Next Walt Disney Challenge 8

Walt Disney World: The conclusion of the game has our two finalists creating the ultimate Disney theme park.

Welcome to the finale challenge of Next Walt Disney! this week, our two finalists, Eric S and Joseph Catlett, will be designing a theme park for Disney. You two need to state where the park is, it's name, it's theme, and it's lands (minimum of 4, at least 3 rides, 1 shop, and 1 restaurant per land).

Since this challenge is a big one, I'll give you exactly 2 weeks to complete this. That means that you have until the 17th to complete it.

We will have some complex voting. One poll will be posted on the blog. Whoever wins that poll gets a "point". Then I will be e-mailing the previous contestants (not our finalists) to see who they vote for. And of course, the one with the most points wins!

I will also be giving out awards at the conclusion of the voting.

Let the challenge begin! Good luck to both of you! Thank you Anthony for playing, you did great!

Walt Disney World presents its 5th theme park, coming in Spring 2014.

Disney's WORLDS OF WONDER

This park will focus on the greatest stories ever written, the place where the greatest heroes and villains of the printed word will reside. Some will be presented in their original well known form and others will be given a whole new twist.

Visitors to this brand new park will explore 4 very different lands.

WORLD EXPOSITION 1899

The main entrance of the park, and first land encountered, will be a Steampunk inspired take on the works of H G Wells and Jules Verne all happening at the mythical 1899 World Exposition set in the alternate historical American city of New Atlanta.

TALL TALES

A salute to the tall tales and wonder of America's mythic characters. Ride on a raft down the mighty Mississippi with Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. Meet Paul Bunyan, Babe, Johnny Appleseed and John Henry. Visit with Bigfoot, a jackalope and other mythical creatures of this great country.

OLD EUROPE

Investigate with Sherlock Holmes the seedy back alleys of Victorian London. Dare the cobwebs and creepy halls of the lair of Count Dracula. Thrill to the epic stunts and swordplay of the Three Musketeers. This is also the land where Disney characters like Quasimodo, Snow White and Cinderella will be happy to meet and greet their guests.

MIDDLE EARTH

One of the most influential fantasy stories ever written finds a permanent home here. Explore Hobbiton, the lair of Smaug the Dragon and the foreboding Mount Doom, the stronghold of the evil Sauron.

The possibilities are endless.

A full description is coming soon.

I think your theme is rather interesting, and I reallly do think that the steampunk/old style/ rustic/jules verne is the right direction for the next WDW park. It is something new that has yet to be explored at WDW, and makes sense because of the absence of Jules Verne rides and the certain aspect of adventure and mystery that the park would be about.

Sounds great, Joseph!
I might even submit my old idea, Disney's World of Adventure

From Eric S

I think I've got a pretty sick idea, but I don't want to give away the name just yet. It's a bit of a risk, but I love the idea so I hope everyone likes it.

^Eric, no guts, no glory! So what if your idea is a bit risky- if you love it and do your best, you'll have nothing to regret. I got to the finals of Theme Park Apprentice 2 and didn't win, but I loved my idea, wouldn't have changed a thing and had a great time. No regrets. I'm really looking forward to reading what you come up with. This has been a great competition, and the finals should be terrific. Good luck to both of you!

In case any of you are wondering, I'm putting the final touches on my park. I'm expecting to have it posted in full Tuesday afternoon/evening.

Looking forward to your concept as well Eric. When can we expect a teaser from you? We've both worked very hard and best of luck to you, by the way.

With the niceties out of the way.

ERIC! (as I stride through the doors of the saloon, duster flapping in the breeze) I'm calling you out!

BRING IT ON! TIME TO RUMBLE!
ROCK AND ROLL ALL NIGHT LONG, SWEET SUSIE!

I kid :o)

I most likely won't post my original idea, it's not even finished

Instead of designing a new park and sounding too similar to Joseph, I will be instead be posting a revamp of Disney's Hollywood Studios on the thread which will basically turn it into a completely reinvented new park.

I don't really want to do a teaser just because my idea is really kind of out there. But I hope to be able to post by Thursday, although it may take as long as Sunday to finish the entire write-up.
And I definitely want to say good luck to you as well. It's been a ton of fun competing. I never thought I would make it to the finals my first time out and I hope there are many more competitions to follow.

