JK Rowling's Pottermore Website

Universal Orlando: JK Rowling just opened up a new website called PotterMore....let the speculation begin...

Check out the site: www.pottermore.com

If you click on a link it takes you to a youtube countdown that shows basically the same thing...

Annoucement is for Wednesday June 22.

"The Associated Press talked with Rowling spokesperson Rebecca Salt about the project. Salt did say the site is not (repeat: not) a reference to a new book nor is it "directly related" to the upcoming Potter movie, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2." Alas, the Rowling camp isn't saying anything else."

I am going to do some more research, but I feel that the news has ended at this point and the speculation has begun.

I am wondering if this is the contractually obligated expansion to WWoHP...?

I kinda feel like it is gonna be that rumored Potter Encyclopedia. However, i could see it being an online game as well!

I'm guessing a Harry Potter-themed MMORPG.

From Carrie Hood

According to the rumormills on the MMO circuit we're all thinking the same as Robert. Harry Potter MMORPG, which naturally I'll play!

So I'm keeping my fingers crossed for that one!

I'm guessing a Harry Potter-themed (Insert Random Capital Letters Here).

I wouldn't have thought Rowling would allow Harry Potter to be branded as an online game like that. Then again, I never thought she'd allow for the theme park attractions to happen either.

I'd love to see a Harry Potter Encyclopaedia!

Wow TH :P
but yeah, I'm going with either MMORPG or encyclopedia

From Orlando Business Journal:

"A Universal Orlando official said the theme park has nothing to do with J.K. Rowling's pending project, reports Central Florida News 13. The author of the Harry Potter series has a new website, pottermore.com, and is expected to make an announcement Thursday morning.

Rowling's U.S. publisher, Scholastic, said it's not a new book."

The plot thickens....

I'm still laughing at TH's response! I had no clue what those random letters meant either!

From TH Creative

A Sims-like role playing game would make ZILLIONS. However Ms. Rowling (as in "rolling-in-the-Dough") once went to court to stop a guy from publishing a Potter-based encyclopedia. She indicated at the time she already intended to create an encyclopedia. So maybe an on-line, fully interactive Potter encyclopedia.

In an unrelated/related story, ya know her first husband who left her? Do you think at one point, every day, the guy stops what he's doing and thinks "Damn it!"

Quoth the house elf, "Pottermore?"

As for the first husband, if Rowling was tough to live with before Potter, can you imagine what she would be like to deal with now?!

BREAKING: News is leaking out of the cauldron. It's only a rumor but I'm hearing chatter about "hippos playing Quidditch."

Fingers are decidedly crossed!

Ok.....how do I explain this....

Pottermore looks to be an interactive reader experience with Harry Potter....where people who visit the site have a say in the shaping of the experience....

....not available until October.....

The more I read about this... the more it seems like, well, a bit of a virtual theme park - a virtual space in which readers can experience the story together.

Wonder how it plays with WWOHP? (If at all.)

virtual theme park eh? sounds like all the heartbroken fans of vmk will have a new place to hang out, now that theyre all teenagers. did anyone else actually register their email address for updates? I tried to yesterday but the system was overloaded. if it's overloaded just from people signing up for updates, I shudder for opening day. I had to get on in the middle of the night just to put my email in.

Q&A From Pottermore

Q: Will Pottermore be available in multiple languages?
A: Yes. Initially, Pottermore will be available in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. We are aiming to introduce more languages in the future – including Japanese and Korean later this year. You’ll be able to keep track of language availability here on the Insider.

Q: So Pottermore isn't a massively multiplayer online role-playing game like World of Warcraft, or a social network game like Farmville?
A: No. While there will be some simple games you can play (you'll be able to brew potions, for example), Pottermore is very much about the books: being able to experience Harry’s story in a new way and discover all the additional information that J.K. Rowling has written.

Q: Isn't there a House Cup that we compete for by earning points?
A: Yes, there is. As you progress through the story you'll also be able to earn house points and once you get to the end of the first book you can carry on earning points to help your house win the House Cup.

Q: Would you say Pottermore is a social network for fans of Harry Potter?
A: Not really. Pottermore isn’t trying to compete with sites like Facebook or the Harry Potter forums and fan sites that are already out there. Once you’ve signed up to Pottermore you’ll be able to find and invite your Facebook friends (if you're over thirteen) and leave comments in your house common room and the Great Hall, but Pottermore isn't a social networking site where you can share personal information or chat in forums.

Q: I saw the Sony logo at the top of Pottermore.com. What's Sony's involvement with the site?
A: Sony is the primary partner of Pottermore. They have been consulted and involved in the development of the site experience and will offer a range of products and services to Pottermore users.

Q: Is Pottermore the Harry Potter encyclopedia?
A: J.K. Rowling has written exclusive new material especially for Pottermore giving unique insights, back stories and additional information about the characters, places and objects in the Harry Potter series. For now, Pottermore is the only place you’ll be able to find new information from J.K. Rowling about Harry’s world, and we'll be releasing this material as each of the seven books appears on the site.

Q: Once I've been sorted, will I be able to change houses?
A: J.K. Rowling has created a series of questions for the Sorting Hat, and how you answer these questions will determine which of the four houses you’ll be in. Once you've been sorted, you won't be able to change; the Sorting Hat's decision is final!

Q: What formats will the ebooks be available in? Will I be able to read them on my iPad/Sony eReader/Kindle?
A: The Pottermore Shop is due to open in October. Our aim is to offer the ebooks in an as many formats as possible. We’ll provide more information closer to the time.

Q: I’ve submitted my email to the Pottermore website, does this mean I’m registered with Pottermore.com?
A: Not yet. If you’ve submitted your email address to the site, we'll use it to let you know when site registration is open to everyone. In other words, once you’ve received an email from us, you'll be able to visit Pottermore.com and complete the registration process.

Q: What's going to happen on 31 July?
A: We don't want to ruin the surprise but something will be happening on Pottermore.com on 31 July. Come back to the site, or keep an eye on the Pottermore Insider and our Pottermore Twitter feed for details.

I just don't understand what it is. It's not social networking, it's not a MMO, but it has something to do with games and Houses? What?

From Alan Hiscutt
Posted July 20, 2011 at 11:09 AM
I am told thats its more like an interactive journey through he books, an almost unique experience to each of us depending on what house we are in, our choices and how we dictate the story.

Of course This might just be pottergander (see what I did there?) but it sounds fun and i for one am quite interested to see it.

anything at this time is speculation but knowing JK, she wouldnt let her name nor that of Potter be linked to anything that wasnt good. Films, theme parks, merchandise. So far its all been pretty top notch IMO.

I'm excited to say that I, too, got registered early Tuesday. I am amazed (though I probably shouldn't be given the popularity of the franchise) how quickly the registration spots are filled each day - in a matter of minutes it seems! Wow!
