Fix-It Weekly Challenge – Scream Roller Coaster – Due on Sunday, October 2 @ midnight.

While Six Flags Magic Mountain does have an impressive slate of roller coasters, nothing grates on me more than their infamous roller coaster themed to a parking lot: Scream. Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to fix it. You will not have a budget, but you are not allowed to change the actual structure of the ride itself in any way; anything else is fair game (although keep it within the “possible” realm.....as in no Harry Potter theme, live ammunition, etc.).

Submissions are due by midnight on Sunday night.

For a look at the rules, posting hints, and some budget guidance (not that we have a budget this week...), please check out the introduction thread: Introducing.......The Fix-It Competition

Note: I have heard you when you say that the previous two builds were a little on the large and complex side, particularly last week’s. I know that there were several people trying to come up with something but couldn’t get anything off the ground (myself included). So we are going to head in a different direction here and try some smaller fix-its and see if this will make it a bit easier to participate. I am still learning here.......and I think that we will stay away from builds with the mini-challenge and use the mini to do some of the bizarre stuff that was previously mentioned.....we can’t do trivia every week, because it takes so long to put those together…...but we will get back to it in another week or so....

I can't believe that no one caught that I had incorrectly scored the trivia challenge....I was giving 1 point for every three instead of 1 point for every 2 correct answers. See, I am not perfect. Here is the corrected scoring along with Nick's sweep of the previous week's challenge:

Nick Markham - 20
James Koehl - 12
Mike Shirley - 7
David L - 3
Alan Hiscutt - 3
Mike Gallagher - 2
Andy Milito - 1
Anthony O'Neal - 1

Hmmmm. Id just stick minside a large building, turn the lights off and theme it to the film 'scream' have the plot being that your trying to escape the killer. Loads of chances to sell rubber knives and masks. Its not exactly rocket science but im pushed for time this week.

Oh I can't wait to work on this one...

Ok, I've narrowed myself down to two idea, now I am having trouble deciding which. One theme is really awesome but might not fit the area, and one is still somewhat awesome, though will fit the area and be more realistic... what to choose, what to choose...

I'm having some 'puter problems, so it will be Friday (probably) before I'm ready to post, but I'm going to announce (claim) my idea now. Riders will still scream, but they will do it on "STEAM", a Steampunk retheming of the parking lot coaster.

Well, given that much of the area near to there is now DC-themed, my idea would be something similar for Scream!. They already have foils for Batman (Riddler) and Superman (Lex Luthor, and the mirror coaster to this one is Bizarro), so why not one for Green Lantern?

There are a couple of different characters that I think would work, but ultimately, I would name the coaster after the individual that went from greatest to renegade: SINESTRO!

I would start by enclosing the queue and loading areas, and theme it like space. Along the walkway, tell the story of how Sinestro went from one of the greatest members of the Green Lanterns to their fiercest enemy, up until he was able to find a way to harness another emotion other than Will: Fear (hence the Scream! tie-in).

I would re-theme the area outside around the planet Qward (the Oa equivalent in the Anti-Matter Universe) by structuring a landscape around it. I would paint the coaster yellow and black. The rest stays the same, and light it up at night so it looks menacing and wicked.

"Scream", the infamous "parking lot coaster" at Six Flags Magic Mountain, is finally taking its place as the best themed coaster at the best coaster park on the West Coast. A new visual look, new special effects and a new name turn the original attraction into a spectacular mechanical sculpture as fascinating to watch as it is to ride. Riders will still scream, but they will do it on "Steam".

Photobucket

The entrance building will be redressed as a Victorian Steampunk Era railroad station. The fancy decorative work that is distinctive of the Victorian Era is embellished with the metallic steam-driven machines of Steampunk. Ride attendants will be appropriately dressed with the bizarre accessories that are so much a part of the Steampunk culture.

Photobucket

The entire ride will be surrounded by massive Steampunk-type constructions. Riders will race through huge rotating gears, spinning centrifugal governors, engines blowing huge jets of steam, and every possible fantastic mechanical contraption. The ground under the coaster will be covered with metal structures to hide the parking lot asphalt, and every effort will be made to block the view of the neighboring parking lot by the riders.

