REMAINING SCHEDULE:
7. Themed Land
8. Theme Park

This week is the semi-final of The Next Walt Disney competition! 3 challengers remain, and now the task is to design a replacement for Mickey's Toontown Fair at Magic Kingdom. Please include a minimum of 3 attractions (rides, shows, etc.), the theme, at least one restaurant, and at least one shop.

It looks like I'm not going to be the next Walt Disney, but the poll is still going on (it ends tomorrow). Please don't post until the poll has closed.

Ideas are due the 30th of March, approximately (it may change due to the poll's state of still running).

Andy, being that the expansion of Fantasyland is what is replacing Mickey's Toontown Fair, is this challenge to be taken as a "what if" type of scenario? By that I mean, in an alternate universe where Fanatsyland is NOT being expanded and Toontown Fair is just being replaced.
Thanks to you for any clarification.

^ I totally forgot about that....let's go with the latter. Make a whole separate land with a whole separate theme from Fantasyland.

Andy, hard as it is to wait, they do have until the 30th to post. I suspect they are working hard on getting it right, since only the top two get into the finals.

Good point, but usually someone has an idea in by now. For example, Joseph usually has his entry in early, and it usually a AAA performance

From Joseph Catlett
Posted March 28, 2011 at 7:21 AM
My entry will be in midday tomorrow (Tuesday). I'm running a little behind my normal pace for two reasons.
1) With the change from any park to now specifically a land that would work theme wise between Fantasyland and Tomorrowland.
and
2) The land concept I was going to post is being held off as my wife believes it is too strong a concept for just a land and could sustain a whole park (and I tend to agree with her). Here's hoping I make it to the finals because the theme park concept I have up my sleeve is going to curl your toes.

So...OZ is coming. Stay tuned.

OZ

Visitors to the Magic Kingdom starting in 2013 will find a change in the brick work beyond the back area of Fantasyland. Just past the Teacups, in the area formerly known as Mickey's Toontown Fair, visitors will see a yellow brick road leading them to high adventure in the land of OZ.

This version of OZ is based less upon the MGM film and more on the original books by L Frank Baum with some of the visual style popularized in the musical WICKED.

Upon entering this new land visitors will have three choices of Attractions.

1) THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD. A hedge maze style journey down the yellow brick road ending at the Emerald City. You enter past the crashed farm house which landed Dorothy Gale here. The Wicked Witch of the East's feet still sticking out from underneath. There you will pass through Munchkinland. Further down the path will lead you to the Scarecrow and a gaggle of crows. The road then leads you down into a woods grove where you see the Tin Woodsman. The path gets darker as the yellow brick road leads you into a forest and towards the Cowardly Lion. Down this path you will also see other characters from the OZ books like Tik-Tok, Jack Pumpkinhead, The Patchwork Girl, the Winkies, The china people and The Hoopers. The characters you see in the hedge maze are all simple animatronics, however as you exit the maze you are now at an optional character meet and greet with Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion.

2) THE GREAT AND POWERFUL OZ. A 10 minute long "audience" with the Wonderful Wizard of OZ.
Upon entry to the Art Deco styled Emerald City, you are issued a pair of green sunglasses(3D glasses) to protect you from the glare of this magnificent jeweled city. Upon entering the preshow the captain of the guards explains that there is one amongst you that is destined to be a champion for the people of OZ and her defender. The Wonderful Wizard of OZ is allowing an audience with him to pick the one who is worthy.

Entering the showroom visitors sit on the floor in front of a giant red curtain that opens and reveals a great mechanical head (the Wizard). behind the mechanical head of OZ on the screen are 3D fire and special effects. Using similar technology to Turtle Talk with Crush, the great OZ will pick a number of people out of the crowd and consider their 'worthiness'. The show will have comic overtones as one after the other the wizard deigns each potential champion a bust. Finally the wizard will pick a final person and emerge from his hiding place (live actor) behind the head and award the chosen one with a medal declaring them CHAMPION OF OZ.

3) THE FLYING MONKEY. Out on a jagged rocky hillside rests the castle of the Wicked Witch of the West. Head down the lonely path overrun with weeds and twisted, foreboding, gnarled trees. Do you have the courage, brains and heart to make it to the witch's lair?
Those willing to enter the castle cross the moat and tour rooms full of bubbling cauldrons, spare brooms and munchkins suspended by their ankles chained to the ceiling.
Moving into the loading area, riders will take a seat in a floorless suspended wild mouse style coaster. Six cars in length and seating 2 across, the front car will sport a figure of a flying monkey, wings spread ready to take flight.

