Cant wait to see ideas from the contestants i love TPA for one reason in the words of Spongebob "IMAGINATION"

I thought the Hansel and Gretel idea was truly really good. However, what age group could this target? Some teens might find it kind of tame and not very cool/thrilling. Kids might get scarred.

Thanks for the positive feedback Andrew! I haven't really though over what the ride's target age group. I imagined this ride as a "family" experience for adults and older children.

^Your welcome. I truly thought it was a pretty nice idea. And I guess an Older Child/Adult could find something cool.

Wonder if the single-park change to the format is going to have a major effect on people's posting strategies... There's traditionally been two ways to play.

1)Post as late as you can. Noone can steal your ideas this way, and you get to see what everyone else is holding.. Running the risk you accidentally sail past deadline...

2)Post fairly early. This puts your "claim" on an idea (yes, people can post similar ideas, but theres a psychological difference between being "first" and "second" with an idea - on the reader, and yourself), but prevents you improving it as you see others entries....

With the single park format, and us all having relatively different concepts the advantage in 2 isn't so strong... So I imagine we'll tend to have more later posters this year.

Having thought of, written and then evaluated one proposal I have had to start again, this singular theme park is proving to be a right pain! Why did I have to go with Lucas?!?! Seemed to be so easy but now........ Oh well. Ill get a revised idea up tonight/tomorrow I expect.

From Matt Babiak
Posted June 7, 2013 at 4:11 AM
Exactly Chad. I cannot tell a lie, I made significant progress then revised it after seeing the first two posts. Doing it later helps you see what's in store. It's also the very first real submission, so there's not a solid clue of what everyone is going to be up against.

Whoever did the Land Before Time ride did a good job! Despite the fact that I didn't grow up with this movie, I found this ride a welcome alternative to a park that is mostly Star Wars and Indiana Jones. Send this idea to Universal (they made the film)!

Thank you Tim! Yeah, I was definitely going for the "Spaceship Earth" vibe, but the second I posted I began regretting the "tour through the galaxy" premise... Which probably isn't a good thing. I'm curious as to what the other judges have got to say.

From Alan Hiscutt
Posted June 7, 2013 at 5:04 PM
Thanks for the review, I was a tad worried that with such an adult audience, a kiddy ride may get overlooked, thankfully I dont think that will happen. I suppose when I went through the ride in my head i did kinda go to quickly but its in black and white now, cant change that, perhaps more like 15 would have an acceptable time scale but there you go.

Having looked at the Disney filmography in some detail I was very surprised to see that Lucasfilm were involved, and yes, Universal were the distributer but I promise you, Lucas was involved. And Ill admit, the Star Wars/Indy temptation was kinda immense but I am glad I stayed away from the obvious.

I hope to get my submission in tonight. Although I've known what I was going to do since about two days after the challenge was announced, I've been so busy with school that I didn't get a chance to start writing until today. It should still be decent, but unfortunately I doubt it will be as good as I had hoped. Next week's should be much better, since my last day of class for the year is on Wednesday. (although I have no idea what I'm going to do yet).

Note to anyone considering it: Don't be an Engineering Major if you're not prepared to put in 30-40 hours per week in addition to class time.

Brains: The Ride

The ride building is themed to an outdoor mall with a large sporting goods store as the centerpiece. In the near distance we hear small arms fire and distant gurgles of pain. This ride is located in the Brains Land section of the park.

The entrance of the ride is via a long dark alley between the Brains restaurant and the Brains Mercantile Exchange. As you lurch slowly through the queue, you hear sounds of human meat bags softly whispering in terror as they attempt to hide out from the inescapable hunger of our kind. The queue is somewhat dark and gloomy, exactly how we like it.

Toward the end of the queue, there is a long room showing movies on the proper way to put together an attack to get inside the sporting goods store, showing different diagrams about different formations and where the secret entrances are. These videos are also supplemented with first aid tapes designed to show you how to sew your arm back on and continue the attack.

Leaving the war room/film room you enter the boarding area of the ride.