Photobucket

These Steampunk structures will strictly be decorative, and will not in any way be used in the functioning of the ride. The ride vehicles will be rethemed and repainted to fit the new look of Steam, but the coaster layout and will not be changed. Retheming this coaster will hid the parking lot from the view of riders, and will give newly-arriving visitors to SFMM an unusual and visually exciting site as they approach the park.

Just wondering, is Alan Hiscutt's comment considered an actual entry. I don't want to steal his idea if it is...

From Alan Hiscutt

It was. However should you wish to expand on it i will retract my entry on the grounds of its weak and you obviously have an idea :)

Consider it officially retracted :)

I actually have a few ideas, including that theme, but it is so hard to choose. I will make my decision and post tomorrow, but thanks Alan for helping out! :)

EDIT: Wow that was quick, an idea popped into my head, and I decided on idea. It is not Scream (the movie) but thanks again Alan for your consideration!

James, great stuff.

Incidentally, the coaster Wildfire at Silver Dollar City has somewhat of a Steampunk theme, although it is not nearly as elaborate as your design for Scream.

VALENCIA, CA - For the 2012 season, Six Flags Magic Mountain is pleased to announce a second addition to the park alongside Lex Luther Tower of Doom: Bizarro. While many East Coast fans have been treated to a taste of Bizarro, this retheming of Scream, a world-class floorless coaster built by the incredible B&M, will out do any other.

The theming begins at the moment you see the ride. The twisting purple, yellow, and powder blue track loom over the large Luther Corp. facility. Entering the queue you are within the Luther Corp. facility. You pass by some locked doors, screams and insane laughter heard behind them. You then enter the pre-show room, a large dark room which, when lit, reveals Luthor and his scientists making a clone of superman (using holographics to make it appear as if they are really there). A giant explosion occurs, and the result is a dumb downed, evil version of Superman. So they decide to lock him up in one of the rooms where he has his other failures locked up. When you leave the pre-show room, however, the next room you enter shows a cell, marked with the name BIZARRO, but nobody in it, just a giant hole in the ceiling where Bizarro had broken out, and the words "Bizarro #1" spray painted across the walls.

Taking some stairs up to enter the station, riders board their floorless cars matching the color of the coaster track along with stereos built in for an exciting on-board soundtrack. as the ride begins, riders take the 150 ft. lift hill to the top of the hill before plunging down into Metropolis. The formerly, highly criticized, parking lot terrain has had dark, black tarmac laid over it and an entire city built around the twisting track.

Riders plummet into an "above ground tunnel" (like the one for Bizarro at SFNE but above ground to enclose the track) below Bizarro's fist, lights flashing all around him, before launching out of the mist-filled tunnel into a loop, then Imelemann, rushing past blazing, bluish purple colored flames, into a vertical g-roll through a billboard. Then riders enter an intense cobra roll and enter a mid-course brake before plummeting once again, though this time into two, interlocking corkscrews, a couple more twists and turns, and then the brakes taking you into a dark tunnel.

While the Bizarro #1 music is playing, you are encounted by a life-sized Bizarro animatronic watching as the riders return into the station.

This will be a Bizarro highly-themed roller coaster unlike any other, something that will thrill riders for many years to come!

Go Big, Go Six Flags! TM

Don't know if it will be as good as Bizarro at SFNE, Nick, but I like the idea. Nice work.

^Thanks. And, are you not a man of theming? Does a fully themed queue and full fledged Bizarro animatronic quench your "theme-thirst"? ;D

Nick, impressive as always!

From James Rao

The decorations will be amazing, Nick, just not sure the ride itself will match Bizarro. Scream just doesn't quite pack the punch of the Six Flags New England masterpiece!

From Nick Markham

Thanks to both James! :D

And I agree Mr. Rao, there is no chance Scream can stand up to SFNE's Bizarro, though SFGAdv's on the other hand...

This makes me really uncomfortable. Reviewing my competition is really hard to do- it's hard to be critical without sounding like a bad sport, and hard to praise my own work without sounding pompous. Nick's work was outstanding as always- I already said that. He has a great imagination and can describe what he wants in very visual term. The video he produced was really interesting and probably the best one he's made yet in all the competitons, but I question how much it actually added to the presentation of his idea. I didn't know who Bizarro was before I saw it (remember, I'm old) and I still don't know where he came from or who he is. Sorry. I think that I could enjoy the rethemed coaster immensely without being educated about who he is- it would be an exciting sensory experience, much better than in its present condition.
Alan and Anthony- sorry, but there wasn't anything there to judge. I suspect you both can come up with some really great ideas when and if you find the time to sit down and let your creative juices flow.