Disney's WORLDS OF WONDER theme park

This fifth Walt Disney World theme park will be built on the northern banks of the resort's Bay Lake. Monorail service will extend from the TTC and share parking facilities with the Magic Kingdom. Access to the park will also include a separate ferry service from an adjacent dock heading for the Magic Kingdom as well as obviously bus services from non Monorail hotels.

The park will be based around classic literature and folk tales and be split up into four different lands. These lands are:

WORLD EXPOSITION 1899
TALL TALES
OLD EUROPE and
UNCHARTED LANDS

Each of these four distinct lands will host attractions based upon classic books and stories that fit the character of the area.

WORLD EXPOSITION 1899 relies heavily on the stories of Jules Verne and H G Wells.

TALL TALES centers around American folk tales and the works of Mark Twain.

OLD EUROPE is the setting for stories set in Britain and the European continent.

and

UNCHARTED LANDS is the land where the tales of evil monsters and jungle explorers reside.

The park as a whole, being that the theme is "the greatest stories ever told" relies on the guest having at least a passing recognition of the stories presented. It is NOT a must however. This park will introduce some of the younger ones to the amazing characters of Western literature, and for those of us with a more thorough understanding of the subject there will be hidden gags they will appreciate.

Like any good movie, a great theme park deserves a great soundtrack. Each of the four lands will feature original music composed by some of the most gifted musicians of our times and will be discussed with each land description.

Without further ado.....Welcome to Disney's WORLDS OF WONDER theme park.

WORLD EXPOSITION 1899

BACKSTORY:
1864, Atlanta is no more. Burnt to the ground by Union General Sherman on his infamous "march to the sea". After narrowly surviving an assassin's bullet, President Abraham Lincoln has called upon a reconstruction effort that will allow the South to "rise again". With American and European investors at the helm, the great state of Georgia rebuilt the now dubbed New Atlanta as a beacon for man's promise of the future.

It is now 1899. New Atlanta, like a phoenix, rises from the ashes. A Victorian era marvel of soaring spires, dirigible airships and steam powered progress. Its coming out party of a sort is here at the World Exposition of 1899. The world watches and the past that never was....now IS!

THE LAND

Guests to WORLDS OF WONDER enter the park through this land, a Steampunk stylized home to the stories of Verne and Wells. As you enter, your eyes will be drawn first to the massive spires and steam rising from the buildings and then to the three legged skytower at the center of it all. Steampunk, by the way is the concept of an alternate past set in the Victorian era (roughly 1870-1915) where electricity is still in its infancy and steam power rules. To the uninitiated, the look of the Disney version of the Nautilus is a great example as is the film "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen".

This whole land, from the architecture to the castmember costumes to the walk around streetmosphere actors to the garbage cans will tell this Steampunk styled "story".

THE ATTRACTIONS

THINGS TO COME

Taking its name from the H G Wells story of a dystopian, fascist future this ride settles for a more light hearted take on the future world of 1999. Riders will board suspended monorail vehicles at the park's entrance and take a tour of the rooftops of the World Exposition. You will enter some buildings for a recorded narrated sneak peak at other land attractions in their respective "pavilions" and then into "the world of THINGS TO COME". Our monorails enter a show building with a humorous take on what the future might be like with robot servants, pills for meals and freeways in the sky always free of traffic snarls as you zip along in your flying car. It will be a very goofy, silly take on what a perfect future would be like.

WAR OF THE WORLDS

Based off H G WELL's book chronicling a martian invasion, this attraction is set in the sky tower at the center of the land. Guests will enter the base below the tower for a birds eye view of New Atlanta and the Exposition grounds. Aboard elevators you are whisked to the top of the tower for a 360 degree view. In this attraction you don't really go to the top of the tower, the "elevator" just drops you off into a circlevision theater in the saucer shape of the skytower's viewing area. The use of High Definition digital film will give the illusion that you really are looking out over the valley below.

Our live hostess welcome us to the top of the skytower and starts showing off the sights including dirigibles and early bi-winged steam powered airplanes. Suddenly, what appears to be a meteor shower reveals itself as something more sinister, A MARTIAN INVASION. Using a motion base and in-theater fire and smoke effects you will get a too close for comfort first hand view of the Martian tripod vehicle invasion.

20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA

Popularized by Jules Verne, Captain Nemo's submarine, the legendary Nautilus once again makes port at Walt Disney World.

