How about a twilight area at Universal Orlando?

Universal Orlando: With the new harry potter atraction being so popular, and with universal and disney trying to one up each other, I thought this might be a good idea for us or ioa and it wouldgive universal a big bost with twilight and harry potter.

You dont have to be a fan just would it work? The Cullen house, Forks High. Pics with Alice and Jasper, Edward and Bella. If Disney got this idea it would cancel out Harry Potter. Any ride ideas or is this not a good idea? First post and discussion, thaanks for the comments in advance.

Way to welcome a new poster, Dom.

Shannon, welcome. Dom greeted you rather rudely, but we're not all like that. Although I'm not a Twilight fan either (unless it's followed by the word "Zone") I could see an attraction based on it being successful for a short period of time. But I don't think it would have "legs." If it features Kristen Stewart in 3D, I'm there. I don't see the property lending itself to a full fledged land, much less competing with Harry Potter for the tourist dollar.

You're all being asses. If Disney could afford it, this could be the PERFECT replacement for Wonders of Life. I can't wait to see the Twilight version of "The Making of Me."

No, seriously. Go read the Wiki article on Breaking Dawn that describes the birthing scene. Now just imagine it with Martin Short narrating it.

Harsh responses, whats with the dude saying banned from the site. I wasnt even talking as a fan, im not, strictly from a money perspective. Harry Potter is doing well, and if universal execs thought they could make money off of it they would put anything up. This seems like something disney would do, and with all their millions of teenage fans, thay would get legions of girls to come see it. You may not like twilight,, like I said, im not a fan, just an idea on how to make money. Not a fan of harry potter either, but it was a good business decision. Im pro universal, have more fun there than at disney. But if Disney thought they could make money off of it they would build it, universal could use more stuff for younger people too. At disney, a little girl could go to cindarellas castle, then go to the cullen house to get a picture with edward. Disney would clean up. Last movie alone made nearly 1 billion worldwide, dosent matter if you hate twilight, lots of daughters would beg their parents to spend money to take them to see it.

This is such a niche audience for Twilight. The movies did okay, but in reality most people know the movies and books are bad unless you're blinded by teen girlyness. Twilight is a short term fad that doesn't encompass a large audience.

If Disney was to use Twilight, they would have to fit it in The Studios, if that would make any sense. But the rights for Twilight would be different than HP. Twilight people care only for the characters and not the Highschool or house because they are not special. When you use the image of a real actor or actress then there is a huge amount of royalties involved, both with the character's name and image. So even a meet and greet probably isn't fiscally worth it.

If Disney was going to use an outside fictional universe, Avatar makes far more sense.

Hi Shannon - welcome!

I am certainly not a fan of Twilight but I dont see it having the longevity to warrant the cost of a whole new zone in a park somewhere.
As a money spinner for its studio I am sure its fantastic and has a lot of spin off merch etc, but I havent heard anything to warrant its status as a 'classic'.
Also those characters are so specific looking (ie fugly) :-) that casting would be a nightmare if there were to be in-person meet and greets.
I'm not an Avatar fan either and think its a bit of a bad idea in concept (we'll see in practice eventually) but its much easier to have those....erm...blue guys? (Technical speak there!)

However, sticking with the genre I would love a park (any one) to have a 'horror' movie type zone incorporating werewolves etc. USF do Halloween so well, why not have a year round attraction added near to Horror Make Up Show, for example. (Veering off topic a bit there)

Really Dom how about Dead Space ride Hmm oh and I did not. Come up With CoD the ride also South park and Family guy are not uh.... kid friendly or family friendly Dead Space I can see for HHN And CoD a laser tag kinda thing and family guy and south park well........ In a adult park that's what I think.

As soneone who was subjected to the films and constant batttering about reading the books (never did) I can say there is a market for SOMETHING Twilight saga related. They are very much in the publics mind right now, more so that Lilo and Stitch for example and whilst the film was good, its not a Disney Classic in my opinon but it has its own themed ride and takes up quite a chunk of the area in which its placed.

A photo session with lookalikes? Maybe. I doubt whether that would be enough, Forks High? Again, not really. A coaster? Maybe, but Wolves and Dragons not really in the air, if they made it a duelling ground based one with lots of tight turns and little height it could work but Low height = lots of ground space which doesnt exist right now.

You have to remember Im not a fan of Twilight nor was I overly excited to hear of a whole land dedicated to Avatar so perhaps im missing the bigger picture. Twilight in theory MIGHT make a quick buck. Quick being the operative word. There isnt enough ride ideas in the films that I know of to make it work, certainly not a land and why pay for a lookie like photo when you can go to a photo booth in the mall, pay like $5 and get the real actor/ress image with you.

Maybe you should think about the upcoming TPA4 and put your ideas across there, maybe......or not. Your call. Just saying is all.

+1 to Karly..short, and not so sweet! And, I may be mistaken, but I think she's a young girl, maybe a teenager, which would be Twilight's target audience. So let's not assume that all park-goers of a certain gender and age will be tripping over themselves to visit the attraction.

Welcome to the site!!

I agree that while Twillight is popular, the demographic is quite small in terms of general appeal.

I just don't see the long term appeal of a Twillight area. It lacks the (adult) popularity of harry potter & seems like it even falls short critically when compared to something like the hunger games.

