Water Park Apprentice Challenge 7: Water Park

The finale.

Welcome to the fianale challenge of Water Park Apprentice. We have our two contenders to be the winner in this final challenge. In one corner we have our newbie, James Koehl. In this challenge we have comeback from last season, Dan Babbitt, who was eliminated in Challenge 5 last season. Well this season he made it to the finale, along with James, one of our new contenders. Both have proven worthy of being here in our finale and have gotten the most votes at least once during the season. They are 2 of my favorites this season. Unofrtunately, our runner up from Theme Park Apprentice, Anthony Murhpy was fired last week. But the voting was extremely close! So lets give a big congratulations to Anthony for making it to the final 3 twice! Without further talking, let Challenge 7 begin with the synopsis:

Disneyland has some room for a potential third park on its property; you know that strawberry field they purchased. Well instead of a third theme park, Disney has decided to ask you for your idea to create their first water park. Therefore, in this finale challenge for Water Park Apprentice, your task is to create a water park that is up to Disney’s standards. In their water park ventures, they have designed three great water parks: Blizzard Beach, Typhoon Lagoon, and the defunct River Country. River Country had the theme of an old-fashioned swimming hole, Typhoon Lagoon has the theme of a storm ravaged tropical bay, and Blizzard Beach is a melting ski resort. Personally, I think that Blizzard Beach has the most creative theme. So there is your start for this water park; a theme must be decided upon. Before you post your ideas, you must claim your theme to guarantee no repeats.

You must include:
-Names for the park itself, the lands, the shops, and the restaurants
-At least one shop for the park and one counter service restaurant; more may be included if you wish. Please include a sample menu.
-Water slides, a lazy river, a wave pool, a family raft ride, and a water playground. More attractions may also be included.
-Descriptions of each ride; please only about one to three sentences. In this description, include the ride name and the ride type.
-A park mascot, Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon have Ice Gator and Lagoona Gator respectively.

You may want to include a flagship slide as Blizzard Beach has Summit Plummet. You can also include a water coaster as Typhoon Lagoon has Crush ‘n’ Gusher.

Good luck to the both of you, may the best man win Water Park Apprentice! Please post by Saturday.

Sounds good Dan! FYI, the both of you may use your old ride ideas as well in the parks.

Alright lets begin this week with the Water Park Apprentice Awards:

Our Most Improved Award goes to David L. David has shown tremendous improvement in his concepts since last season. While he was the first one eliminated in TP Apprentice, he made it all the way till the top 4 in Water Park Apprentice. His ideas were much better this season, making him the Most Improved.

Our Fired Too Soon Award goes to Joshua Counsil. Joshua has also improved a tremendous amount since last season. He gave us great ideas this season! Unfortunately, he had to be fired due to his illness. Darn, I was looking forward to that HP Show. I really do believe that he should have advanced to the next round at least, maybe even going towards the finale..

My Favorite New Contestant award goes to none other than James Koehl. James has astounded me and the public many weeks this season. His ideas have been imaginative and innovative. He also made it to the finale! Congratulations so far James.

Finally, the MVA (Most Valuable Apprentice) Award goes to Anthony Murhpy. Anthony has made it to the final three in both competitions. He has invented great ideas and has remained consistant. Hopefully he will be back next season with more of his amazing ideas, and possibly even claim the winning title!

(A J&S Production)

Welcome to Disney's Water Kingdom, where the oceans of the world unite in celebration of the joy that fills this amazing living planet. Life started in the oceans, and nowhere on Earth has more variety, wonder and diversity than the waters that cover most of this beautiful blue world. Join us in this celebration!