Docked on the sea front edges of the Exposition, the infamous Captain Nemo's submarine is on display for the curious to explore. With Nemo gone and presumed dead, promoters have brought the Nautilus to the masses and you can now explore its engine room, ships cabins and the grand salon.

Visitors take a seat in the grand salon of the Nautilus, home of Nemo's organ and ocular viewing window. In the middle of the pre-recorded narration, Nemo's voice interrupts and demands to know who these people are. Well it doesn't matter, he says, you're now all his guests and this time we're are heading back out to sea, this time to go to depths only dreamed of.

This will be a motion simulator film ride and will incorporate bursts of water from the ruptured ship, tentacles of the giant squid reaching into the room and binaural sound technology.

THE TIME MACHINE

H G Wells time traveling trip back in time is presented here as a pavilion on world history. The preshow will be taken over by a live actor research assistant that wants to show you something REALLY interesting, a TIME MACHINE. Of course it could never really work, he says, but what if it does?!?

You enter an omnimover vehicle that begins gets "powered up" and sends you hurtling through the time stream. You pop back to the age of the dinosaurs, forward to the Renaissance, backward to the stone age and finally forward to the far flung future of the year 802,701 and a race of creatures called the Morlocks. A hideous ape like humanoid with a real dislike for humans, they try to trap us and almost do before we finally zap back to modern day 1899.

FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON

Jules Verne story of space travel comes to America, based on the coaster at Disneyland Paris. Theirs is a version of Space Mountain with coaster vehicles "shot" out of a cannon and into space. This version will keep the giant cannon, but blast us into an adventure in the style of the silent films version of the story. Think of the image of the Moon face getting popped in the eye with the rocket. You tube it if you don't know what I'm talking about. This ride will NOT be just another Space Mountain but a space coaster filled with set pieces like the lunar surface and asteroids.

RESTAURANTS

VERNE AND WELLS

Opulent dining featuring English and Continental cuisine. Picture a gilded age oasis not unlike Harmonia Gardens in Hello Dolly. Throughout the restaurant will be memorabilia based on items featured in the novels of Wells and Verne.

MOREAU'S CREATIONS

Based on the very dark book, Island of Dr Moreau, this stand will offer "unholy and unnatural" pairings of different flavor smoothies and milk shakes. (btw...my original park featured an Island of Dr Moreau ride, but my wife and I thought it would be too disturbing for a family park. Remind me to share it all with you at some point.)

SHOPS

GIFTS FROM THE FUTURE

The parks main gift shop. Designed like a dirigible air ship hangar. The "windows" are really screens showing airships taking off and landing.

EXPOSITION SOUVENIRS

Set in and around steam trains in their roundhouse, guests may purchase steampunk styled hats and jackets along with souvenir shirts for the land's major attractions and editions of the books featured in this theme park.

TALL TALES

THE LAND

A Salute to the Tall Tales and homegrown stories of the United States.

The look of the area is very quaint and reminds you of an idealized version of Mark Twain's America. A place where anything was possible, and the only thing that could hold you back is your imagination.

THE ATTRACTIONS

TOM & HUCK'S RIVER PIRATE ADVENTURE

Set sail aboard rustic, home made looking river rafts for a ride down the wild rapids of the Mighty Mississippi. Join Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn for a game of make believe as they set the jolly roger atop their raft and set off for adventure through whirlpools, waterfalls and jagged rocks. Pass half white washed fences, the pretty Becky Thatcher and Tom's strict Aunt Polly's house but watch out for the infamous outlaw Injun Joe!

P T BARNUM'S ALL AMERICAN MYTHS AND LEGENDS RIVER CRUISE

The famous showman P T Barnum has come to town and invites you to join him for a cruise down the river to meet some of America's greatest myths and legends.

Taking its cue from the Jungle Cruise. Visitors will board guided boats for a snarky, pun filled trek down the waterway. You'll see Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox, Pecos Bill and Slue Foot Sue, John Henry and Johnny Appleseed. On the wilder side have a too close for comfort encounter with Bigfoot, marvel at a family of Jackalopes (half antelope/half jackrabbit), fur bearing trout, the jersey devil, whangdoodles, fiji mermaids and finish on a snipe hunt (your skipper will remind you to come back to the ride with no wait once you find that snipe!)

