail account.

I know it's not a good excuse, boss, but please have mercy! I've got a family to feed and exams to write!

Joshua, you are saved. Great Work by the way and I loved the proposal. I always thought that Adventureland needed a restaurant like this and I like that you took advantage of the treehouse. Get some advanced thinking on the next theme, the dark ride for DHS, while you can. I will add one more challenge in and will consider this a practice round.

Don't forget next challenge will be posted sometime today so get thinking. I won't have your ideas due until saturday or sunday, instead of friday. Please please be on time with your posts!!