Exiting the station to a recorded spiel "FLY MY PRETTIES! FLY! FLY!!" in the voice of the Wicked Witch, your coaster goes up a chain lift hill past projections of flying monkeys taking off into the night sky. You head up into a show building over a vast expanse of the haunted forest at night, other coasters zip by twisting around trees and jutting jagged rocks below you. At the top of the lift hill you face an audio animatronic witch astride her broom, flying and telling you "GET THAT GIRL AND HER LITTLE DOG TOO!" You take a spiraling turning fall down into the forest passing other coaster cars in a number of "near misses". You pass a shivering Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion. You then sweep back inside the castle, around a turret and into the witches throne room as the Witch hurls a fireball at you and demands you " GET BACK OUT THERE, DON'T COME BACK WITHOUT THAT GIRL AND MY SILVER SLIPPERS!"(in the books the slippers are silver NOT Ruby). Exiting back out of the castle and into the forest we pass the Winkie Guards keeping watch over the castle, followed closely behind by Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion dressed in disguise as guards. We take some tight turns with more near misses and head into the brake zone back in the castle to see Dorothy dousing the Witch with a bucket of water as she melts into the castle floor, green smoke rising into the air. We then turn into the unloading area and exit.

A restaurant

EMERALD CITY LOUNGE. In the heart of the Emerald City enjoy table service dining with the best chicken, seafood and steaks. Enjoy the sights of the beautiful Emerald City while you dine. Be sure to enjoy our signature drinks THE GALINDA (Pineapple, Orange and Cranberry Juice with a spritz of soda water) or THE ELPHABA (Kiwi, Pomegranate and Lime Juice with soda water) both non alcoholic of course.

Two Shops

GLINDA'S GOODIES. Oh so sweet candy and baked goods right out of the oven of the Good Witch of the South, Glinda.

and

EMERALD CITY TOURIST BUREAU. Take home a keepsake of your trip to OZ. Located at the exit of the Great and Powerful OZ show, the shop will look like the city's tourist bureau with posters advertising things to do and see while in OZ. T Shirts will be on sale with designs like "I Don't Think We're in Kansas Anymore", "Drop a house on ME and just SEE what happens". There will also be specialty themed OZ merchandise like Green Sunglasses, Broomsticks, Wands (like Glinda's), Scarecrow Hats, Stuffed Plush Cowardly Lions and Totos.

Spookyland
Coming out of the shadows and into the light is Disney’s newest themed land at Magic Kingdom. . A land that I have discussed many times here. A home to characters where the Headless Horsemen and Jack Skellington rule. A land spawned off of the creepiness of Haunted Mansion and bringing back a deceased favorite. Taking its theme from the marvelous world of suspense and terror, Spookyland will become a thrilling addition to the lineup of Magic Kingdom lands. In this version of Magic Kingdom, there would be a bit of rearranging that would occur. In order for this land to work, it would need to have the Haunted Mansion as its focal point. So instead of physically moving the entire Haunted Mansion structure, Liberty Square and part of Magic Kingdom would be rethemed, with part of the Fantasyland expansion moving into the Toontown area. Unfortunately, we would have to lost The Hall of Presidents, The Liberty Tree Tavern, and, the Columbia Harbor House; but not to worry, The Hall of Presidents and Liberty Tree Tavern would be recreated in Epcot’s new USA land. As you can see, there are a lot of changes just dependent upon the addition of this one land. However, it will surely be worth it to have a land based on ghosts, haunts, and thrills.

The second ride to be featured here will be none other than a recreation of Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. This wild ride has become even crazier as it has been revived to include new effects, audio animatronics, and amazing scenery. However, it will still be the crazy, fun loving ride that we all miss; just better. The façade of this ride will be taken from Disneyland as a recreation of Toad Hall.

The third ride to be included in this land will be a former submission of mine, Witch Mountain. Here is the description of the ride as posted in Challenge 4. This highly themed indoor/outdoor coaster will take you on an adventure through Salem, Massachusetts circa 1692. This coaster would generally be about a 3 minute ride. It would be a steel coaster. The coaster would be hidden in a rocky looking structure, similar to Big Thunder. But instead, it would be gray, dark, gloomy, and look very harmful. The story starts with you and the rest of your car are on a witch hunt. You begin by loading in a court room style setting about to embark on your journey to find a supposed witch that has escaped. You travel through lots of dark tunnels and forest like settings until you find the witch's lair, a cottage filled with wands, brooms, and cauldrons. You peer inside and an animatronic is sending her "specter" to haunt those who have done her wrong, including the passengers on the witch hunt. However, she notices you and begins to chase after your car. You spend the rest of your journey being chased by the witch, avoiding spells that are casted in an amazing light experience in pitch black darkness. Your train begins to become very shaky, starts to slow down, and makes irritating noises due to one of her spells. Suddenly you start to feel warm and notice that the witch has filled the area with fire. You start to make it back to the court room but the witch is hot on your trail Alas, you hear her screams as she is captured by another group and you get away. You then see the witch in the stocks, but she vanishes and you hear a cackle. Your train then arrives back at the court house and the ride is over. Unfortunately, the Witch is still out there...