FEARSOME CRITTERS CAROUSEL

Jump aboard for a spin aboard this 1880s style carousel. No horses, but choose your mount of a jackalope, squonk, whangdoodle, snallygaster, hodag or any one of the 15 different fearsome but whimsical carved critters.

RESTAURANTS

AUNT POLLY'S PANTRY

Fast food and snacks for growing boys and girls served with love (and hickory switches) by Tom Sawyer's Aunt Polly.

PAUL BUNYAN'S BBQ

Backwoods BBQ in the logging camp of Paul Bunyan himself. Burgers and Ribs big enough for the big man himself.

QUOTE THE RAVEN INN

Food court style dining in an Edgar Allen Poe inspired Public House (pub with food served). Filled to the rafters with items denoting Poe stories like Masque of the Red Death, the Raven, The Pit and the Pendulum and The Tell Tale Heart ( the floor beats occasionally, it will really throw you off guard). This american style eatery really pours on the gothic mood.

SHOPS

CALAVERAS COUNTY MERCANTILE

Based off Twain's Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, this shop specializes in stuffed animals of legendary fearsome creatures as seen on the boat ride and carousel. Tom Sawyer style straw hats and Paul Bunyan lumberjack shirts will also be available.

Area music composed by Randy Newman.

UNCHARTED LANDS

THE LAND

Journey where no one has ever dared, or at least managed to come back alive from. This land will focus on stories of raw adventure and into the very heart of darkness itself. At its center, a large mountain and temple guarding the entrance to our first attraction.

ATTRACTIONS

ALLAN QUATERMAIN and KING SOLOMON'S MINES

Journey into the deepest and darkest jungles of Africa and join Big Game Hunter and explorer Allan Quatermain as he searches for the treasure buried deep within King Solomon's Mines.

After making your way past the overgrown jungle entrance to the mountain side temple, board a mine cart for the ride of your life. Zoom past hungry lions, less than pleased natives and into the legendary treasure rooms of King Solomon where millions of diamonds, rubies and gold coin dazzle. Your vehicle is a spinning mine cart vehicle, no ride is ever the same twice as the weight of the car determines how fast or slow you spin.

BEOWULF

You are Beowulf, the great monster hunter and your task ahead of you is to journey into the lair of the personification of evil itself...the monster Grendel and its mother.

Board an omnimover vehicle through the subterranean caves, pitch black rooms and into the lair of Grendel. Grendel will be a HUGE audioanimatronic creation with next generation movement that will have you questioning, "how'd they do that?"

The ride will feature animatronic and film projection. You will have all your senses bombarded with the rank smell of the creature Grendel, the taste of sea foam in your mouth, the feel of heat against you skin from Dragon fire and binaural sound as the voice of Grendel's mother taunts your every movement.
Intense and psychological, NOT for the weak kneed!

TREASURE ISLAND

Robert Louis Stevenson's tale of Pirate and Treasure comes to life in this play area for the younger ones and parents willing to let loose.

Swing aboard ropes from rock to rock, explore Ben Gunn's cave and hidden treasure and climb aboard Long John Silver's stolen ship, the Hispaniola.

The back of the island leads to the main land and the Admiral Benbow Inn in the OLD EUROPE area.

RESTAURANTS

MOWGLI'S MUNCHIES

Fast food and drinks fit for a man-cub.

THE ADVENTURER'S CLUB

The return of the legendary Pleasure Island Club. Open all day, and still featuring the amazing performers from the club's amazing past. CONGALOOSH!!!

SHOPS

THE LOST WORLD

The name of this store references the popular book style so named which dealt with exploration of uncharted lands. The design will look like a jungle encampment with huts and camping gear strewn about.

The store will feature adventure gear, pith helmets and jungle themed plush and clothing.

GULLIVERS TRAVELS

Set in an oversized house making you feel like a miniscule Lilliputian. Visitors will find for sale collectible miniatures and children's toys.

MUSIC

OLD EUROPE

THE LAND

The birthplace of so many legendary characters, old Europe awaits. Big Ben chimes the hour, across the Seine Paris beckons and a cool chill sends shivers down your back at Castle Dracula. This land also features the Disney characters like Quasimodo who fit in with the land posing in front of Notre Dame de Paris and Cruella DeVil who likes to hang out near the shops of Portobello Road.