The Ride Vehicles
The ride vehicles are the standard “Scoop” vehicles that Spiderman, Transformers, and Mystic Manor all use, with an open air design. The Scoops are designed after the front bucket of a dump truck, making it easy to load and unload the vehicle. There are no seatbelts, because if you haven’t the strength to hold on, you are no good to the revolution. The vehicles are trackless and the different vehicles run down different paths. Since the show never stops, vehicles will come into the main area at different moments and will select their paths based on the needs of the collective. Toward the beginning of the attack the vehicles will stay toward the perimeter, while further into the attack, the vehicles will get very close indeed to the brain containers and their bunkers.

Scene 1
This scene is at the beginning of our glorious quest for brains. The vehicles stay back a ways from the humans. Occasionally one vehicle will surge forward and take all of the firepower from the sporting goods store before fading back into the shadows. A different vehicle will then surge forward from the other side. This type of attack keeps the brain buckets on their toes, guessing where the next attack is going to come from and wasting precious ammunition on scattered and random attacks. This is designed to scare the prey more than make an attempt to break through.

Scene 2
This scene is the next step toward our glorious quest for brains. The vehicles start attacking from separate areas forcing the defenders to split their forces in order to hold back the attack. The vehicles will suddenly surge forward in groups forcing their way through to the front of the building before pulling back and letting the next wave push through. This attack is designed to deplete the ammunition supply of the brain carriers while our forces retreat to the back and are reassembled, sewn back together, and readied for the next attack wave.

Scene 3
This scene is the final step toward our glorious quest for brains. The vehicles attack straight through to the sporting goods store, smashing everything and eating whatever brains you run across. Typically the vehicles in the front will pass the brains that they find back to the troops further back in favor of fresher brains that are inside the sporting goods store. A few vehicles will take the secret route into the sporting goods store and are automatically at the front of the buffet line for fresh adrenalin-filled brains. The rest of the vehicles will smash through the front windows and then unload all of the passengers for the buffet.

As you are exiting the ride, there are displays of Rolaids and Tums, with a convenient kiosk just past the exit.

I am so hungry right now…

Normally, I'd say there should be a vote, but I think given that it is the first round, not all the judges were able to review the proposals, and there were a couple drops anyway, maybe it'd be better to not vote this round and do a double elimination later if necessary. Of course, I'm not a judge, and it's up to them to decide what to do.

Looks like there will be some pretty strong competition this year. I need to start working on the next challenge ASAP...I have no idea what I'm going to do as I never planned on having a 4D movie attraction in my park this year.

From AJ Hummel

Bryce, you're not the only one who's slipping. I'm not doing quite as well this year, and based on my current performance I'm guessing I'll get kicked out before the final three. Granted, it's partly because I chose a very difficult concept and partly because I've been busy with school, so it will be interesting to see what happens next as I'm done for this school year and I have a couple very solid ideas for the walk through and roller coaster challenges. Even though I think it's unlikely I'd win again, I'm certainly not going to give up.

It's too early to make predictions about how everyone will do, but I'm going to try using the same system I did last year and see how close my guesses are. My pick for winner last year (David L.) made it all the way to round nine, so hopefully I'll guess a finalist this time. I'll wait another challenge or two and then start putting my excel sheet together.

From Dominick D

From Tim W
Posted June 19, 2013 at 3:00 PM
Tyler, I am not entirely sure what you are getting at or what you mean by your question.

If you are referencing the current Theme Park Apprentice style, developing ideas for a singular theme park, I believe that this season has raised the bar and made the competition more challenging. To go back to a previous state for the sake of easiness would be redundant. While I cannot guarantee the current competition format will last forever, I currently have no intentions to revert back to the old style. Over the course of seven competitions, of various lengths and difficulties, I have learned from and made mistakes in the competition. While this competition style may be disliked by some, it was something I needed to accomplish and enact. What will come in the future of TPA will come in the future.

From AJ Hummel
Posted June 19, 2013 at 3:59 PM
I really like the current competition style, as it is a lot more open-ended and lets you come up with whatever you can imagine. I found some of the TPA 4 challenges quite difficult simply due to the restrictions placed on them, even though the basics were not complicated at all. For example, having never been to EPCOT, I found it very difficult to redo one of the Future World pavilions, but had the challenge been to add a new pavilion, I think it would have been significantly easier since there would be fewer restriction (basically, you'd just have to scale it simiar to existing ones and not copy anything). With the current format, you're free to do pretty much anything you want, but each attraction is like a piece of a puzzle, and they all have to fit together in some way. If you want a dueling, multi-launched roller coaster you can add one, but you need to have a reason why a dueling, multi-launched roller coaster fits in the park. Coming up with good attractions is not easy, but getting everything to work together is the real challenge.

