Disney confirms Iron Man ride for Hong Kong in 2016

October 7, 2013, 10:20 PM · Disney's finally building a Marvel-themed park attraction. And, as expected, it won't be in the United States.

As we've covered before, Disney's contractually prohibited from using any of its Marvel characters inside the parks at the Walt Disney World Resort, since Marvel sold those rights to Universal Orlando long before Disney bought the comic book publisher. With little room for expansion at California's Disneyland, attention's turned instead to the Hong Kong and Paris Disney resorts, which need fresh attractions to boost attendance at their under-developed parks.

Andy Sinclair-Harris, a Disney Imagineer assigned to Hong Kong Disneyland who frequently posts to Twitter, announced the news that it's Hong Kong that will be getting an Iron Man-themed ride.

The Iron Man Experience will open in Hong Kong in late 2016, according to Disney Parks chairman Tom Staggs, who as Andy's Twitter photo shows, was at the park in Hong Kong for today's announcement.

Update: Tom Staggs posted a bit more detail about Iron Man on the Disney Parks blog.

"Upon entering the ride vehicle our guests will be able to take flight with Iron Man on an epic adventure that not surprisingly pits Iron Man, and our guests, against the forces of evil. This adventure will take place in the streets and skies of Hong Kong, which will make an even more unique and special experience for our Hong Kong Disneyland guests. In addition, guests will be able to meet and take photos with Iron Man."

October 8, 2013 at 12:17 AM · I wish they were able to use the KUKA arm for this, the star tours vehicle doesn't seem like the right choice for this attraction but I guess we'll find out.
October 8, 2013 at 2:34 AM · Kuka Arm would be snazzy .
Despite the concept art, I'm betting they don't go the simulator route.
A centrifuge, mission space type thing would be the way I go about it.
I would also make it a shooter and replace the guns with an arm blaster thing.

Hong Kong Disneyland is such an underrated park. I'm glad it's getting this.

October 8, 2013 at 5:10 AM · It's not so much that I'm mad about them getting this. It's just another reason to go to this really beautiful theme park in Hong Kong. I'm just really pissed off at the fact that this will be open before any of WDW new projects such as Avatar and Star Wars expansion. Idk about Disney World anymore folks. Anytime I'm in central Florida these days I do Universal Orlando Typhoon Lagoon and maybe a day at Busch. That makes for one very amazing trip.
October 8, 2013 at 5:59 AM · Ummmmm Robert!!!! Is that a star speeder I see in the background? They do not have a Star Tours ride
October 8, 2013 at 8:30 AM · Totally looks like a Star Speeder. Lame! Look at the other concept art. It appears to be just a motion simulator redux of Star Tours.
October 8, 2013 at 9:12 AM · Well, I see the artwork confirms a Star Tours type ride. Fine by me, I'm probably not going to Hong Kong for a while.
October 8, 2013 at 9:32 AM · From the sounds and looks of it this ride appears to be nothing more than a retheming of star tours, new rife film, swap out Star Wars characters with Iron Man characters and u got a "new ride", my question is why does it take Disney SO long to build a new attraction? Universal would announce this and have it up a running a year later.
October 8, 2013 at 9:54 AM · It sounds underwhelming if it will be a Star Tours type ride. Star Tours II didn't do much for me. I outgrew the concept.

Hong Kong Disneyland is a nice park. The layout is very much like the Anaheim version with the same castle.

October 8, 2013 at 10:20 AM · Definitely a step in the right direction - getting Marvel going at the Disney parks is a big deal. Maybe this news is the beginning of a cavalcade of Disney attraction announcements.

Also, for a park without a Star Tours ride, using a tried and true (and very fun) concept for an Iron Man ride is a terrific idea. I have no problem with the decision. Plus the random elements of Star Tours II should allow for plenty of cool Marvel villains to be part of the show.

October 8, 2013 at 10:22 AM · I still don't know what the big deal about Iron Man is. I think the read and gold look kind of silly. It's a stretch, but the "Stark Industries Expo" does fit in with Tomorrowland though.
October 8, 2013 at 12:01 PM · Why Hong Kong and not Anaheim or Orlando?
October 8, 2013 at 12:41 PM · I agree that the time it takes Disney to get attractions up and running is pretty ridiculous. If the attraction is being announced now, along with concept art, that means it has been in development for at least a year or longer. It's going to take THREE YEARS before it opens, in a country that has very lax labor laws. Universal designed and built a ride in less than 2 years (Transformers), yet Disney is taking twice as long, and doesn't appear to be making a technological advancement with this attraction. Disney needs to get their act together, and speed up their development, or they're going to get left in the dust.
October 8, 2013 at 7:25 PM · If your going to do an Iron Man ride, it should be able to fly around with Iron Man inn some sort of "suit" (whether using Kuka arms or Vekoma's Pandora's Box). The simulator works for Star Tours because there were flying space crafts in Star Wars. There certainly weren't any in any of the Iron Man movies (save it for Guardians of the Galaxy).
October 9, 2013 at 1:47 PM · If I was going to design the Iron Man ride, I would make it a flying/laying down roller coaster. Have it be indoor and outdoor. The story would be Iron man needs you to test out his new suits or something like that. While laying down you could be flying parallel to a screen that shows Iron man flying beneath you. Just an idea, probably not economically feasible though.
October 10, 2013 at 9:39 AM · It does seem like this will be a Star Tours type ride, although it could be more like a Spiderman/Transformers.

I've always thought a version of the Mission: Space ride system would be the best way to do an Iron Man ride. The individual little screens, with the Infinity-Viz technology would be so perfect. Each person has their own screen, really making each person feel like they're in their own Iron Man suit. The storyline would work because we know Stark now has many, many suits in his collection. Also, the screen from Mission: Space seems like it would most accurately replicate what Tony Stark sees from his mask. And no ride has ever captured a more realistic replication of the sensation of space flight than Mission: Space. The only change I would make with the system would be to have the Guests laying down and facing forward, as opposed to sitting and looking up at the screen like on Mission: Space.