ATTRACTIONS

SHERLOCK HOLMES DETECTIVE AGENCY

Download a free app to your cell phone and help Sherlock Holmes solve the mystery of the stolen Crown Jewels.
This attraction will be done at your own pace as you explore the OLD EUROPE section of the park. Difficulties for kids and adults will differ as you follow clues given to you by your cell phone and interact with show elements around the area in the style of the Kim Possible experience at EPCOT. The finale of the case is held inside the building with the facade of BIG BEN. Live actors will act out the final scene with Holmes and Watson matching wits with their arch foe Professor Moriarty.

THREE MUSKETEERS SWASHBUCKLING STUNT SHOW

Enjoy a live action stunt show filled with horse riding, sword fights and general swashbucklery! Take a seat in the arena designed to look like the gardens of Louis XIV's Versailles and root on ATHOS, PORTHOS, ARAMIS and their newest ally D'ARTAGNAN as they take on the enemies of the French King.

RAID ON CASTLE DRACULA

The BIG E Ticket ride for the park lies in the fortress of Dracula the vampire. This ride is a cross between TOY STORY MANIA and THE INDIANA JONES ADVENTURE. You sit in moving motion simulator cars like Indy but shaped like the Toy Story Mania Cars. You wear 3D glasses and take your cross bow which fires wooden stakes and get to vampire hunting.

Into Castle Dracula you venture meeting up with an Audio Animatronic Professor Van Helsing who enlists your help to track down and destroy Dracula and his vampire legions. You are issued special goggles (the 3D glasses) and told that Dracula also has ghostly protectors that can only be seen with these goggles, so wearing them will help immensely.

You board the vehicle riding through the dark corridors of the vampire's castle and into the graveyard and haunted forest surrounding the castle at night. When the screens appear amongst the live action props, vampires and ghosts will come for you so be sure to fire at them with your wooden stake shooting crossbow. Like Toy Story Midway Mania you will see the projectiles heading towards your target and when hit, the vampires explode in a poof of dust while ghosts disappear. However, if your aim is not true or just a little late the vampires and ghosts will strike at you and your car will flail about.

You finally make your way to the basement of the castle and the resting place of Dracula. Your whole team must work together to take down the Transylvanian Count. At the end you are given a score declaring you anything from VAMPIRE HUNTER to WEREWOLF BAIT.

RESTAURANTS

VAN HELSING'S STEAK ON A STAKE

Fast food and bad puns are served out of the back of Professor Van Helsing's Vampire Hunting Encampment.

ADMIRAL BENBOW INN

Jim Hawking's former place of employment. Dine in a nautical theme with a view out the back of Treasure Island. Enjoy Fish and chips, steak and kidney pie and shepards pie. Try the signature dessert, THE BLACK SPOT (death by chocolate).

SHOPS

VAMPIRE HUNTERS SUPPLY STOP

In the dungeon exit of the RAID ON CASTLE DRACULA ride, take home souvenirs of the ride, vampire capes and vampire hunting equipment like wooden stakes and garlic.

PICTURES BY DORIAN GRAY

A "punny" name for a portrait studio named after Oscar Wilde's immortal Dorian Gray. Have old time photos of you taken as explorers, vampire hunter, steampunk style, Sherlock Holmes or a Musketeer. Photos available in color, black and white and tintype.

DR JECKYL'S APOTHECARY

Step into the medical practice of kindly Dr Jeckyl, at least that's who's here right now. Last time we were here some strange man named HYDE was working here and he was quite odd.
Come here for candy, baked goods and sweets.

MUSIC

Music for this land composed by the incomparable Danny Elfman. Boingo Forever!

This park will feature a number of waterways which help separate the lands (and are very appropriate, as in myth bodies of water signify change/transition) and also serve as a place to shoot off the nightly firework and laser show titled Worlds of Wonder (what a coincidence) featuring the soundtracks you've heard throughout the day.

Honestly hope you all enjoyed. It was a blast.

Waiting on you Eric, good luck.

Joseph, that was absolutely INCREDIBLE!. Probably the best description of a proposed park that I have ever seen in any competition (including my own ;+( !! I don't know if you did a huge amount of research or if you have a huge knowledge of literature, but it was an amazing collection of experiences.