Four areas, called "Oceanareas", make up Disney's Water Kingdom: The Great White North, Tropical Sands, Duckburg, and the Seven Seas Pier, all surrounding and anchored together by the Central Port and the amazing centerpiece of Water Kingdom, the Ice Castle. The entire Water Kingdom is encircled by the World Canal, a stream which rides above a berm similar to the Disneyland berm and which serves the same function, to shield views of the outside world from the Park, to provide a method of transportation around the park, and to add to the nautical feeling of Disney's Water Kingdom. The World Canal is filled with boats of all types representing many different regions of the world. They are not free-floating, but use an underwater track. They provide free transportation from the park entrance to each of the Oceanareas. The site of a Viking longboat

Photobucket

being followed a few minutes later by a Chinese Junk

Photobucket

sailing overhead will keep visitors remembering that Water Kingdom is a unique experience. Docks are located at each Oceanarea.

The layout of Water Kingdom is very similar to Disneyland Park.

Photobucket

Admission gates are outside of the berm. Entrance is under the World Canal, which brings visitors to the first Oceanarea, the Seven Seas Pier. It proceeds straight to the Central Port and the Ice Castle, near the center of the park. To the right and paralleling Seven Seas Pier is The Great White North, while to the left and also paralleling it is Tropical Sands. Beyond and curving around the Central Port and connecting Great White North and Tropical Sands is Duckburg.

The Water Kingdom has two mascots, Charles the Arctic Char (for the Great White North ) and Angel the Emperor Angelfish (for Tropical Sands). They're boyfish-girlfish, and met on the dating service FishFinder.com. It's been tough carrying on a long-distance relationship, but they've found that occasionally the water temperature at the Ice Castle is just right for them to get together for a few minutes of "family-friendly quality time" before having to return to their respesctive habitats. They will be animated in the same style as the characters in "Finding Nemo". Of course, Donald Duck and his extended family will be the featured Disney characters in Duckburg.

The Ice Castle is a unique yet familiar iconic structure for Disney's Water Kingdom.

Photobucket

It is designed to look as if all of the famous Disney Castles were magically morphed together, then carved from ice. It would also appear to be melting, with cascades of water running down its icy sides and fountains spraying from its towers. Under the surface of the castle would be millions of LED lights, which could be used throughout the day to give it a magical, glistening, twinkling appearance, and at night would be used in the end-of-day production. The lights under its surface could also be used for daytime light shows, something that no other Disney castle can do. The water from the Ice Castle would land in pools at the base and be carried throughout Water Kingdom in streams. This would not be a walk-through castle, but would stand magnificently in a pool of beautiful, clean water.

The Ice Castle sits in the center of the Central Port, a large open area which is itself partly encircled by part of the "lazy river" that floats throughout the park. This area will provide a large viewing area for the end-of-day show.

"Seven Seas Pier"

Seven Seas Pier is not an actual pier, but a wide street/plaza lined with an eclectic mixture of structures and architectural styles from seafronts all over the world.

Photobucket

Changing rooms, including family changing rooms, lockers and rental facilities would be found as soon as visitors emerge from the tunnels under the World Canal. This is also where park guests can rent private cabana-type open-air rooms found in each Oceanarea of the park.

Photobucket

Many different shops would be found lining each side of the Pier, such as:

Pier Seven Exports (handcrafted art from around the world)
The Little Glass Shack (sunglasses)
The Outrigger Shop (swim suits, towels and all other types of swimwear accessories)
Rubber Sole (Flip-flops, shoes and all kinds of water park footwear)

There will also be several counter-service restaurants, food stands and carts. The main counter-service restaurant, The Galley, will feature seafood dishes from around the world such as:

Fish & Chips (England)
Seafood Gazpacho (Spain)
Sushi (Japan)
Penne with Shrimp (Italy)
There will also be non-fish foods available.

Photobucket

The Frozen Tasteland Ice Cream Shoppe, at the end of the Pier where it meets The Great White North, will provide dozens of flavors of ice cream, sherbert, and frozen ices, and many frozen treats.

The Fruit Bowl, at the end of the Pier where it meets Tropical Sands, will be a counter-service fruit stand, selling all types of fresh tropical fruits and fruit salads, fruit juices and smoothies.