That being said, I do think it would be fun to have a winter mini-season every so often (perhaps every other year) where you get to design attractons for existing parks. It would be a good way to keep both formats going so everyone is (hopefully) satisfied. Plus, I think it would be somewhat difficult to come up with a whole park concept in a month long mini-season, and working in a single land for the whole time would probably be a bit too restrictive.

From Dominick D
Posted June 19, 2013 at 7:58 PM
Yeah, honestly the nature restrictions made it a bit too hard.

From James Koehl
Posted June 20, 2013 at 3:39 AM
The basic premise of this competition is that you are trying to be chosen as "THE NEXT THEME PARK APPRENTICE" by being given assignments by our version of Donald Trump, spelled "T-I-M" to design specific attractions for a theme/amusement park. In real life it is rare-to-unheard of to be given a blank check and be allowed to design anything you want anywhere you want. You would be told such specifics as "it must have this theme"; "You have this much space"; "It must go in this location"; "You have $$$ to spend and not a penny more".

Each season of TPA has been designed to be different, with its own strengths and challenges. Each competitor is going to find portions of these challenges just that- challenging- while others will know exactly what they are going to design and do a splendid job. Some hated the "green" theme of TPA4, while others reveled in it.

If this was real life, whether you like the theme or not is irrelevant. You are required to design an attraction that you are hired to create, and you must convince the people with the bucks (or in this case the votes) that it is the greatest attraction ever created, even if you personally would never set foot in it. Many competitors have stated that they want to design attractions for Disney, Universal, etc.- what better way to get the feel than in here, being allowed to turn on the creative juices and learn just how hard it can be- and how much fun?!

Example: Jeff Elliott designed a themed restaurant for TPA3 Challenge 3 called "The Muppet Show Dinner Theatre". He won that challenge with 20% of the vote, and that was against nine other competitors (I only had 11% and came in 3rd). It was a wonderful concept, funny, detailed, a restaurant that I would love to experience. He hates themed restaurants! He told me that he has never been to a themed restaurant in a theme park in his life- they waste his time and takes time away from riding coasters. He got past his personal dislike for the challenge theme and created a winning entry.

That is what the heart and soul of TPA is- getting past your personal likes and dislikes and creating a winning proposal that will get you chosen as the next Theme Park Apprentice. Is it difficult? Yes. Can it be frustrating? Yes, especially when you just can't come up with the perfect idea. Is it fun? If it isn't, then you aren't doing it right.

The judges have been discussing how challenging this competition has been for us. Let me make it clear that we do NOT discuss our critiques or rankings amongst ourselves before we post them. We all have agreed that the level of quality in the proposals in this competition has been outstanding, especially this early in the competition. It seems obvious to us that each competitor is taking this seriously, creating amazing proposals and working hard to get the details right. We are proud of all the work you have been doing. Keep it up, work hard, have fun doing it, and this season of TPA will easily be the best one yet!

From Alan Hiscutt
Posted June 20, 2013 at 4:37 AM
James, If I may ask for something of a "behind the Apprentice" type segment here, we all know that the judges do not discuss their critiques before they are posted, anyone who doubts this need only look at the contrast between Tim's opinion of my Willow and the other two judges, very different and picked up on different aspects, but I digress. How do the judges agree on the ranking? Do you score each one out of ten and then add the numbers? do you have a discussion and hash it out? Does anyone have a final say?
Im just intrigued.

From James Koehl
Posted June 20, 2013 at 4:53 AM
Good question, one deserving an answer. First of all, we never discuss our rankings ahead of time, nor do we discuss our critiques before they are posted. You read them when I do. We do list our choices from top to bottom, then send them to either Tim, Andy or Jeff Elliott, past judge and technical advisor, and they enter them into a spread sheet that averages out the rankings. This system works, is fair and takes into account the very thing you mentioned- each judge sees things differently. Nobody has the final say, nobody attempts to convince another judge of changing their rankings, and the only time we would ever fire a competitor (other than for flagrantly violating the rules) would be if we all agree their proposal is at the bottom of all of our rankings. Even then, as we progress later through the competition, we will probably still have voting between the bottom two or three proposals. I hope that everyone recognizes the fact that we want this to be completely fair, impartial, and above all things, fun!
If any of the other judges want to step in with their comments, or if I didn't explain something very well, please step up!