Joseph....that was amazing. I just have one little thing, nothing big: I was on Youtube watching the Universal Hollywood backlot tour, and I believe they have rights to War of the Worlds. However, I absolutely loved everything else. Outstanding work!

From Joseph Catlett
Posted April 13, 2011 at 5:14 AM
Andy thank you for bringing up the WAR OF THE WORLDS and who has the rights to use it conversation. It is indeed correct that Universal released a version of War of the Worlds a few years back. What is ALSO true is that War of the Worlds, as well as every story referenced in this park, is currently held in public domain. Public domain is the law that allows works of art (and that includes books) to pass into free and open use by anyone. This generally happens 70 to 95 years after the original publishing date.

Case in point, the story of DRACULA is featured in this park. This story written more than 100 years ago has been filmed many times including Bela Lugosi's version in 1931. The Lugosi Dracula is owned by Universal and cannot be used by Disney, however the Bram Stoker version of Dracula CAN be used as long as the design used is not based on anothers interpretation.

It is funny you brought this up Andy, as I was thinking about copyright and public domain issues throughout these challenges. My thoughts have always been, so what if these parks never get built. Let's design them as if they realistically COULD be.

From Andrew Mooney
Posted April 13, 2011 at 1:59 PM
I have been following this contest silently. I must say that this proposal is breath-taking Joseph. I could visualise myself walking through this park and your addition of music really brings everything together. I find it very interesting that you have carefully thought of what is and isn't allowed with respect to copyright issues. That gives further backing to your proposal that makes it more realistic. Instead of picking stories that would potentially gain you brownie points with others, with Harry Potter being an off-the-wall example, you have brought in a new refreshing set of classic fictional stories to delight audiences for generations to come. Amazing work, thank you for sharing.

I loved it Joseph! I think you did an amazing job and really utilized an interesting rustic theme. The idea is certainly original and the literature used is perfect. I can't help but think that your OZ land would go great in this theme park as well. I would have liked to see Journey to the Center of the Earhth brought with the rest of the Verne rides, but nevertheless that land was my favorite. Perhaps the only thing i did not like was the title for the park. The name sounds very vague and to me sounds more like a Six Flags name. Other than that, great work.

After much delay, I finally have my park ready for submission. I put the finishing touches on it. I'm gonna hopefully submit it in 5 parts. The general info first, then the four lands.

DisneyElements will be the third park at Tokyo Disney. The park will feature four lands based on the four elements. EARTH, FIRE, WIND, and WATER will each feature one signature restaurant and rides, all original to this park. The architecture will be designed as very futuristic, so all of the common areas are done in white very much like a spaceship. Every land has a certain color scheme that is used everywhere in that land: earth –greens and browns; fire - reds and yellows; water – blues; and wind - silver. The park will have a conservation element along with a few things that the Disney company hasn’t really attempted. There will be little to no movie integration as far as attractions go.

From Eric S

WATER
This land has only water rides. There is a giant waterfall at the back of the land. There are ponds and streams throughout the land that wind their way across the path. Multiple fountains shoot over the path and between buildings and planters.

ATTRACTIONS

LIVING WITH THE SEAS
This ride is similar to Epcot’s Living with the Land. The ride is a slow boat ride with aquariums both above and beside the boat. During the ride, there is a voiceover narrating about the kinds of ways that marine biologists are trying to preserve the oceans and the fish that live in them among with describing certain unique types of aquatic animals. There are certain specific aquariums, such as reef, a river, deep-ocean, arctic, and one of the only great white sharks in captivity.

THE SEVEN SEAS
Hold on tight because the Seven Seas can be a bumpy ride! This log flume ride allows you to dive with the mermaids as they swim the seven seas. Most of the ride is indoors, and there are models of various ancient ports from around the world. Drops immediately follow most of them. The ride’s signature drop goes between the legs of the Colossus of Rhodes.

RAFTING THROUGH THE REEF
Grab your towels, cause your about to get soaking wet when “rafting through the reefs”! There are fish and coral formations all around. The fish spit water on you and the rapids slowly pick up. The ride is pretty tame, and is considered to be one of the most family-friendly rides.

RESTAURANT

SAKANA
Seafood lover? If so, Sakana is the place for you! This is an Asian-inspired seafood restaurant, complete with all kinds of sushi and sashimi. The restaurant is situated behind the waterfall at the back of the land. The décor will be very modern Japanese, with lots of steel and straight-edges.