" Great White North"

Photobucket

The Great White North is an area of icebergs, snow and a collection of wild, thrilling water rides and slides. Many of these will start atop the icebergs and weave around and through them. Riders will climb steps that appear to have been carved into the ice (which of course is not ice). One iceberg will features body slides, seven of them, each different in layout and speed. Another will contain four inner-tube slides. A third will be the launch site for three different water-propelled water coasters. The tracks, troughs and tubes for these rides and slides will twist and turn around each other, passing though holes melted in the icebergs and landing in large glacial pools (magically heated- this is Disney!)

Photobucket

One of the body slides will be enclosed completely inside an iceberg, and with a 180 foot descent will hold the title of "World's tallest enclosed water slide". It's name? "Voyage to the Bottom of the World."
There will also be a large pool for water basketball, floating "ice chunks" to climb on and fall off of

Photobucket

and an iceberg-climbing wall for explorers to try to climb the face of one of these icebergs (with plenty of safety harnesses attached).

"Tropical Sands"

Photobucket

This is the trip to the beach of a tropical island paradise that nearly everyone hopes to make at least once. This is an Oceanarea of palm trees, grass huts, and bamboo. "Crush's Wave Lagoon" will provide nearly non-stop mega waves, some of the highest available outside of Waikiki, and "Squirt's Tidal Pool" will provide young children with a shallow wave pool to play in. Four wave-ridder surfing simulators will let surfers and would-be surfers "ride the waves" safely.

Photobucket

Families who climb to the top of Mount Wanahockaloogie (it's in "Finding Nemo"...really!) can climb aboard a family-sized raft and ride down "The Bamboo Shoot", a twisting and turning trough that looks like it was made from bamboo and palm fronds. A large, sandy beach area provides plenty of space to "catch a few rays", and several sand volleyball courts will be available.

The highlight of Tropical Sands is the Coral Reef Theatre, where "Finding Nemo- The Musical" makes its California premier.

Photobucket

This hit show from Disney's Animal Kingdom at the Walt Disney World Resort will be shown five times a day in this specially designed theatre. The seats will be comfortable, yet will be covered with a special material that will not get soaked by a wet swim suit.

"Duckburg"

Photobucket

Which Disney character is most comfortable in the water (other than Nemo)? Which Disney character is usually seen wearing a sailor outfit? Donald Duck!

Photobucket

After being overshadowed for years by Mickey Mouse and the Disney Princesses, Donald has decided it is time for his own land in a Disney Park, so he convinced his rich Uncle Scrooge McDuck to move his hometown of Duckburg, Calisota, to Disney's Water Kingdom.

This play area for the young and young-at-heart is where you'll find Donald Duck and all of his duck family and friends. At the back and towering over Duckburg is Killmoter Hill and Uncle Scrooge McDuck's Money Bin

Photobucket

which also serves as the Duckburg station for the World Canal (Please read the notes at the end of the presentation about this). This hill provides support for four different water slides of different heights and speeds, so that children of all ages and sizes can enjoy the fun of the down-hill slide. It is also the starting point for the children's triple racing water slides,"Huey, Dewey and Louie".

Photobucket

These slides use two-person rafts, to allow adults and children to race together. Lake Duckburg contains small water bumper cars, while the Duckburg Municipal Pool is a shallow, toddler-friendly play area with plenty of appropriately-themed soft structures to climb on, around and through.

Other structures throughout Duckburg will provide support facilities, shops and food stands, and meet-and-greet places for Donald, Daisy, Professor Ludwig Von Drake

Photobucket

and all of Donald's extended family. This is Donald's hometown, and (at least here) he is the star!

Duckburg is one of the starting points for the Rivers of the World, a "lazy-river"-type attraction. It meanders through Duckburg, enters The Great White North and passes through a hole melted in an iceberg, then circles between the Ice Castle and Seven Seas Pier before it enters Tropical Sands. From here it returns to Duckburg. The landscaping changes as it passes through each Oceanarea- in The Great White North it will be lined with ice and rock, while in Tropical Sands flowers and palms will surround the travelers. The Rivers of the World can be entered and exited from Great White North or Tropical Sands as well as from Duckberg. Bridges cross the Rivers for pedestrians who don't wish to "ford the river". Several places along the Rivers will feature bubble rapids and waterfalls along the shore, and while floating through the iceberg water will be dripping on all who pass through it.