The fourth ride would be a 3D virtual experience. Sleepy Hallow: Escape from the Headless Horseman would take you on a journey to escape the Headless Horseman’s wrath. It would be a ride in a similar fashion to Star Tours where you would load your “hay wagon” up with citizens from Sleep Hallow. Your journey starts off slow through the nice woods and cottages of the beautiful town. However, as the sun sets and you pass that bridge, the Headless Horseman appears. Your ride immediately starts to get faster, bumpy, and more intense. You hear the galloping of the horse behind you, and just as he reaches your side, about to cut you off and trap everyone, you escape the town and leave your “hay ride”.

Halloween Town Gifts- a gift store themed to all that is Nightmare Before Christmas related. Unfortunately, Jack did not get his own ride, but he runs his own gift shop.

Monster Mash Café- an eerie diner with a monster twist. This fast service restaurant will feature such foods as Franken Fingers, Spookghetti, and other monster themed foods.
So come to Spookyland, a land based off of your fright’s delight.

Thanks Mike, and no unfortunately I am not in the vote, as I was cursed by a fatal idea. I still love to share my ideas, something I did occasionally on TPA. But in that case, TPA is a little bit more time consuming (filled with some drama and problems) and I always found myself lacking time to post my ideas.

Uh oh, no response from Anthony...

The characters of Disney past have had enough of everyone talking about all of the princes and princesses. They’re taking over Mickey’s Toontown Fair and transforming it into…

THE LAND OF THE FORGOTTEN

There are four different attractions that visitors can choose from.

WALT’S FORGOTTEN FRIENDS
This ride is going to be a lot like The Great Movie Ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It will be housed in a smaller castle, since the forgotten characters always get the hand-me-downs. There are narrators on the carts with the riders to tell of all the details to the movies that most kids growing up now have never seen nor heard of. Starting with Oswald, the ride will detail movies like Pete’s Dragon, The Sword in the Stone, The Black Cauldron, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, and The Three Caballeros. Between a mix of Animatronics and animation, the riders take a trip back to before their parents were kids.

TIMELESS RIVER
This is the ride that I made for the water ride. I originally said that it would go in the Animation Courtyard at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. I think it fits in here much better. Mickey has always dreamed of being the captain for the Steamboat Willie. Unfortunately Peg-leg Pete is in charge. He is always throwing Mickey around, not being nice, and taking over the wheel any time he wants to.

The exterior of the queue is very colorful. As the riders get further into the queue, the colors fade and the entire ride is black and white. The queue winds its way through a re-creation of the Steamboat Willie's dock. The riders board a 12 person round raft. The whole ride is a dark, indoor, rapid ride. The ride starts out with screens to your right and left. The screen plays the famous scene of Mickey steering Steamboat Willie, as you are on a lift. After this video, all of the rest of the scenes are Animatronic. Right before you go over the edge, Steamboat Willie whistles and sends the raft down into the rapids. Mickey's whistling is loud as the rapids begin to pick up. A fight for the wheel between Pete and Mickey take place as you splash through the rapids and get soakin’ wet! The ride would take about 4 minutes.

MICKEYJUNK MOUNTAIN
A new addition to the family of “mountains” at The Magic Kingdom! Oswald The Lucky Rabbit would like to invite you to his lair, but first, you must climb Mickeyjunk Mountain! Inside the line there is artwork and animation sketches of all the classic Disney shorts and films, many of which have forgotten characters on them. At one point in the line, you reach “Ostown”, which is a replication of “Mickey’s Toontown Fair”. It has Oswald’s house (modeled after Mickey’s house) and Ortensia’s house (modeled after Minnie Mouse’s house). The train has 8 carts to them, each holding 2 people. They will be shaped like mountain climbers. As the train heads up the chain lift, random memorabilia of Mickey is littered about the floor. The cart goes through series of drops and turns and launches happen while many of the shorts are played on the screens around the ride. The most exciting part of the ride happens when the cart goes up the chain lift and exits through the mouth of a huge Mickey head that looks like it has been worn down and aged. This drop is about 70 ft.

