Disney Fans Look Forward to D23 This Weekend

August 10, 2015, 10:40 AM · Disney's D23 Expo kicks off this Friday in Anaheim. In my Orange County Register column this week, I ask: Will Disney fans hear what they want at the D23 Expo?

Artoo from Naboo welcomed visitors to the Imagineering pavilion at the last D23 Expo

Many Disney fans have been hoping that this will be the occasion when Disney finally announced plans for Star Wars Land, or anything else that will be replacing the slew of now-closed and closing attractions at the Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park at Walt Disney World. In the column, I write about some of the possibilities and take a look at why some Disney fans are feeling especially stressed about this year's fan event.

Of course, the D23 Expo offers much, much more than a platform for attraction announcements, and provides an opportunity for fans of everything the company does to celebrate their favorite characters, shows, movies, songs, and franchises. We are planning to be at the event this weekend, to bring you coverage of some of the events and displays of greatest interest to theme park fans.

WDW is in a very bad shape. Epcot and DHS are for a very long time a shadow of their magnificent selves. Even the new additions like New Fantasyland are below the normally excellent quality Disney used to deliver.
Immagenering still is able to create beautiful environments like the artwork of Arendelle shows that they are going to build at Disney Sea and it's a far cry from the travesty that is happening in the Norway pavilion at Epcot.
So yes I think these D23 visitors will find a way to think it's all going to be marvelous for the US parks. I have lost hope and stopped going about 10 years ago because I didn't recognise my Walt Disney World anymore.
I hope Disney proves me wrong, I hope they not only revolutionise the themed environment but also finally step up their game and make stunning rides again with new systems that takes it far beyond anything they have ever build before and again take back their crown.

Every Disney source that I have spoken to has said upper management has not addressed the dollar situation at all. I would assume that they do not make enough profit on this and are killing them. What a shame. I have been collecting since 1987 and I find it unbelievable that nothing is being issued for the 60th at Disneyland. Just look back on what was issued for the 50th Aniversary. Is profit the only thing that Mr. Iger is interested in, so sad, not at all like the older generation of Management. I think Walt would be upset! Does anyone else feel the same way?

So, Frozen and Avatar will probably get the spotlight for Orlando, but they'll miss the big picture of the other Florida parks.
August 10, 2015 at 4:38 PM · I never get tired of hearing about all the new sidewalks, themed trashcans, and new plants being moved around because I don't care if WDW ever has a new E Ticket attraction.
Castmembers can slap me in the face as I enter the parks and kick me in the rear as I leave and I'll be back tomorrow riding the theme park museums rides of old.
August 10, 2015 at 7:01 PM · I'm so excited about D23. I really hope they make Star Wars land official.
August 10, 2015 at 8:54 PM · I'm wondering if Disney is at a point of no return if they don't announce DHS Star Wars Land this weekend.

The state of DHS and Epcot isn't just an insider fan joke anymore. When Disney guidebooks are no longer recommending Disney parks, things are getting serious.

It's still possible Disney does not want to announce anything Star Wars until the next movie launch. Can people still recommend DHS if the only announcement is a mini-Cars Land for the next several years?