"An Ocean of Life"

As evening descends on Water Kingdom and the park visitors fill the Central Port, changes begin to be noticed on the Ice Castle. The lights in the Castle will begin, almost imperceptibly, to softly glow. The soft blue-white of the Castle as seen during the day will gradually brighten into a beautiful swirling blue-green glow, as though it is now underwater, with seaweeds and kelp waving in the ocean currents at the base of the Castle. When the show starts, the Castle and the entire Central Port area goes completely black, then the Castle is filled with stars. It appears that we are far out in space, moving towards a small blue spot. The spot grows larger, and we realize it is Earth. We approach it faster and faster, heading for the Pacific Ocean, then suddenly we plunge into the ocean and begin a light and laser show celebrating the wonders of the sea, its beauty, variety and sometimes drama. The dramatic music, amazing ability of the Ice Castle to become one enormous projection screen, and laser and fireworks will make this show the most memorable end-of-day show in all of the Disney family of parks.

Disney's Water Kingdom will both compliment and complete the amazing concept of a family amusement and entertainment resort that Walt Disney envisioned over half a century ago. While he might not have imagined a park of Disney's Water Kingdom's size or scope, he surely would have endorsed the concept. As Disney Parks are now found throughout this beautiful blue world, Disney's Water Kingdom brings the wonders and fun of this amazing undersea environment to the place where Walt Disney started it all, The Disneyland Resort.

Photobucket

A few notes from the designer:

1)Disney has been looking for something to attract boys to their family of characters, similar to their push of the Princesses for girls. I think Donald Duck is perfect- he is scrappy, not afraid of taking on Mickey, and best of all, he has not been featured in Disney attractions ad nauseum. Disney would need to reintroduce Donald Duck and all the residents of Duckburg to the world, and could do so with pretty much a clean slate.
2) I realize that the map of Water Kingdom has Great White North to the south of Tropical Sands. I've never been to Disneyland Resort and have no idea where this "strawberry field" that Tim mentioned is, so we chose a spot. The two Oceanareas could easily be reversed on the site (before construction begins!). If Tim would just have paid for us to make an on-site visit I wouldn't have had this problem ;+)
3) Scrooge McDuck's Money Bin would not look like the picture shown, but we could not find a good picture of any of its multiple versions that was in focus. It would be much more like a fancy mansion, much less threatening, and much more attractive.
4) I actually already have expansion plans for Disney's Water Kingdom. The area between Duckburg and Great White North will be the site of Duckburg's university, Notre Drake, where Professor Ludwig Von Drake will have two new attractions, a shoot-the-shoots ride call Water 101 and an indoor motion simulator/Imax combination call Storm Mountain (or "It's a Squall World"); Tropical Sands will have "The Rain Forest Cruise", a wet version of Jungle Cruise; Great White North will have an ice sailboat simulator.
5) I hope you have enjoyed WPA as much as I have enjoyed creating these ideas for you. It has been such a challenge to come up every week with something original, actually do-able, and fun, knowing that I have to compete with such talented Imagineers as Dan, Anthony, David and everyone else. It hasn't been easy- it has been a blast!

Me too! I usually come up with some of my good ideas right before I go to bed. So I always good to sleep with a pad of paper so I can write down my ideas. This time I could only come up with a couple ideas for Willy Wonka while for some reason I had a lot for Pixar themed water park.

Also its my birthday today and Im in WDW right now so I dont know if I will get my plan up today but I will try. I might leave you with a teaser tonight and then the full plan friday or saturday.