SHOP

TAKING HOME THE SEAS
The gift shop after Living with the Seas is a place where each of the guests can buy their very own pet fish. The shop has a fish of all different kinds, and all the supplies you need. For the parents who don’t feel like bringing home something alive, there are also plenty of stuffed fish and friends for kids to take home.

From Eric S
Posted April 17, 2011 at 8:22 PM
WIND
This area will consist entirely of roller coasters, meant to give the rider the full experience of the wind. Each coaster will feature at least one of Disney first and very little closed space. In fact, the restaurant will be the only room in the land with four walls. This way, there will be many opportunities for the guests to enjoy the open air and smell the breeze.

ATTRACTIONS

FLIGHT
This rollercoaster give s the rider all of the thrill of hang-gliding, with none of the running off of a cliff This is Disney’s first-lay down coaster, as well as Disney’s first 150 foot drop. The ride has plenty of drops, rolls, turns, and loops. Riders get multiple feelings of weightlessness, as well as fantastic views of the park. The ride slowly lifts you to the top of the drop, before you free-fall to the group in an 87 degree drop.

RUSH
This roller coaster is just like driving down a highway in a convertible with the top down. If you’re speeding that is. This is Disney’s first 100 mph coaster, so better make sure you hold on. There are no inversions, but there are plenty of dips and turns. The ride is designed with the seats in a triangular formation, so every rider gets the thrill of sitting in the front row. The ride launches you from 0-100 in 3.3 seconds, before you go through the banked turns and multiple 50 ft drops. This is also Disney’s longest coaster at just over 3 minutes.

BREEZE
This roller coaster is just like standing a beach in the South Pacific, but instead of the air moving, you are. The coaster is not too fast but it is Disney’s first standing coaster. The drop is 90 ft and the coaster tops out at 70 mph. The ride does go upside down and does multiple corkscrews. Hopefully Breeze will cool you down on a hot summer day.

SHOP

OUT OF THIN AIR
This shop will serve up candy-flavored air, or as some like to call it cotton candy. There are other sorts of sugary treats to be had, but there are more flavors of cotton candy than you can shake a cotton candy holder at. Disney didn’t invent cotton candy, but they sure did perfect it.

RESTAURANT

NOVA
This restaurant serves American new-age cuisine, much like WD-50 in New York City. One of the signature dishes is the flavored air sampler. The restaurant is held up by suspension, much like a bridge. The inside circular with windows around all 360 degrees and the kitchen in the heart of the room.

FIRE

This land was designed with the power of fire in mind. The land is fire with vibrant reds and yellows. There is a torch in the heart of the land that burns day and night and is a stylized model of the sun in the back, which contains the signature restaurant.

ATTRACTIONS

PHEONIX
Ready for an adventure? This indoor roller coaster takes you on the wings of the mythological phoenix as it flies about, dies, and ultimately rises again. The riders board a red cart with a phoenix head and tail. The cart is lifted up to the top and drops. It goes though a loop, a few corkscrews, some banked turns and slows down. The area around the cart is black. The cart then launches up at 75 mph while the room lights up with fire, as the phoenix is “reborn.” The ride continues similar to the first part, before the ride ends back at the loading station.

FIRESTORM
Can you take the heat? This dark ride will take you inside a raging wildfire. The ride begins in a calm forest with lots of woodland creatures. All of the sudden, a raging storm begins. Lightning strikes directly in front of your cart. Suddenly, a small fire starts. The small fire becomes bigger and the cart speeds away. The cat and mouse between the fire and the cart continues for a while. The climax of the ride has the cart completely surrounded. All of a sudden, water starts to spray around the cart in steady bursts, like from a hose. The fire has been put out.

FIRE WORKS! STUNT SPECTACULAR
This show will be an acrobat and stunt show. Every stunt will have fire in some form. Whether it’s jumping through a ring fire or juggling fire, there no boundaries to what these performers will do. BMX and MotoX biker come down the aisles and ramp over a pit of fire in the center of the stages. There are indoor fireworks and the show ends when the stage explodes as the riders ride back up the aisles.

RESTAURANT
El Sol:
A Mediterranean inspired restaurant that only serves the spiciest of entrees. This restaurant will be inside of a model of the sun, about ½ of the volume of Spaceship Earth. The décor will be reflective of the food, both Mediterranean and decorated with shades of yellows and reds.