1. Nick
2. James
3. Alan and Anthony (tie)

Jeff, is there any way to do this without having to post these reviews? Can we send them to you and have you edit them and post them anonymously? I'm not ashamed about what I wrote, but we "artistic types" somehow have thin skin and can take what is meant constuctively as being descructive.

Well, what can I say? I've got major changes going on at work (some of which take me out of town), recertification credits to finish, painting class, and it's finally nice enough to go outside down here. . . not as much time for the internets. LOL!

See, that's what I mean. There is no way I was trying to bad-mouth you or what you posted, but somehow it came across that way. There have been challenges in here that I haven't posted anything because I had no time to come up with an idea. I do apologize if I came across heavy-handed.
Jeff, from now on, I think I'll just send you my rankings privately with no commentary. If you don't want to count that for points, no problem. I just want to have fun with this, and not upset anyone if at all possible. That's not why we're here.

I guess the question here really is: Is there a better way to do voting?

I came up with this system because of problems with some of the other systems, but, frankly the participation levels are not high enough to see if the new system is going to work or not.

I tried to make this as inclusive as possible, but for some reason, there are very few willing to toss their hat in the ring. I understand that I have made some mistakes, particularly in regards to how difficult the first couple of challenges were, and it is very apparent even after one try that everyone really likes doing trivia.

I guess I am wondering at this point what we could do to make this better...

Possible ideas include:
1. Get it back to Disney and Universal - this website has a lean to that direction and anything else is denying the audience what it craves.
2. Dump the weekly challenges
3. Dump everything except the trivia
4. Give this all back to Tim, let him be the game master and quit treading on his toes.

I am open to any and all comments.....particularly those flies on the wall that are not participating.....what would make you want to join in?

From Anthony O'Neal

I wasn't upset in any way! I was explaining why my report wasn't as complete. . . simply, I wanted to participate, but found myself wanting for time this past couple of weeks. Reading it now, I can see perhaps why it would come across that way.

I didn't feel you were belittling me at all. I kind of expected that sort of response, to be honest. I apologize if my response came across like that. This is a fun game, it's supposed to be fun, and if someone can't handle criticism, they really shouldn't participate.

Don't ever feel like I'm taking your comments or criticisms personally. I assure you that I'm not. I've moderated and been a member of other forums for years. . . believe me, I've had much worse things said about and to me than anything I've ever seen on this site (who knew people that kept aquariums had such filthy mouths?).

In short, bring it on! LOL!

I honestly wish I could follow this more and participate. My own opinion would be to move forward with only the trivia. It seemed that there it had the most participation and interest. It kind of stinks that lately there may be a lack of interest in these theme park design games!

Ah man, I love these theme park design games. I guess I am really sometimes the only one who really posts, I wish there were others aside from James and I who would step up to the plate.

Nothing I like better than imagineering on the side...however, as others have noted, this is the busiest time of the year at work. Add in three kids, a needy wife, and the constant demands of defending guy-liner users everywhere...well, there's not much time left for fun.

But I do like reading everyone's ideas. And I know who I will hire if I ever build my own theme park!

James, you're not still mad about that flat carnival ride park I proposed, are you? You know, the one I dedicated to you and your tireless promotion of the importance of flat spinners to American amusement park culture? Boy, some people sure hold a grudge...;+)

From Nick Markham

Jeff, I think what you need to do is just keep posting ideas. The best part about this contest is that anyone can join in or back out at any time. Eventually, when we near times like Thanksgiving or Christmas, people will eventually come. For now, I will make sure to post an idea as much as possible, and it looks like James might be doing so too, at least some of the time.

Thanks for the comments, and keep them coming if you have anything else to say.....I am always open to new ideas.....

Sorry about taking so long to look at these comments.....was working on finalizing a new trivia challenge.....should be posting it any time now.....just need to proof it up just a bit....

^That's good to hear, since we both have last names that nobody knows how to pronouce properly. We'd better stick together!
