Which dark ride or movie has the best gotcha?

The Mummy's fake ending? The dragon at Forbidden Journey? The toad at Shrek?

I would go with Splash Mountain's indoor's drop; I didn't see it coming (too dark) and it was a big surprise.

Although nothing is "jumping out" at me right now, this is a nice idea for a thread, Daniel.

There is a loud horn/bright light combo at the end of Dark Knight that gets me. But that hasn't happened too often, if you get my drift....

Incidentally, next year's Dark Knight Rises is filming today and tomorrow a few blocks from my office here in Newark.

The part in Poseidon's Fury
where he say’s “Look” and points in back of everybody… That blast of light blinded me…

I have to say the 18 wheeler on Test Track got me a few times. First tow trips, I jumped in my seat at that.

Swiss Family Treehouse.

Let me explain.

People think it's an elaborate queue for the Jungle Cruise or something cooler, and I find it funny to watch people's reactions to it "That was it? Where's the ride? I waited this long for nothing?"

Gotcha!

I would say FJ didn't see the dragon coming and some ghost monsters in FJ really suprised me.

From Fred Koury
Posted November 3, 2011 at 6:31 PM
The dragon on fj didn't get me the first few times, but the last time I rode it the frigging thing was right in my face and got me pretty good lol.

Jaws at night still gets me when I sit on the edge even though I know the stupid shark is coming. Only at night though

I was blown away when the entire room disappears into the ceiling (in pitch blackness) at Poseidon's Fury to reveal the huge finale auditorium.

I had to look up and around to figure out how they actually did it instead of paying attention to the final battle. Very cool use of misdirection.

The Dementors on Forbidden Journey really got my 9 year old daughter the first time, then again, so did the dragon and the spiders. I was just taking in all the detail on my first ride.

Getting spit in the eye by a spider on FJ. Didn't see that coming!

Spit in the eye by a spider that never happen to me.

I have to agree with Poseidon's Fury's last room. It's a shame the final battle itself doesn't come close to matching the ingenuity and visual power of the room transformation.

Dinosaur has a few good gotcha moments as well.

Here's one of the most annoying ones: the end of Monster Mansion at Six Flags Over Georgia - it's a clever little "uh-oh, maybe we haven't really gotten away moment" that's punctuated by a friggin' air horn. Completely unnecessary and out of character with the rest of the show. A growling sound effect would have been perfect, but instead they went with the type of cheap effect you'll find in any traveling fair's spook house ride. Of course, in the spook house ride, usually the airhorn is the only thing that works...

Lucky you, Giovanni. It burned.

From Skipper Adam
Posted November 6, 2011 at 5:22 PM
The spider really burned? So that and the Dementors sucking your spirit or what not both don't work already?

From Andy Milito
Posted November 6, 2011 at 5:35 PM
No, I meant the spit. It burned when it got in my eye.

From Skipper Adam
Posted November 6, 2011 at 5:45 PM
LOL I see. I don't know why it burned, it's just water.

From Manny Rodriguez
Posted November 6, 2011 at 5:49 PM
I know why it burns I think it is because your eye already has water in your eye so if you get more water into your eye it burns and there also might or most probable that it has chlorine ) and that was Manny's answers to hard questions I'm praying I did that correctly or a science and grammar argue ment would happen lol

From Skipper Adam
Posted November 6, 2011 at 6:11 PM
Manny, water is the thing you rinse your eyes out with if you get something in it. Adding water to eyes doesn't burn. As for chlorine, that's a good guess, but I think it's just tap water, not sitting water somewhere.

Uh-Oh, Manny's referring to himself in the third person..we're in trouble.

I'm sorry I forgot to put tap water just one of my little mistakes dear mr gallgher was that a joke or a insult??

From Mike Gallagher

I'm surprised nobody has listed the trick ending to The Mummy at Universal Florida. Just when you thought the ride was over...

From Skipper Adam
Posted November 7, 2011 at 4:32 PM
I'd say the false ending isn't too convincing. It's cool, but you have to be pretty thick to not notice right away its not the real ending.

Hmmm....best gotcha moment on a ride?

I know it might sound lame...but the incomming train on Mr. Toad's Wild Ride at Disneyland in Aneheim really surprised me the first time I got on...and again when I rode it two years back....=_=;
Guess I'm easily surprised...

From Skipper Adam

Nope, Mr. Toad's is a good one. The Evil Queen spinning around on Snow White's Scary Adventure got her, and she was a rough burly Scottish woman who loves horror movies.

From Brandon Mendoza

There are a lot of good ones already mentioned, so I'll try not to repeat any.

I like USH's T-Rex reveal. Good distraction too!

Ghost Galaxy's 1st lift and the end as well.

It's Hard to Be A Bug's post finale surprise(s).

The backside of water? :)

Revenge of the Mummy at USF has two of the best in my opinion: 1)the fake ending and 2)the launch up the hill after the backwards section which transitions the ride to a roller coaaster.

My local amusement park on Long Island, Adventureland, used to have a haunted house (I'm not sure if it is still there)with a nice "gotcha"--towards the end of the ride, water was unexpectedly dropped on the rider's head.

Andrew,

Curious...sprinkle, spray, or drench?

I won tickets to Adventureland a couple of years ago, but never got there.

From Andrew Carrieri

Mike:
It was a drop or two of water from what I remember-nothing excessive. But it was pitch black when it happened leading to a startling moment. It's been ten years since I last went on the ride though so I don't remember exactly.

On another note, you didn't miss much by not going. The park is fun for younger kids but if you've been to any major theme park, there isn't anything special except for perhaps the ferris wheel-you ride in family sized baloons overlooking the highway rather than in the one person carnival-style ferris wheel seats. Besides that, the park is a bunch of midway rides and games, a flume, a pirate ship, swings, and a couple of mini coasters.

Actually moving into the hallway in the fourth dimension scene at DHS's Tower of Terror. Total surprise for me the first time.

The fake ending in Mummy is a classic, of course.

It's pretty silly but the last firework that explodes at the end of Soarin' always catches me off guard. I always think the ride is over when the big group of fireworks go off and then - BAM! one more which usually makes me jump. My family mocks me to no end for falling for this every time!

From James Trexen

I'd say the golf ball on Soarin was what really unexpected. I was enjoying the ride and it totally looked like it was gonna hit.

In the Simpson's, when giant Maggie uses your car as a pacifier with the baby powder smell added is always a kick.

Almost crashing into the garbage truck on Spiderman is surprising since it's not a movie scene but a real prop got me the first few times.

The launch on Rock n Roller Coaster is a great rush.

The other best "gotcha" is the Dark Knight at Six Flags.. because you thought the ride was going to be awesome... and it wasn't.

I'd say Bugs Life has some of the best gotchas..... if no one has told you beforehand...... but if you have kids who are freaked out by bugs or might be startled you might want to tell them before taking them in. My great neice who thought Expedition Everest was so much fun was scared by Bugs Life.