Tron

This land will be completely indoors due to the glowing lights of the Tron World. The outside will look like a giant version of Flynn’s arcade. While inside, all cast members will be wearing reflective and black lit costumes to make them look like a program. There will be the Daft Punk music of Tron Legacy playing inside as well.

Lighcycles Dueling Coasters

Taking the most popular of the Arena games, the light cycle will be a dueling steel roller coaster where the guests will have to choose sides: CLU (Orange) or the User (Blue). Though the roller coaster both of these cars will race each other and try and cut each other off. One of the new technologies showcased on this roller coaster is the glowing of the track after a car has driven over it for five seconds (to make a light trail. This will look great from people watching the roller coaster as a sycronized ballet of light and sound fill the roller coaster area.

Get into the ARENA

In here, guests can play virtual games against other players such as light cyles, and flying disks. There will be a audience area for all friends and family to cheer on their favorite program, er, user. This will be free to do as long as you purchase an identity disk from the giftshop (mentioned below)

Flynn’s Arcade

Come waste an hour or two playing arcade games from the 80s. This will also be the largest collection of 80s arcade games (you know, the big clunky box looking ones) in the state of FL. 80s music will play thoughout this area.

Shops and Resturant

Arena Shop

The one stop shopping area of the Tron World. Here you can get glow in the dark shirts that look like the program’s lines and create and use your very own identity disk which is available in multiple colors (not just blue or orange)

Castor’s Mega BYTEs and Club

Come and dance with the top entertainment program in the system. Here you can find drinks with light up lightcubes in them (they would glow) and food such as hamburgers, hotdogs, and fries. It will be a counter service place with plenty of room for a dancefloor.

OSWALD’S LIBRARY
After you enjoy the magical experience of “Walt’s Forgotten Friends”, you can own all of the magic by shopping in Oswald’s Library. This gift shop will be the only place in the world that will have DVD’s of Disney’s forgotten films including all the ones from the ride. Not only will it have the old shorts, but it will also have the classics on DVD (Snow White, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, etc.). This store will also have replicas of original concepts by Ub Iwerks and Walt Disney when working on Oswald, Mickey and friends. On the other side of the shop is a chance to meet and greet with some old characters. Guests may take pictures with Oswald and Ortensia and Clarabelle Cow and Horace Horsecollar. Next to that is a closed space where old Disney silent shorts and sound shorts are playing non-stop. It is an open door all the time where guests can walk in and out whenever they want.

Riders must grab sunglass in order to go through the projector screens, into the movies. As the ride begins, you hear Mickey’s voice: “Hiya folks! So glad you could join me on this tour! Today I’m here to show you about how I was created and how I met all of my friends! Be careful though…”

From Eric S

-Enter the first projector screen: “Disney cartoons presents Plane Crazy!” The cart rises up and air blows underneath the cart to make passengers feel like they are flying. They fly over the Atlantic Ocean to an open field. We see Mickey reading a book “How to fly”. The screen melts and everything is black. We hear Mickey’s voice “Uh-oh. What happened?”
“It is I, the Phantom Blot welcoming you all!
“Oh no! Not you! Folk’s keep those glasses on. The Blot has a tendency to hyp….no..tize..”

From Eric S
Posted March 30, 2011 at 9:03 PM
The ride starts back up and is in full gear. We enter a new room filled with neon colors and slow talking. The cart begins to spin as if we were getting hypnotized…
“Now that the trap fodder is gone, we can begin my slow takeover of Fantasyland. Hold on to the handlebars.” The cart goes through different neon versions of the rides that currently exist in Fantasyland, but much quicker and gaining speed. These sections will be on 3-D screens instead of Animatronics like the actual rides. There are parts where the ride goes completely dark and the riders have no idea where they are headed.

All of a sudden the ride comes to a stop. “Wait a minute, what’s going on? Somebody turn the lights on.” The lights come on and the room is intensely white with Mickey Mouse directly ahead of the cart. The ride moves into a scene where Disney uses the Sorceror’s Hat to defeat the Phantom Blot and order is restored.

Andy, the last vote had 169 voters. Apparently there is still plenty of interest in this, especially in those competing. They've worked hard on this and that hard work should not be dismissed. I'm not sure why you've lost interest, but you're the founder of it and need to find a way to see it through to the end in a way that is fair and supportive to those who have been participating and following it.