From James Koehl
Posted July 30, 2010 at 8:09 PM
Thanks, Tim. I was kinda worried about posting the extra commentary, but since Dan hadn't posted his proposal yet I didn't think it would look like I was trying to one-up him. I'm usually working on my write-up right up to the time I post. Since I had to post earlier than usual I used the extra time to "tweak" the proposal. I was fixing spelling goofs this evening! Once Dan posts I won't touch my proposal.
I know I get a bit wordy, and have used plenty of pics, but I approached this as actually making a professional proposal for the challenge. The pictures were only "icing on the cake"- we never chose the pics until the write-up was 99% completed. I wanted the words to create the picture, to hopefully convey the enthusiasm I felt towards my proposal, and the pics were only intended to "brighten the colors" of the pictures I tried to create with my description. I hope that, even if I had left out the pictures, I still would have done pretty well. Maybe, if I decide to participate in the next TPC, I might try to do it sans-pics. I said might. Unless I find some really, REALLY cool pics ;+)
Whatever happens, Tim, it has been a blast! Thanks for your vision!!

Pixar Landing

Pixar Landing

Pixar Landing celebrates the magic and fun of Pixar animation and there characters. The 5 “Lands” will feature some of the most memorable characters and scenes from the movies.

The park will be split into 5 lands including Pixar Pier, Car’s Toon Lagoon, Monstropolis, E.A.C. and Incredible Island. Each of these lands will include at least 1 or 2 major attractions and then have smaller slides and other attractions to keep guests having fun.

Pixar Pier:

This land will be the first land guest enter upon entering the park. To hide all the water pipes and accessories I have decided to build a mountain called Mt. Luxo. This mountain will be home to many attractions but some of these slides and other things will not be featured in Pixar Pier but in other lands.

Photobucket

Attractions:

Luxo Falls: The flagship water slide at the park. The mountains ice peak in beginning to melt and Luxo jr. went up to try to find his missing ball and as you can tell took the plunge of his life! He thought it was great and invited you to try it. At 105 feet tall it will be the tallest slide at the park.

Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: Emperor Zerg is trying to take over Mt. Luxo and Buzz has recruited you to join his newly established Water Cruiser Armada to protect the mountain.

The attraction will be a water type ride that will go around the entire mountain. The guests will climb aboard rafts with water cannons attached to them and a scoring device. The object is to go around the river an hit Zerg’s “Z’s” all around and get as mouch points as you can! But watch out Zerg will be firing back along with guests along and on bridges on the track route!

Lasseter Lazy River:

Continuous flowing, 2,00-foot "lazy river" that slowly circles the entire park, passing through gentle waterfalls, each land, mist screens, and Mount Luxo it self!. Riders can float on their own or in inner tubes provided. Think of this as the "water metro line" for the park: you can get on or off at several "stations" or "landings" convenient to the various rides.

Photobucket

Restaurants:

The two main quick serve restaurants will be featured here including:

Pizza Planet featuring:
Pizza, salads and various deserts

Remy’s
Burgers, chicken fingers, fish, and other various foods including vegetarian and other specialties.
Shops:

Andy’s Closet
This store will feature everything Pixar including toys, plush’s, clothing apparel, dvd’s etc.

Montropolis:

This land will to the left of Mt. Luxo. Mike and Sully are in need of a vacation after a long years work and have decided to bring you along for the ride!

Attractions:

Roving Doors: The company doors move from building to building and the gang figured it would be great to move from building to building while hanging on them. Well at one section the doors pass over water and they have a great time falling into the water.

So this zip-line attractions is over 400 feet in length and is over a long section of water. Guests who are strong and are able to go through all 400 feet need not worry for there will be a kink in the line which will knock you off! Guest not on the ride will be able to participate and have water cannons to shoot at guests while on the zip-line whether it be in the water or on the sidewalks!

Wazowski’s Water Chutes:
Three body slides that send riders from a height of three stories down twisting, winding channels to a splash pool at the bottom. This attraction will be on the left side of Mt. Luxo.

Car’s Toon Lagoon:

Next to Montropolis this land is dedicated to racing and going fast!

Attractions:

Photobucket

The Brickyard: Utilizing Mt. Luxo this attraction bring speed, water and racing together for an ultimate attraction.

This attraction connects 10 slides side by side and riders race each other for the ultimate win!