Tyler, I apologize I was not able to respond to the earlier thread created on Water Park Apprentice 2.

I regret to inform you that the simple answer to your question of moderating a competition of Water Park Apprentice 2 is no. I can not relinquish my creative rights to the Theme Park Apprentice or the Water Park Apprentice series. Moderating both of these competitions has been an extremely large responsibility filled with development, challenge writing, score tabulation, judging, and the occasional headache. However, I feel an obligation to maintain and uphold the dignity and status of these competitions for as long as they shall last. While the contests may be sparse in frequency, I believe the lapse between each of the competitions allows contestants to enhance their creative juices and improve their performance. While I cannot restrict the creation of a similar theme park design competition, I will neither participate nor provide endorsement. I would highly recommend developing a competition with stark differences to avoid plagiarizing Theme Park Apprentice.

Alan, I understand and share your concerns, but a part of me is getting the feeling that everyone is taking this competition so seriously that they are working hard on their proposals and don't want to post until they are sure it is perfect. It is making it tough on the judges to suddenly have to read these long, majorly-detailed proposals and come up with critiques in a short amount of time, but hey, it's worth it. The proposals so far this competition series have been amazing!

Tyler, I am not sure how long you have been following the Theme Park Apprentice series, but as one who has been actively involved as a reader, competitor and now judge, I want to be sure you understand that this little on-line contest has had an important influence on many lives. Friendships have been formed, careers have been influenced and creative talents have been discovered, all because Tim came up with an idea that found a home here in TPI. I have known Tim through TPA for years, and the pride he takes in his creation cannot be put into words. This is his baby, his contribution to TPI, and if he seems to be possessive of it and defensive of it, that is because he has earned that right. I also know that the last thing he wants is to exclude anyone from participating, because he knows how much it has influenced so many people on many levels. But that participation must be in the framework of the competition series, and that is with Tim as the “Donald Trump”, the master of the competition.
Theme Park Apprentice, at its core, tries to inspire creativity. If you want to show that you have that creative spark and talent, there are two ways to do so: 1) show TPI by creating something original, something unique, something that you can be proud of because you thought of it first. We don’t need another Theme Park Apprentice competition clone. TPA is always going to be refined, tuned, perhaps made more challenging in future competitions, but always improving, and 2) compete as a competitor. Show TPI that you have that creative spark and talent by competing in the next competition, whatever and whenever it may be. Show that you have the maturity, the understanding of fair-play and most importantly, the ability to create well-conceived, well-written and original ideas.
Tyler, you have an enthusiasm that can take you far, and I suspect that there is a deep pool of untapped potential that you are just now discovering. Keep that enthusiasm under control, develop those potential talents and I am sure you can create something for Theme Park Insider as influential as Theme Park Apprentice is, something unique, something you can be proud to call your own.

Don't worry, my walkthrough will be up this afternoon (probably by 5 P.M.). The theme has been constant, as I actually picked it out when I did the audition, but I've just done a half dozen format changes (it's gone from a simple guided walkthrough to a hybrid of a guided tour, a self-guided museum, and a character encounter all combined into a single attraction) and I often don't start writing until a couple days before the due date.

Next week, my roller coaster will be up by Thursday, as I've actually got a rough draft from a couple years ago for that challenge (a dragon-themed roller coaster was actually the first TPA style proposal I wrote, but it was for fun to see if this would be something I'd enjoy competing in).

Thanks everyone for the great feedback! I'm surprised that I'm ranked up so high for a first timer. I really though The Master Sorcerer was going to be poorly reviewed. Also, is their anyone you had in mind to play Merlin and the Sorcerer. I was thinking Jay Baruchel as Merlin, but he was in another Disney sorcerer movie.