SHOP
SCENTS OF FEELING
This shop will feature all different forms of candles and incense. There are plush dragons and phoenixes for the little ones, but also unique scents designed specifically for this park. For the more interactive of the guests, they can design their own scent by combining multiple different scents.

EARTH:
Many of the buildings will have plants growing out of the roofs and along the walls. There is a gigantic tree in the center of the land, similar to the Tree of Life.

ATTRACTIONS

WONDERS OF THE WORLD
This ride is very similar to Soarin, with two very significant differences. First of all, the video is changed. Instead of California, the footage is of various places around the world, e.g. Grand Canyon, Ayer Rock, Everest, etc. The ride vehicles will be designed so they are much more versatile. This way they can tilt the rider from side to side as well as forward and backwards. This way the rider feels more like they are moving across the land.

UNDERGROUND MAZE
This maze twists and turns through the dark damp underground tunnels of an abandoned mine. There are animatronics of different mythical creatures, all family friendly of course, Minotaurs, cyclopses, and everyone’s favorite, mole people, are among the many “species” featured. There’s only one entrance and only one exit, so don’t enter if you aren’t prepared to stay for a while.

THE LIVING PLAYGROUND
This play area is designed with the Earth in mind. Kids can climb in, over, around, and through trees and plants of all shapes and sizes. There are real trees sprinkled in among the fake ones, so the playground looks and smell as real as it gets. Built into some of the trees are tree houses with different views of the park.

RESTAURANT

Terra Firma:
An African steakhouse much like a cross between Le Cellier and Jiko. The restaurant will be under the tree and have grass and plants along the roof. It would be dark with be roots growing along the walls and the furniture will all be dark and wooden.

SHOP

GREENHOUSE EFFECT
Shopping in a…greenhouse? With many plants growing, guests can take home plants like they never imagined getting at a theme park. The star of this shop are the abundant Bonsai trees, miniature trees that can enrich everyone’s home.

The signature of this park will be the night show. Named ElementsALIVE, this show will feature all four elements interacting to create a truly unique experience. Complete with pyrotechnics, water cannons, giant fans and driving music, no one guest will get the same show. Each land will have elements of the show hidden in it and once the clock hits 9 PM, they will come alive in a synchronized dance that puts the Bellagio fountains to shame.

Eric, by far your best work ever. Extremely original, very well-conceived and well-presented. This park would be a major hit! Now the hard part comes- who to vote for?

I think this is an extremely original and interesting concept. I would like to see more of a disney influence, but the park is amazing. Great work.

Wow Eric! That was your best submission, in my opinion. I'll review each land of you and Joseph's park later (I got to go any time now....). Hopefully, we can get the poll up tomorrow, and I'll begin e-mailing former contestants for their vote.

I've decided not to go land for land, but I will review:

Joseph, your park was well thought out. I loved how the park was based on literature (similar to IoA). Your lands were especially good, as were the rides. A very well thought out description, good job!

Eric, yours as just as good! The idea of elements also seems like a good fit for a Disney park. The lands all matched the theme, and the rides all sound fun. I was disappointed that there were no movie-based rides, but you had a superb entry, your best of the contest in my opinion.

I couldn't pick a favorite, that's how well they both were! No matter what happens, you're both winners! Good luck to you both.

Andy, don't let the relatively low number of votes get you down. There were so many new articles posted after it that it got buried way down the blog. I thought the two proposals in the finale were two of the best proposals in any of the TPA/WPA/NWD competitions. They were both QUALITY!

Whose the winner????

And I'd like to take a moment to make an important announcement.

Theme Park Apprentice 3...Coming June 2011
Triple the thrills, triple the twists, and triple the excitment as we venture into designing attractions for International parks.

Signups...Coming Soon

As I have stated before, this game does take alot out of me. This is why I have made a very important decision. Rather than continuing with a new game every few months (and facing boredom or redundancy), the game will take place once a year. It will be held during the months between June and August. So make sure that you sign up because there will not be another Theme Park Apprentice for a whole year! I figure that having about 8 months in the theme park industry will spark a bunch of new challenges that will be able to be explored each summer. Thanks everyone, and I hope we have a good turnout!