Maters Dragster:
Also on Mt Luxo twin inner tube runs as they race past NASCAR racing graphic elements and flags. Time clocks count-off each downhill heat and the runs are outfitted with automated audio equipment that signals the start of each race. Also, it is one of the few racing slides where pushoff speed is not a factor, as gates hold back riders until it is time for the race to begin.

Incredible Island

Next to Car’s Toon Lagoon and behind Mt. Luxo you will find this land.

Attractions:

Hero Search:
Photobucket

The Incredible’s are looking for new superheroes and set up an obstacle course to find the next hero! This attraction is largely based on ABC’s show Wipeout.

This show is held in a stadium holding 500 guests at one time and you can come and go as you please and watch who is on the course. All guests are eligible to participate and are encourage to try the course at least once. This show has 2 elements first winding and getting 20 participants and then the finale.

All guests will compete over the day to try to find the fastest 20 times to complete the first obstacle course. This is one of the most entertaining times and so guests can come and watch as they please in the stand and watch how there family, friends or compleate strangers do!

Then at a certain point in time they will stop allowing new participants and stop and find the 20 fastest times. Then there will be the finale show.

The “finale” show will then continue to whittle down the number of contestants until there is only one standing. This show is only held once so space will be limited and need to get there early! Guests in the audience will be selected to control some of the obstacles periodically though the show!

Incredible Family Rafting

This family raft ride will start on Mt. Luxo This attraction sends guests down a twisting series of rushing waterfalls. Water Park guests sit in large blue rubber rafts, which can hold a minimum of 4 and maximum of 6 persons, equipped with handles to hold on while the gushing water takes you down the slide.

The EAC

To the left of Incredible Island and to the right of Mt. Luxo you will find this land dedicated to Finding Nemo.

The EAC:

If you guessed the Eastern Australia Current you guessed right and this attraction will be the highlight attraction of the park!

This water coaster will include high speed drops, and hair pine turns being propelled by water jets on your way!

The Shark Tank:
Wave pool
Mr. Rays:
Mr. Ray couldn’t stand having kids have fun and not learn any thing so he decided to set up this experience!
Snorkel through a saltwater reef populated with stingrays, bonnethead, leopard sharks and other tropical fish

Crush’s EAC Training”

Crush may be disappointed that not everyone can climb aboard the EAC but he took matters in his own hands…I mean fins!

So shrink down to a small fish and go in to the ocean for this play area for young children featuring small slides and fountains. There are water features that spray everywhere including sunken ships and a mixture of whales and seals throughout the play area. A small sandy beach is in attendance. But watch out for the big bucket over head that says “Bait” you may or may not want to get out of the way of this bucket that looks like it will tip over any minute!

That is really cool, I'm loving the Pixar themed park as all those films are amoung my favourites!

From Tim W
Posted July 31, 2010 at 9:32 AM
I am making the poll and will submit it as soon as I am done. Great job!

It's now time for my commentary:

James- Great work, the idea of a Water Kingdom was excellent. I liked the park icon alot, as well as the park mascots. Going on to the lands, I didn't see a huge connection between them. They were all great lands, but as for being related in some way, i just didn't see it. I thought each land could have easily been blown up and been taken advantage of to create their own Water Park. My favorite land in the bunch was Duckburg. Very cute and good idea. I thought it was original and could have been the basis for the entire water park. All the other lands were good, but Duckburg was my favorite land from both of the water parks actually. An Ocean of Life was marvelous, I absolutely loved it. Great job and good luck!

Dan: I did think your theme tied things more together with the general pixar theme. While not exactly a water based theme, the pixar theme worked here. You made it sound great. The stories behind the rides were an excellent plus. I liked Luxo Falls and the Buzz Lightyear ride. The Incredible event was also very good as well as the Incredible raft ride. The EAC sounded cool, and backstory for Monstropolis was good as well. Great job and Good luck!

I have to say, this is a very tough decision on my part to decide who I want to vote for. I enjoyed both of your ideas and can see the vote being very close! The vote will be up until Monday.

