Dollywood announces drop tower, junior coaster for 2017

Dollywood today announced two additions for the 2017 season: a 200-foot drop tower and a junior coaster to accompany its long-time favorite Thunderbird.

Drop Line will tower 200 feet over Timber Canyon's pool, allowing impressive views of the Smoky Mountains' theme park before sending those riders plummeting 20 stories. The junior coaster, Whistle Punk Chaser, "throws exciting twists and turns at Dollywood’s younger loggers," according to the park's press release.

The Pigeon Forge, Tenn. park also is adding two new shows for 2017. America's Got Talent alumni enra, a Tokyo-based dance company, will present a show that includes interactive video and light displays. And "GREAT! Pumpkin LumiNights" joins the Harvest Festival lineup next fall.

"We've created a number of impressive displays that will light up the night and allow us to add some new experiences for families to enjoy the fun of fall in a uniquely Dollywood way," Vice-President and General Manager Gene Scherrer said in a statement.

This is an excellent addition to Dollywood and a great way to follow up Lightning Rod. As for what exactly the rides are, Drop Line will be a Funtime Skyfall, as seen in the post by Ride Entertainment, the North American broker for Funtime. As far as I can tell, this will be the first installation of the ride in the United States, though Funtime is well known for their Star Flyer and Sling Shot rides. As for Whistle Punk Chaser, the type has yet to be confirmed but most information points to it being a Zamperla Family Gravity Coaster.

Visited Dollywood for the first time in 6 years this past summer. Really enjoyed it and the drop tower will be a solid addition. Especially when considering the beautiful mountain scenery. The only memorable views we enjoyed of the Smoky Mountains were at the top of the Wild Eagle lift. I hope the drop tower views will be equally, if not more impressive.