So I have just spent about 10 hours working on a proposal for a duelling X-wing V TIE coaster only to find someone out in internet land has already done it, and its very very impressive. It has many elements that I wanted for my own but I have a question for the judges: Can I still use this idea or considering just how similar my idea was to this chaps, should I abandon and start over? I dont want to actually get to writing my proposal only to find you guys say "Thats an awful lot like this thing I saw online"
I wont post anything here but if the judges want to see this amazing coaster plan, then i'll be only to happy to send you what I have found.

Can someone direct me to a link or thread on formatting, specifically embedding pictures? Sorry; I'm new to this. Thank you.

Not the results I was expecting mostly because I tried to crank the pitch out ASAP after vacation. Don't worry everyone, I promise you'll like next week's pitch.

@ Joseph M

What I do is the following:
1: Open a Flickr account if you dont have one already - its free.
2: Upload your images on there
3: Select the "Share by URL" option. This will give you some code you can cut and copy.
4: You can post the code as is, however it will make the image a link in additon to an image. If you want to just have an image remove the bits of the code that look like " " and ""

Joseph, you can also use Photobucket to upload photos. All you have to do is sign up (like Flickr, it's free), upload your images, and obtain the HTML address for that image (it's usually to the right of the image). You can also edit them, which I found useful in previous seasons.

Christopher, the reason you were at the bottom was because of the late posting- we decided that the three late posters would go to the bottom this week, but to not have a vote this week and combine this week and next week into a double elimination.

I have said this before and I will say it again- the level of competition in TPA5 is really astounding! I go over-and-over my rankings, reading and rereading the proposals, trying to find the one thing that will move a challenger up or down in my rankings. It could be something as simple as a misspelled word or grammar error. That is how close these proposals have become in quality. You are all making this extremely hard on the judges! Good for you!!!

As Tim said, nobody is out of this yet by a l-o-o-n-g way! Every one of you at the bottom can certainly survive the double elimination, and those of you at the top? Don't get cocky!

Jeff Elliott posted this on 5-31-2012. It explains how to post images. He suggested I repost this to help anyone still having issues.

"Posting Pictures
The best way to do pictures is to grab a free account at PhotoBucket.com and upload your pictures there. Once you have uploaded your pictures, mouse over the image and click on HTML code on the pop-up. Copy that directly into your post where you want it.

If your image is too wide you will need to limit the width down. For Photobucket, right before where it says border="0" put in this statement: width=450. If you need your image even smaller, decrease that 450 number in proportion to how much smaller you need it. Check and edit. Check again and edit again until it is right."

It's a shame I have to do this, but I'm dropping out. I don't have the time this year, but next year I'll be trying out for a judge.

Thank god this website is in Pacific time. I'm doing most of mine tonight, sadly. I was on vacation, got back Friday and then I've worked both last night and tonight. So, this may not be my most detailed work yet...

Joseph, you should resize your pictures... It's bothering me, hahahaha.

Lol.

I hope my submission made it in time. It was originally posted at 11:59, but I tried to correct a few errors (and failed at that) & after hitting the editing key, the time read 12:01 am.

With that being said, I'm not happy with this submission at all, & a tad annoyed with myself for even submitting this.

The numerous punctation errors alone warrant a low ranking, but there are alot of other problems with my entry as well ....I can honestly say I dropped the ball on this one & trying to finish this at the very last minute after work is no excuse & my own fault.

If I make it to the next round, my next entry will be a lot better!!!

I know how you feel Jay, but in something like this its better to stay quiet (at least until the judging is over) rather than bring it to everyones attention... The judges may only notice some things now you've pointed them out.

Thanks Bryce!

And you're right Chad, that's a smart way of looking at it......In hindsight, I shouldn't have said anything!! (Doh!)

I guess I was just mad at myself & needed to vent a bit, haha!

But Im still having fun. After all, that's what this is about!

Ah, disappointed but not surprised. I feel like I went down swinging with the Synchrotron coaster; maybe too much extraneous stuff, but no regrets! As a first timer the quality seen here was pretty surprising and I'm definitely excited to see this competition play out.

Oh, and go Team Bryce! For SCIENCE! :)

From Bryce McGibeny

Not all of my theme park is science. This week I'll be focusing on the "Ancient Civilizations" part of my park. History will be my focus for this week, and for a few other challenges. But yes, just like the intro to Bill Nye the Science Guy goes, "Science RULES!". Hahaha. :)

And it looks like it is time for a new chatter thread!