I do have an idea of my own water park. Pirates Cove based off of POTC and Captain Hook. Its a place where you can experience Port Royal, Tortuga, Pelegosto, Davy Jones Locker, and Hook's Lagoon. I may try to post it this weekend, but it is a very busy weekend for me...

From Tim W

And now for the first part of Pirate Cove.

Pirates Cove will be a water park overtaken by pirates and a special crocodile, Tik Tok the Crocodile from Peter Pan. The character will be dressed up in pirate attire, eye patch included, and will walk around the park as Ice Gator used to. He will serve as the mascot for the park.

Port Royal- This land will serve as the entrance to the water park. It will be the park's main street, having shops and a restaurant. Throughout Port Royal, you can hear the lovely sounds of Yo Ho (A Pirates Life for Me). Good news to all those who love El Pirata y El Perico, a new one will open up at this water park! The restaurant will be a quick service dining featuring mexican food as it does in Magic Kingdom. Also included in this land will be Sparrow's Treasures featuring POTC themed merchandise and Parrot's Hideout featuring swim gear. Also will be the Davy Jones's Locker Room for changing purposes and storage. Docked at the edge of Port Royal will be a recreation of the Black Pearl ship used in the movies. By the Ship, there will be 3 pathways. One will lead to the thrills of Pelegosto and Tortuga, one will lead to the children's play area of Hook's Lagoon, and the final will lead to Davy Jones's Locker (the wave pool).

Coming soon: Davy Jones's Locker and Hook's Lagoon

Tim, I just had to respond to your opinion that Tropical Sands and Great White North didn't go together. I respectfully disagee for two reasons. First, they are both focused on water, one frozen and one tropical, and both types of water are essential to the world. I seperated them with the Seven Seas Pier, but they are connected by the Ice Castle, perpetually frozen by the cold of the Arctic but always melting from the tropical heat. Second, Walt Disney himself established the concept of having "mismatched" theme areas in the same park. What does Fantasyland and Adventureland have in common? New Orleans Square and Tommorowland? Ice and water are two forms of the same thing- I tried to figure out how to work in a Steampunk area to get the third form of H20 in the park, but decided to stick with Duckburg (and glad I did).
It's been an interesting day, not what I expected.

^I have to agree with you. Everyone thinks these days that a fantasy themed park should have only fantasy-like themed areas. Well, how does Frontierland work with Tomorrowland? How does Marvel work with Potter? It is not impossible to have opposing themes people! :)

Thanks, Nick! Originally I was going to find one theme for the entire park, but when Tim stated in the challenge that he wanted the names of the lands (plural)I decided to use a general theme (water in all its various forms) and have individual lands, each exploring its different forms, each standing on their own, but still interacting with the Ice Castle, the World Canal and the Rivers of the World acting as unifying features.

Well the vote is officially closed. The winner of Water Park Apprentice is James Koehl. The vote was very shocking and at first put Dan in favor and in a lead of 20 to 80 %. But things shifted the second day when James Koehl came out victorious. Congratulations to both of you and you have both done great jobs. Thank you everyone for following Water Park Apprentice, and I will see you all in October when we will begin signups for the 2nd Season of Theme Park Apprentice! I hope to see the majority of the contestants return from this mini-season, as well as some of the contestants from last season who chose not to participate. The new competition will be filled with new challenges, the return of 1 person a week elimination, and possibly a new voting system...Stay tuned.

I was actually stunned wih the results. I thought I had it and then all of a sudden James got those 120 votes in a couple hours!

Congrats James!

The question of who won is still not answered. James has proposed a redo vote or challenge due to an event that caused the sudden change in votes, which was out of his control. I'd rather have a redo vote than having a new challenge or him forfeit the title. So instead, I will be emailing some contenders to submit their vote.

I guess the only way to avoid this for the next season, is to eliminate the site wide vote. Perhaps we will only have contestants vote who will be eliminated and who will win...