When I think of potential franchises with longevity like a star wars or star trek, Twilight seems like within a few years down the raod, the fan frenzy would really cool down.

Welcome Shannon! I've thought about this idea before, but it doesn't have the fan base of harry potter. Like others have said, I don't see the longevity either, but maybe a small attraction could be built to last 5 or 10 years. However, in 10 years, most people will think of it as something rather stupid and I think(maybe not) that the fan base will have evaporated by then.

First off, Welcome Shannon.

Someone must have deleted Dom's reply entirely because I can't see it....

Maybe the next head to head should be "Should Dom's IP be banned from TPI" - Yes or No

There are a lot of intelligent adults that post in here who spend thousands of dollars visiting various theme parks and resorts. There are a lot of heated debates on the Disney vs Universal subject but it remains civil for the most part.

Robert doesn't tolerate any name calling or profanity in the threads, which is why a lot of us like to visit the site and post regularly.

The Dom thing is starting to wear on me, so I will be visiting less frequently, which is unfortunate because I like to read up on everything that is going on and participate in the discussions.

Sorry Shannon but I think that adding Twilight to Universal isn't the greatest idea...........welcome to TPI by the way.

What I do think, though, is that The Hunger Games might be considered at one of the Parks sometime soon. Whether or not that's a good idea remains to be seen. Potter will be looking over his shoulder at this one.

Wait a second, if you were going to add Twilight into IOA it would be perfect, you could get Blade over from Marvel's Super Hero Island to sort out the Vampire problem. He wouldn't have to worry about the sparkling becuase of his shades. Sorted!
How about getting Buffy in on the act. She and the Scooby gang could take care of that annoying wizard too!

From Mike Gallagher

Stuart, if you're gonna have Blade and Buffy, you better include Peter Vincent in the mix. Although that name may mean nothing to many here, trust me...he needs to be involved (even if he might not be particularly successful in the eradication process :(

Rob, while I am a Hunger Games fan myself, I can't imagine it at a park. The source material is a bit too adult: teenagers killing other teenagers (for those haven't read; and if you haven't, shame on you) and just doesn't lend itself to a ride well.

If Twilight went into Universal Studios they could have Van Helsing help sort out the vampire menace.

Sorry, Shannon, was trying to think of how Twilight could work at a theme park, but the only place "romance" works is at Disney and that's to sell princess-fare to the wee ones. Don't see Bella in that role. Don't feel bad, there's a group of us dying for LOTR-representation at the parks and we get a fair share of ridicule too. ;)

I don't think Hunger Games is very adaptable to Disney, or even Universal. I saw it at a special media only screening a few days ago. It is excellent. Really what Sci Fi should be about. Not much in special effects, but the story & acting are awesome. Also,it has one of the saddest scenes I've ever seen in a movie. Not a dry eye in the viewing group. It's going to do boffo business & it will probably have legs. But, in my opinion, it's subject matter is not something a theme park would want to tackle.

From Rob P
Posted March 22, 2012 at 4:50 AM
I do take your points about The Hunger Games. I confess to not knowing too much about it......only it being much vaunted as something potentially as big as Harry Potter.
Not convinced about the arguments against it on the grounds of violence though. If Disney can tolerate a young girl's beating heart being removed in Snow White it might perceive the odd student's demise as a necessary evil. I was thinking more of a shooting gallery with multiple disciplines but you're probably right.

I think TWILIGHT would work great at Universal. The movies ($2.5B in sales so far) and books (120M+ copies sold) are insanely popular so the crowds would definitely come. Also, Universal Creative has the talent to craft great horror sets as we have seen during Halloween. The one argument seems to be that TWILIGHT is a fad that will go away in a few years, however the longevity of the theme is not an issue because very few Universal attractions last more than ten years anyway!!! And, once the license runs out or wears out, Universal can alter the "land" to feature their backlog of great B&W horror flicks and finally showcase some of the classic "monsters" of the past.

Perfect!

POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

CONTINUE READING @ YOUR OWN RISK

Well Rob, since it looks like you don't know how gruesome these deaths can be, I'll give you an idea. You've spears through the abdomen, arrows to the neck, and someone being eaten alive by mutilated wolves.

SPOILERS END HERE

Now, there's no doubt in my mind that the series has gained quite a following on par with that of Harry Potter or Twilight. But if the above doesn't convince you of the graphic violence, I don't know what will.

James R, curious what can of Twilight atrractions you would come up with. Not arguing you're wrong, but I really tried and couldn't come up with anything. A motion simulator dark ride? Stage-show maybe?

Mark, there could probably be a drop ride called Edwards Bite of Life, where you're in the situation of Bella losing her life. aAs her heart rate drops, you plummet up and down until Edward saves you with his teeth. And James, are you sure there's no arrows to the knee? ;)

From Mark Fairleigh

Points well made James T.

I don't believe I've seen anyone being eaten alive on Toy Story Mania so it probably would be inappropriate to use the Hunger Games as a Disney ride topic. Alton Towers might though.

Heck, they could build a low to the ground speed coaster like Cheetah Hunt themed to wolves, or a dive coaster for vamps, or even a dueling coaster for the two! Lots of options. I think the attraction design should be generic vampires and werewolves, but then brand it to Twilight. That way the land can easily be retrofitted if the license doesn't work out long term.