Thanks for the award nod, though I feel it could have gone to TH, as well. These competitions simply eat up too much time. If we were given two weeks or more for ideas, I might have been able to continue.

5 votes were received so far. The vote, without revealing the names is 4-1. We still await on a few more including Nick Markham, Justin Miranda, Hannah Caller, and Anthony Murphy. I did not include those who dropped out in the earlier rounds for the voting process. The voting cutoff will be friday.

UPDATE: 7 votes have been received. 6 of which are for James. Again it is official, James you are the winner of Water Park Apprentice. Congratulations!

As for next season, I just can't see waiting on possibly 10-15 people for the vote of their least favorite. Also, that presents the possibility to get rid of stronger players for more devious people (not that anyone is devious). So instead, the sitewide vote will remain. However, I may be choosing a few people to be in the poll instead that are my least favorites from that week. And the contestant voting at the end will return for next season with a site wide voting for a tiebreaker.

I've been quiet about the voting results up to now because I had no idea what happened with the voting on Saturday. Like Tim, I thought the voting would be close, but when I saw Dan leading 80% to 20% I was ready to conceed and end the bloodbath. My family wanted me to wait, and when Tim said the voting would go on until Monday I decided to wait it out. The sudden flip in voting completely floored me, and something felt very wrong with it, but I didn't know what it was or why it happened.

I found out. I'll try to keep this short, but if you've read my proposals you know I have a problem with that! My co-designer, Scott, who did all my graphics, went to a convention last weekend in Georgia. While there, he told someone he met about the contest, and this guy went to TPI, read about it, and decided to vote for me (and Scott). Later, he went back to the site on the hotel computer and discovered he could vote again. And he did, over and over- we have no idea how many times he did this. He eventually told Scott that he did it to help him out. When Scott found out what had happened, well, I don't think this guy will be helping us out again, but the damage was done.

I wanted to win this, but based only on my proposals. I refuse to win by cheating, even though I had no part in it and no knowledge of what had happened, or even who this guy is. I contacted Tim immediately and told him what had happened, and that I would be willing to have a rematch if he and Dan were willing. If that wouldn't work out, I would forfeit the win and declare Dan the winner. Tim didn't want either of those to happen, and it was his idea to pole the other contestants for this final result.

Dan, I can't tell you how much I regret what happened, and I wish I could have done something to prevent it. I was proud to be in the finals with you, and would have been just as proud of coming in second to your work.

People, this was supposed to be fun, and for the most part it was. Please don't let some stupid stranger screw it up for us. I think Tim's ideas for the new voting are excellent, and I commend him for being willing to continue with this great creative outlet for us Imagineer-wannabes. The best idea to come out of the Apprentice Challenge is the original idea to hold it in the first place.

Once again, I regret this situation ever happened. Please don't let it cause problems down the road. Even Disneyland had its problems. Remember hearing about Black Friday? Walt didn't let that stop him, and look what the theme park world is like now! Thanks for supporting TPI, for supporting Tim and the TPA challenges, and lets see everyone back in the Fall!

Congrats James again on the win!

I really did enjoy the WPA and the last challenge. Well maybe I did win the popular vote and James won the "Electorial Vote" like what happen 10 years ago for president!

I would love it if we could continue the TPA and would love to hear comments from Robert on TPA and what his views on this is!

Tim what I would like you to do is set up another discusion topic so that we can comment on our likes and dislikes on TPA. For example Anthony would like the submission windows be longer especially with classes starting up again while I would like previous challengers vote for the winner while the popular vote be used as a tie-breaker.

We can discuss it and then set up a vote for each rule so that we can all agree due to popular vote.

What do you think?

Thank you ,Dan. I think your analogy of the vote to the presidential race was spot on (although being compared to GWB bothers me a little!).;+)
I think the idea of a challengers' forum is excellent, so that those of us who've been in the "trenches" can all talk about those little things that bothered us but we were too good of sports to mention. I really hope you are in the next competition- I'm sure you want to win the whole thing, and I want to get back at you for comparing me to George W. Bush!
